Well, not very much at the moment, but that will all change next month."
Then why not write the article then?? This article is useless. - astyguy, on 10/26/2009, -2/+15will ubuntu 10.04 look like this ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_B7VpIwdiY - ozroy, on 10/26/2009, -0/+13No. That is Gnome 3, and the article says that it probably won't be stable enough to be used as default for a LTS release.
It will probably be available as an optional install though. - DBeta, on 10/26/2009, -1/+129.10 took a good step in that direction, but I have a feeling 10.04 will only be polish on top of 9.10 graphically(and in many other ways). 10.10 is expected to have Gnome 3.0, which is a good change graphically but it isn't ready for a long term release like 10.04.
10.04 will mostly be a spit polish of 9.10, but 9.10 is a great release, so I'm not disappointed. - sango, on 10/26/2009, -1/+12please make a slick theme, otherwise love it
- chadsmith729, on 10/26/2009, -3/+13What can we expect? 1 word. Awesomeness.

There are more than most people realize, and some are pretty ***** good. - GavinZac, on 10/26/2009, -0/+7You can do this without compiling. You can either download the .debs (the debian/ubuntu equivilant of an .msi/.exe installer) from www.getdeb.net or (better) you can add third party software repositories to your list of sources; the easiest way to do this is with Ubuntu Tweak which you can get from getdeb.net too. Ubuntu Tweak offers you a list of sources and what they'll give you, and lets you add them with a tick so that they'll update as if Ubuntu/Canonical were offering them to you.
- akpanga, on 10/26/2009, -0/+7You could do with this http://www.ghabuntu.com/2009/10/linux-gamers-play- ...
- jasonkostempski, on 10/26/2009, -0/+6"Ubuntu will make a new release every six months. In addition, we may make an Enterprise Release every 12 to 24 months, which will receive additional testing." http://bit.ly/1sGezH
- iFrix, on 10/26/2009, -2/+6My thoughts exactly.
BTW here's a new article:
"What will the PS5 look like?"
"No idea yet, but Sony will tell us in a few years so stay put" - jasonkostempski, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4Aaronic Aardwolf
- Baryn, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4However, 1-2 years of hardcore Linux experience are so important for those working in an IT-esque environment. I'm a web designer, and using Linux over the years has been a smart decision. It's always funny to see an OS X-only user shake when you mention the Terminal. :P
- Hiwnes, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3I'm not at all convinced about Gnome 3 yet. It seems like a lot of obfuscation and clicking just to do the simple things I can do today with a drop down menu. I'm hoping for the best but what I've seen so far hasn't impressed me.
- nxusername, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3^ this
- explodingzebras, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3"Under the hood Ubuntu 10.04 will also be switching to using a swap file, instead of a separate partition. This will allow on-the-fly resizing."
I hope this isn't true, swap file instead of seperate partitions is a bad idea, it's one of the reasons i prefer Linux. - FormerBabby, on 10/26/2009, -3/+6Still something about it thats ugly. Its not WinXP ugly but it still feels old.
- matt.rubin, on 10/26/2009, -1/+4the feature we all want
sudo make me a sandwitch - akpanga, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3African Antelope will be the name after Zany Zebra
- explodingzebras, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3dugg for xkcd
- ileftfark, on 10/26/2009, -1/+3Why do you want the most up to date apps on an old version? They'll be dropping support for Intrepid in 6 months from now anyway.
- removesstains, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2Uninstall the official Flash from the synaptic package manager and search for one called gecko something. It uses mplayer plugin to play flash in firefox and it works awesome for me in Linux Mint 7 64-bit. I'm at work so i can't look up exactly what its called, but either look through the apps that pull up when you search the word Flash or search Gecko.
Good luck. - angrytortilla, on 10/26/2009, -1/+3Having been using 9.10 RC 64-bit for a few days I can attest to the ease of installation and how friendly the OS is when applications require plugins to perform properly. This is great for average users.
The point of the article was to illustrate that 9.10 is a healthy comparison for 10.04, where the latter will feature even greater improvement on current features, and dispel the notions that an immature Gnome 3 will make its way in. - lonniebiz, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2My priority is on reducing the number of steps (clicks and keystrokes) needed to initiate what I want to do. To the degree that GNOME 3 doesn't have this priority, I don't like it.
- DBeta, on 10/26/2009, -1/+3Install flashblock and see if it fixes the problem. If so, your issue is flash, and that should be the direction to look. In my experience 64bit Firefox is every bit as stable as 32bit. As a work around, you might try Chrome. It's quite nice on Ubuntu.
