Yes, you can find out everything by searching the forums and the internet, but sometimes finding a solution can be difficult (i.e. doing much with 'rename' without knowing Perl). Even when you do find information, there is no guarantee it will apply to your version.
MS is way ahead of open source in general in this area. Clearly there are a lot more people will to do bits of programming for free than people willing to document for free.
