- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -12/+139linux? I heard that stuff runs on top of windows doesn't it?
- TKn00b, on 10/12/2007, -3/+105I want the Linus Torvalds Signature Edition
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+104"Ultimate Edition". So where can we get "Basic Edition"? Is it $200 cheaper?
- Jaq524, on 10/12/2007, -1/+57Meh, I got the basic-- didn't have the budget for ultimate. :(
I'd say, though, if you have to $0 to spend you might as well go for it. - Burritoking924, on 10/12/2007, -11/+64I have decided to skip Vista and go straight to UUE.
- Enixyle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49what makes you think you're the father?

Bah. Torrents are the gods' preferred method of file transfer, so just relax. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+35Does it "violate any licences"?
Only if you live in the USA. The Yanks were stupid enough to allow their RIAA and MPAA to force the DMCA through. This has crippled multimedia software development over there, and prevents legal use of any non-MS codecs.
The Americans also believe that their inane DMCA applies outside the USA - it doesn't. So everyone in the rest of the world can use proper operating systems and reliable software. The Americans are virtually forced to use Windows (anything else is anti-American!). Windows "Vista" is roughly 6 years behind current Linux development, and will fall further behind as Microsoft try to "fix" all it's faults over the next few years.
Game Over, Microsoft! - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29Congratulations! You are now going to get some pats on the back from a bunch of diggers, maybe a BJ or two.
- sifelltneytandi, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30Behn1220: Shut the ***** up, you idiot. You're not funny or clever. And despite what you may think, arguing about which file transfer methods are better isn't the least bit cool.
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I'm all for included programs, but this is overkill. Does anyone really need 5 different DVD rippers, 3 different HTML editors and 8 different media players all coming with their OS? Including all of that just makes it bloated. Then again, the inclusion of native Wireless Internet, Bluetooth and codec support make it mighty tempting over the regular Edgy.

- coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Ha yes, its all "legit"....its just ubuntu preloaded with a bunch of the most commonly used apps. Most importantly, integrated multimedia support from the get go.
- pennyfan87, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Someone post a torrent.
- calebhawk, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25@behn1220:
dude why are you being such an asshat? go get laid... maybe you won't be so ornery - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Your torrents will only kill your bandwith if you don't properly configure your BT client. Any decent client (Azureus, uTorrent) gives you the option of capping your upload speed. Set it to 80% or so of your max upload speed. And by max upload speed I mean your real upload speed (speakeasy.com/speedtest), not what your ISP claims you "might" be able to achieve. Or, install some decent open source firmware into your router and cap your speed there globally.
- dgh1973, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"I want the Linus Torvalds Signature Edition"
Is that the one incorporating the new GNOME patches for more advanced features and streamlined code? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Typing this up with 1.2 at the moment... very stable :)
- schroeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Linux distros are always the fastest torrents in my opinion. This is probably because people who download linux know more about configuration than the average PC user and leech less/upload faster (and longer) since they are supporting free open source software. I have downloaded a ~3GB distro in 2-3 hours (usually 700-1000kbps) which by no means slow for a cable connection.
- beetjebrak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Community support is free and it's true that nobody is obligated to fix your problem. However darkliquid's reaction here makes all of the Linux community look bad. Maybe I can help you, but I'd have to know a little more about your system. Can you boot from your external drive? If you can't boot from your external drive, an OS installation from it will be quite difficult and the suggestion to install from CD may very well be the easiest way to get your OS installed. If you can actually boot from your external drive (check your BIOS setup for that), installation shouldn't be too difficult. In case the install DVD does boot but something goes wrong, you'll probably have a bunch of error messages to show for it. Those may help solve any issues. Mind you, any OS that is distributed on DVD will give you similar problems if you can't boot from your external drive. That's not an issue that's exclusive to Ubuntu or Linux in general. To put this into perspective: I once had to install an OS by using a boot floppy and pulling the rest of the files in through a parallel printer port using FTP on a cross cable. Eventually you'll get stuff like this to work, just hang in there.
- captjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You mean KDE?
/I kid the Gnome users ;-) - loconet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I was about to post the same thing. Time spent on this thing could be more useful in other things that Ubuntu/Linux needs. We don't need a distro with 3 irc clients preloaded. All this bloat will be counter productive.
- behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Quit paying the toll for that troll...
- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12> Windows "Vista" is roughly 6 years behind current Linux development
I'd actually be genuinely interested if you have any metrics to back that up? - arrenlex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Being afraid of text files doesn't really mix well with the Linux environment. I have just the thing for you, though! You ever eaten apples? Well, now you can use the intertubes on one!

