- badenglishihave, on 06/10/2009, -2/+142Get it to boot in exactly 10.04 seconds; then I'll be really impressed.
- stealthrocket, on 06/10/2009, -11/+99I don't get the fascination with boot times. Are you rebooting your system so often that this is an issue?
- Kisama, on 06/10/2009, -7/+86Das Boot!
- warp99, on 06/10/2009, -2/+70WTF? Two years ago everyone was screaming bloody murder about how the boot times with Ubuntu were so much slower than Windows. They do something about it and now we have people crying "Meh? What's so great about faster boot times?"
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -2/+69Just set your splash screen to porn, and you are all set.
- Balanced, on 06/10/2009, -0/+62I know a lot of laptop users that don't use or trust hibernation. I don't use it for my work laptop overnight, so I do notice the incredibly long time it takes Windows to start up and log me in in the morning. (In my case, msot of it is a long login time.)
- maddonkey, on 06/10/2009, -12/+65I hope my cumputer boots up in 10 seconds...
more time to fap - sickbag69, on 06/10/2009, -7/+552010. The Year of Linux!!!
- u16085, on 06/10/2009, -8/+51Can we focus on the GUI? .. And dont give me that its perfect crap. Time for a refresh.
- chicagojack, on 06/10/2009, -8/+50lets see them run a 100 meters in 10 seconds
- solarwind24, on 06/10/2009, -2/+44Turn on at least once a day, turn off at least once a day. At least. We like to save power.
- dtfinch, on 06/10/2009, -2/+39I'd like to see Firefox cold start in under 10 seconds one of these days.
- badenglishihave, on 06/10/2009, -1/+36Seriously... I have never trusted Windows "sleep" or "hibernation" modes.
- talonh, on 06/11/2009, -0/+35That would certainly give a new meaning to the term splash screen.
- Skr1blesX, on 08/25/2009, -24/+54Oh whats that Mac??? That's right BITCHES we got ya!!!
- Chaotyk, on 06/10/2009, -0/+29Do.... do you understand computers? Or operating systems?
- ByronFortescue, on 06/10/2009, -11/+40The thing is, I never reboot my Mac, only after Software Updates..
Boot times are not that interesting at all, but still it's good effort for Ubuntu to pursue. Especially when it comes to netbooks and the like.. I am also interested what 'boot time' they are talking about.. Is it raw boot time till the login window appears, or boot time for the whole machine to start, log in automatically and have the desktop loaded and ready? - Paranoidmarvin, on 06/10/2009, -0/+28because it's the same people working on the look of the UI and the programming of the kernel and other stuff?
And in all honesty, you don't want kernel hackers designing a UI - pathouston22, on 06/10/2009, -3/+28Already done. SSD.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -0/+23Would you rather have 10 second virus scan times then?
Go away. - Astrad, on 06/10/2009, -0/+22They aren't necessarily the same people.
- tj111, on 06/10/2009, -14/+35Ugh, so I'll still have to wait 10 seconds for my computer to boot? Unacceptable.
/s - priegog, on 06/10/2009, -4/+24Well, that depends on the usage different people give to their machines. If you never shutdown, that's cool, but not only is that an option in linux too (were you trying to imply that linux users wouldn't be able to do that for some reason? I won't start bragging about my box's uptime right now), it's a dumb excuse for not having a good boot time.
And about the time from button-pressing to actual usage; mac's have always had an unfair advantage just because apple has control over the BIOS. Not that has stopped linux from beating the crap out of macs in that regard too. Both with motherboard manufacturers like asus becoming more friendly towards linux, this should only improve with time.
Can't you just say "good for linux" sans the "oh me and my mac bla bla bla" and be done with it? - cubicledrone, on 06/10/2009, -1/+21Linux developers have to be able outrun most of the NFL?
- MWeather, on 06/10/2009, -0/+20Yeah, she can select a different theme from the dropdown box, or a different color for a certain element. She's old, not retarded.
- GeorgeWKush, on 06/10/2009, -2/+21You'll be done fapping before that 10 seconds.
- podgey22, on 06/10/2009, -0/+18Throwing massively expensive hardware only gets you so far.
Optimising the hell out of it and *then* buying massively expensive hardware will equal the uberwin here, me thinks. - Chaotyk, on 06/10/2009, -0/+1710 seconds, and then you start using your computer. That's the concept.
- Chaotyk, on 06/10/2009, -0/+17..."the best free image editing software" being what, MS Paint?
- Naidim, on 06/10/2009, -1/+18Let me know when they surpass the 2.5sec boot time of my old Amiga 1200

easy as cake! - tikibaloni, on 06/10/2009, -4/+21Can we focus on hardware support and nvidia randr integration???
- strangeman, on 06/10/2009, -0/+16Read the article. The developer says they want to use 2 secs to load the kernel, 2 secs to load drivers and mount devices, another to secs to start X and 4 secs to load the desktop-environment (which is only loaded after login). So the boot time they talk about would be from GRUB to fully usable.
- CookieOfFortune, on 06/10/2009, -1/+17with ksplice, Linux kernel patches do not require a reboot.
- swab, on 06/10/2009, -0/+16http://upstart.ubuntu.com/
- snake1025, on 06/10/2009, -2/+17I've been using windows "hibernation" mode on my laptop for a long time and never had an issue with it.
- aserer511, on 06/10/2009, -2/+17not so fast [no pun intended]
- skuk, on 06/10/2009, -0/+14Just got to the airport, checked in, and got 10 Min's to boot find wireless network and download mail before heading to the gate? Yes it is. And if booting and checking mail/news over breakfast is going to be as easy as checking an sms then its going to be essential.
- strangeman, on 06/10/2009, -1/+15Fun fact: the German pronounciation of "Das Boot" is "das boat" ;-)
- RoloTomasie, on 06/10/2009, -1/+14Hibernate and sleep are good ways to bog-down your RAM.
- priegog, on 06/10/2009, -1/+13You have to be kidding, canonical is a HUGE developing force in the Linux world, and all the changes they do go upstream. Probably not as big as redhad or suse in that regard just yet, but getting PRETTY close.
- podgey22, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12Yes.
- kentifer, on 06/10/2009, -1/+13A dell mini 9...
That's pretty ambitious.
Go Ubuntu Community! - PsychoBrat, on 06/11/2009, -0/+12Quite frankly, I don't believe you.
- marx2k, on 06/11/2009, -0/+12So you failed at VMWare and now wish everyone to know this?
- MWeather, on 06/10/2009, -0/+11I'd love to see this free app that has more features than GIMP. What is it called?
- RPGmaster, on 06/10/2009, -0/+11GNOME 3.0
Its set for 10.04 too (...I think) - bstock, on 06/10/2009, -0/+1130+ seconds on your bios? Unless it's a workstation-class motherboard, I've never seen a bios take that long to boot with normal settings, even with raid cards and such.
- stevenbrown, on 06/11/2009, -3/+14abhiroop you are an idiot
- warMen, on 06/10/2009, -0/+11suspend and hibernation work fine on linux
