I think It's great. Why not advertise a bit the one and only major consumer PC manufacturer who was willing to put your product on their machines? I think it's a great way to get other manufacturers to jump on the Linux bandwagon as well....they like advertising....we all know that (Especially to demographics that would normally ignore them). If they can make sales to more people they probably will jump all over partnering with Ubuntu and other distros. - Bjwebb, on 10/11/2007, -10/+114Irony? I think its rather cool. Linux is not just for nerds any longer.
- winzippy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+105Dude, you're getting a Penguin.
- TheRealToma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+91Try ReactOS. No-one uses that :)
- pHr34kY, on 10/11/2007, -2/+86That's nowhere near as bad a Sony's product placement in the last James Bond flick...
I reckon they're returning a favour. Didn't Dell stick a random Ubuntu logo on their front page recently? - mbiesz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+85No *****, sherlock.
- Virak, on 10/11/2007, -20/+96The real "1337 h4x0rz":
1) Don't give a ***** about how popular their OS is, only how well it suits their purposes.
2) Don't call themselves "1337 h4x0rz" or any variation of it.
You fail on both counts. - Shananra, on 10/11/2007, -2/+73I care about Ubuntu. I'm a Linux user, and while Ubuntu may not be my distro of choice, they are leading the way to making Linux more main-stream and easier to use. Ubuntu brings in more Linux users. Think about it, bigger Linux market share= faster/better drivers in a more timely manner, among other things. That benefits me as a user of another distro.
I care about Ubuntu not because I use it, but because ultimately it's what is making many of the advancements in my distro of choice possible. Because of the indirect benefits I get from Ubuntu, I'm cheering them on all the way. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -17/+86isn't it obvious? Dell haxed Ubuntu's website and managed to photoshop a dude with a dell t-shirt on there...
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+67Real nerds write their own OSes. From scratch.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -22/+82It's official. Ubuntu has gone commercial.
- twtmc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+57I just got my 7.04 shipit cds today, and its not on there.
- loudej, on 10/11/2007, -5/+52high five
- diabolix, on 10/11/2007, -6/+50it was done in photoshop.. not the gimp.. hex edit it, and you can see the adobe meta-data
- jackyyll, on 10/11/2007, -4/+46Now THAT is Irony.
- freddo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+41Mod parent up, he's right, at offset 0x2B there's the string "Adobe"...
- hockeysk8, on 10/11/2007, -4/+39If you were really l33t you would be running Plan 9, not Linux.
- jonpotz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36All your well ironed Dell T-Shirts are belong to Ubuntu.
- Peepsalot, on 10/11/2007, -12/+45@andrewdutko
You guys don't get it. Computers are supposed to work for us, not the other way around. Learning the intricacies of Linux takes time and effort that most people are not willing to put in. The majority of computer users want a system that works without needing to learn all about the internals. They are content with what is more or less a "black box" for an OS, as long as that black box returns the correct output for any given input.
Ubuntu's motto is "Linux for Human Beings", not linux for gurus and sysadmins. Unless it is part of your profession, to "learn how to use Linux for real"(which by that i'm guessing you mean getting intimate with the command line, the various config files, compiling kernels and modules, etc) is mostly a wasted effort.
To use the old operating system to car analogy, I would venture to say that a very small percentage of car drivers double as mechanics. When buying a car they don't go looking for one that requires them to do their own engine swap before they can drive it off the lot. For those that do, kudos to them, I honestly respect that.
And by the way, I say this as a linux user who has used various distros: Suse, Fedora, Gentoo, Debian. My experience has been that none were as convenient to install and configure as Ubuntu. Add to that a great active community, and you have a winner in my book.
Also, if "there are better distros", why don't you say which ones? - schwebbie, on 10/11/2007, -14/+42Farmer: "I'm in ur Dell, Feistying ur Fawn."
- AnthonyA7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Anyone have a screenshot of the Ubuntu logo on Dell's home page? I missed it...
- Jacob, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29who said they couldn't go commercial, they maintain the same free philosophy as before they are putting the dell logo their because dell is putting them on dell computers as well as puting the ubuntu logo on the dell site.

"Founded in 2004, Canonical Ltd is a company headquartered in Europe with 90+ employees working in over 18 countries. Canonical is the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu project."
You're about three years too late, methinks. - Heembo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30If you were really elite, you would be still running Commodore 64 OS, the most secure OS in the world!
- Pingspike, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26Heh, nice. Totally edited but a nice gesture of support for Dell. And hint...
- TheTankengine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24The best part of this: the link is actually to the ubuntu website. Not some ***** blogspam exclaiming how amazing this photo is in 2 or 3 crappy sentences.
- mercurysquad, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24I don't know what their strategy is, but I think it's unfair to smaller yet devoted manufacturers like System76 who have shipped ubuntu for far longer. They should get some 'official' publicity as well.
- Heembo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Nope, look at the image meta data - photoshop, baby
- ohthehumanity, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23My wife disagrees
- ahthrift, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21My past 3 girlfriends disagree
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Wow... nice sentence. :D
- fluxion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17@damonlab
i'll have you know that i now have full root access to 127.0.0.1, and in about 5 minutes i will be formatting it - idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -8/+23Come on guys, quit lying. Diggers don't get girlfriends or wives.
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Reading your comment is like when those scientific studies come out from time to time that you read and go" wow did someone actually research that, I could have told you that when I was 2."
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Because they are the only major manufacturer doing it.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14The ironing, it flattens me
- diabolix, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17OMFG! I just opened this image in ghex2, IT IS PHOTOSHOP!! not GIMP! Open it in a hex editor, and check out the comment section at the top, you'll see Adobe.d (left by photoshot). How dissapointing
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14"Adobe" is underneath 'JFIF Ducky" when opened in a hex editor.
It's in there, but perhaps the creator was just using Adobe ICC profiles? Many Linux photo apps support these profiles. This could have been created in Linux using those Adobe profiles which are freely available for download.

Prove your "1337 hax0r" skills by hacking my computer. I will make it easy on you by giving you the address. 127.0.0.1
Do your worst. - clark1001, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I run Ubuntu on a Dell. I don't necessarily consider myself a "leet haxor". I have a great passion for a subject and have a yearning to attain more knowledge on that subject, though.
- Seiesnalli, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Subliminal messaging.
- Klowner, on 10/11/2007, -6/+142B through 2F in a hex editor says "Adobe" *pulls hair out*
- iDiggIt42, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9@Sterango (#6843523)
Would you like a wamburger and some french cries with that rant? - Veurruckte, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Amen!
It's the same topics day after day: Anti-Bush, Ubuntu, Wii sales, Sony failure, Anti-RIAA, Anti-MPAA, Anti-Christian, The Top 10 *, Google, etc. Digg is becoming less and less a NEWS site and more and more a fan-boy wart, as you said.
You can't even submit a completely valid comment without it being dugg down if you have a different opinion regarding something. -