These are download mirrors, taken from the site. It looks like it'll go down, but that's no reason for you to not download the ISO while you wait for the site to come back. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Im running both Vista Ultimate and Ubuntu Ultimate on my Laptop.
I use my Vista side for gaming and some programs I use that don't run in Ubuntu very well under wine. I also got my Vista for free so Its not a loss to me.
I would say if you are trying to decide between Linux and Windows give this a shot, its very clean and simple. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Down :|
I love UUE I have 1.2 on my laptop right now, its really good for linux noobs like me... makes everything so simple. - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Does anyone know how UUE stacks up against PCLinuxOS? The latter comes loaded with all sorts of good stuff.
- cmv0, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Where's the UUe Home Basic for System Builders Upgrade Signed Limited Numbered Edition?
- coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well technically yes, it breaks some licensing issues, any free linux distro that integrates multimedia support, such as the ability to play mp3 audio, is breaking some license. But in regards to stability, I can only speak on behalf of UUE2 which thus far has been spectacularly stable.
- korosive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Can I now use 1280x1024 res without modifications? That's whats been shying me away from Ubuntu for awhile.
- DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6At the time the new version was made available, it was .torrent or nothing, so behn1220, you'd have preferred a link to the alternative? Here ya go:
- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Sorry for the comment abuse, but nobody scrolls down...

- godd4242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Now all we need is a less flamewar inciting description!
We'll be set fellow Ubuntu lovers!
:3 - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I always get Linux distros of torrents. I don't think I've ever downloaded a Linux distro that didn't max out my downward bandwidth for the entire duration of the download. On Ubuntu distros I get a constant 720+kbps, which is usually higher than anything I'll ever see downloading of the net (which usually averages about 400kbps).
- GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5annndd its down, 14 minutes after being promoted to front page.
- djuniah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6leave it to a drexel student to say that.......
(shhh its ok, i am too) - monaleilani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thank you for the positive comment. I know noone's obligated to help me. I have never used Linux before and had heard that Ubuntu's communities were especially nice, so it was frustrating to me when someone did respond but said something that to me was pretty useless. UUE sounds like the absolute best distro to me because I don't have experience installing anything in Linux nor am I familiar with the Linux applications out there.. I'll get a big variety of apps at once and weed them down as I find my favorites and gain experience. I'm going to try to make the biggest effort I can to not have to install Unbuntu (from the cd). I'm still in mid-download of UUE right now, and I can't test whether my external drive will boot yet.. But when it's done I'll restart and see whether my laptop's bios will let me boot from the external drive.
- beetjebrak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's the kind of choice free software gives you. Different things for different people. Personally, I love that choice even if I probably won't be downloading UUE either.
- beetjebrak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does your comment mean you can't get wireless to work? If your chip is actually recognized and supported by Linux, there are many good guides on the ubuntu forums on getting WPA security to work. Search for 'wpa supplicant' and you'll find them. WPA security still is a bit of a hack to implement and you'll have to get your hands dirty on text configuration files, but the guides make it pretty easy to do. Ubuntu 7.04 seems to promise a better GUI for wireless networks.
- gnawph2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Awesome. I'm psyched that I get to spend 2-4 hours removing software I don't need just like Windows!
I'm new to Ubuntu and all, but why the hell do you need 4 desktop enviorments? Why isn't there just one that "works best"? - Tsen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't know as far as preloaded goodies goes, but PCLinuxOS is KDE, not gnome, and is supposed to run quite a bit slimmer on resources than most Ubuntu distributions.

Heh, yeah... We are pretty ***** retarded. I can prove it on my finals tomorrow. - magic6435, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Still no myth Tv BLAH!
- twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Ubuntu Ultimate Edition is just ***** amazing. I set my home folder as a seperate partition and just reinstalled ubuntu as UUE 1.3. I must say, if this were sold in stores for $50, I would buy it just for the overall quality of the work. It is ready for mainstream now, no doubt, especially once they build it over 7.04.