Also, try running Firefox from the terminal to see what is actually causing the crash. - akpanga, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2It should just be like this; "Hey dude, this app has been upgraded to this release, want it? Click here to have it." Rather than me having to go to software sources, choose proposed and a whole lot of processes that I could easily do without
- 4321234, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2"Adjective animal". I like that as a better response to "What comes after "Zany Zebra?".
- rpgmakr, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2For one, the name doesn't suck.
- mark076h, on 10/27/2009, -0/+23 people did apparently.

If you want to have the most up to date version during the lifetime of a release try Fedora. Instead of just doing security updates they do both. They give you new versions of software and security support. Also you can try a rolling release such as arch where a simple "sudo pacman -Syu" into the terminal will bring every piece of software you have installed to the newest version that is available. But to warn you, arch is for people who know their way around linux. It doesn't have fancy GUI's that hold your hand like Fedora and Ubuntu do. - Frostek, on 10/26/2009, -3/+5Three days to go!
- akpanga, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Lol
- DBeta, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Because it isn't all about looks. Granted, I haven't yet tried 4.3, but 4.2 and earlier was just too frustrating to use. Many small issues added up to big annoyances. Also it wasn't exactly stable, but I figure 4.3 fixed that.
- TimtheTaxMan, on 10/26/2009, -2/+3That is one thing that annoys me about Ubuntu. They are firm about not doing software upgrades (other than security) on an existing Ubuntu release. This means that a LTS edition user could be stuck with 2 ½ year old software until they update again. This normally doesn’t affect me, however, because I tend to update my Ubuntu release every 6 months.
- Eezyville, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Thanks I'll look into to this.
- mark076h, on 10/26/2009, -4/+5I just installed 9.10 64bit on my laptop and firefox keeps crashing when i go to certain websites, i installed flash 64bit. Does anyone know a fix for this?
- Eezyville, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Because Intrepid is the most stable for me now. Jaunty kept crashing on my because of xorg being unstable for me. Hardy didn't have some features that I wanted. I didn't want to reinstall Ubuntu every 6 months because of potential crash. Why wouldn't I want the latest software?
- legend1222, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Thats easy. KDE=Home User (ala Vista/Win7) Gnome=Professional/Business (ala Windows in classic mode). Want to be seen as a professional, you don't use KDE. I'm talking the real business world, not the realms that geeks and digg users run in.
Keep in mind i'm only comparing default themes, which most people seem to think is like the only thing available. - prossi10, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2Is there just a new version of Ubuntu released every couple of months? I don't understand. I feel like every time I come back here there's some new "adjective-animal" coming out on the front page that people are literally freaking out about.
- lonniebiz, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1Furthermore, I don't like clicking on small areas ( like "less" and "more" in the video the 2nd guy posted). Make it blunt, I say, while making it look good too. The smaller the thing to click on, the more effort/strain it causes for heavy users with deteriorating eyesight and repetitive motion sensitivities.
- waspbr, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1try swiftfox, it is an optimized version of firefox.
- lonniebiz, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1Hard to say, under modern methods of use, which is faster, but as the previous guy said, I don't like swap to be used anyway. I have 4 gigs of RAM in my laptop, so anytime I see swap being used a all, it make me wonder why.
I suspect you will still have the option of using a swap partition over a swap file. With a swap partition you can use a completely different drive for swap, but I bet you can also do this by mounting swap folder, point it to any partition you like on any drive.
After considering this, I don't see much advantage to allocating a whole partition to swap; it statically wastes capacity by seldom using it due to modern RAM increases. - ChadN, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1Swap partitions suck in RAID setups, and swap files are (supposedly) just about as fast. Me, I try *hard* to almost never hit swap. What's the disadvantage?
- tnoy, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2Who dugg you down? Flash in Firefox on 64bit is wildly unstable in 9.10.
- noisymime, on 10/26/2009, -2/+3Have you tried Kubuntu?
- Eezyville, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1I've been tempted to use fedora because a lot of the scientific software i need are in .rpm format and alien doesn't always work. and I have seen Arch, my roommate uses it, and yeah it was definitely tougher.
- ZaZ2137, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1Or Arch, if you want to roll your own and learn something about linux. <-not for beginners
- web2pointYo, on 10/26/2009, -3/+4I just want to know what its going to be called after Zany Zebra?
