- jamonterrell, on 10/11/2007, -2/+108I'm not trying to be an ass here, and I certainly don't speak for Canonical or the Ubuntu Council that decides these things....I just wanted to make you aware (if you weren't already) that use of the Ubuntu name in derivative works is covered by trademarks (presumably to prevent confusion as to what exactly is being made available, and whether or not it's an official Ubuntu release). I noticed you called your release "Ubuntu Ultimate CD Edition" and they specifically mention not using the word "Edition" and prefer the term "Remix." They have some pretty nifty guides over here if you're interested:
http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/trademarkpolicy
I think a good alternative would be: Ubuntu, Ultimate CD Remix or Ubuntu, Ultimate DVD Remix - pete83, on 10/11/2007, -1/+56You're not being an ass. I think the Ubuntu trademark policy is actually quite generous, and I don't see why derivative projects like this one blatantly disregard it.
- DeQuinceysDiet, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26Remind me why I should care that you don't care?
- Codes02, on 10/11/2007, -9/+28"build your os" ? Umm... anyone ever heard of gentoo?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19ultimabuntu?
- tehcris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Your making a great point people should be aware of.
- ElCazador, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I totally agree with jamonterrell. The Ubuntu/Canonical folks seem to have very reasonable rules regarding the use of the "Ubuntu" name, and TheeMahn's usage of it is a clear example of it's MISUSE.
I'm all for burying this, because TheeMahn really needs to change the name of his distro immediately! - BHSPitMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Go with the official version; this is something thrown together by some guy. Some guy who might be looking at some trademark issues.
- ElCazador, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Um, considering that much of Ubuntu's demographic is "New Linux Users", I would think that their answer would be "No, what's Gentoo?"
- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"Windoze" and "rools"? That was a joke post, right?
- jhuebel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Or Automated Linux From Scratch or SourceMage or [name another source-based distro here]...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11oh..so that's where U2 got their name from...I didn't know that.
- blup3ace, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8no horny hippo?
- raid517, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8OK I know I will probably be slain/dugg down for saying this (this is digg after all - and trying to be helpful/informative is generally frowned upon here) - but if you want an Ubuntu distro with all of the missing stuff included (codecs, Mplayer proprietary drivers and so on) Linux Mint is probably an excellent choice. It has (as I said) all of the missing stuff included which generally Canonical leave out due to legal reasons - is binary compatible with Feisty Fawn and even includes Beryl (and Compiz) working straight out of the box. Moreover it is a genuine full blown distribution (and not just a random CD/DVD cobbled together by some lone guy) and is generally much less cluttered than Ubuntu Ultimate too.
Anyway as I said, I will probably be killed for suggesting it - but nonetheless it is a worthwhile alternative if you think Ubuntu Ultimate might be a bit too top heavy. - scabbers, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10You fail at being an OS provider.
- Ninjabortion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6i think that means this is kind of like a choose your own adventure. choose the right path and the antagonist dies and you get rich, incorrectly and you end up with spyware i think
- t1da1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6digg effect already?
- bcmiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I recommend that you install the vanilla ubuntu/kubuntu 7.04 and add any programs that you want after you know what they are and why the default program provided with ubuntu isn't good enough.
Otherwise you get 10 aps for each function that all do the same thing. For instance he has the following programs for the ipod.
IPod support (whatever that means)
IPodder - Ipod sync software
GTKPod - Ipod Sync software
IPodder - Ipod sync software
Gpixpod - Photo sync software for Ipod
IPodslave - an iPod IO slave
Yamipod - Ipod software
Not to mention Amarok which also lets you add songs to your ipod easily by default. This is complete overkill and even worse if you don't have an ipod.
I don't think that the idea of adding everything just incase you may use it is a smart way to plan your OS. You can use his list as a guide to some programs you may want to consider
http://ubuntusoftware.info/Ubuntu_Ultimate_1.4/ - diablo75, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I had 1.3, and grew to not like it. To much weird stuff like LAN networking suddenly not working, updates that would fail to install, slow performance over all and more memory usage by programs I don't use or need. I'll still check it out though, but I'm not holding my breath.
- jbroome, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6It sort of defeats the purpose of bittorrent if the tracker can't stay up under load.
- jhuebel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Well, it *is* called Compiz Fusion now. Not that it really matters. The important thing is that the development is combined and the two teams are now working together on a common goal.
- jamonterrell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If so, then that's wonderful, and you're right that he doesn't need to change anything. I just wanted to make sure he was aware of their trademark rules, because based on the name's direct contradiction with the rules, it seemed very likely that he was not aware of them.
However, since you are claiming authoritatively that it is "sanctioned" (presumably by Canonical, not M0nke), would you mind dropping us a link to where you got this information?
Thanks - jdhore1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Hey, the Wiki may suck, but it has more information than Debian's wiki, Fedora's wiki, Suse's wiki, etc...
- ChileanGoD, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6U2 ?
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm just guessing here - is that "die in a fire?" Regardless, I put up an insult mirror - oh look! There's you! You're running around, not saying a word, and what is that? Are you on fire? Hmm. Karma, my friend. It'll getcha.
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I COMPLETELY agree. It's "Linux For Human Beings." It's free, open source - all that good stuff - but I can still use it without tearing out my hair. We're not all as brilliant as you, my friend. I still need icons to start my programs, and I want to be able to install them without... I don't know... unpacking? compiling? building? All that ***** is beyond me. I'm happy with a simple double click, thank you.
- oderdigg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I tried 1.1, 1.2 editions and never liked them. They had so much additional 'stuff' that it didn't feel like a normal distro. I'll stick with my AMD64 DVD official release thank you very much.
- jamonterrell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3My comment was intended to be constructive. It seems as though he has a popular, community-valued product here, and I just wanted to make sure he was aware of the trademark rules over at Canonical. No need to be at eachother's throats.
- NickDinadis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3any one know what the theme is that he is using? I am happy with my fiesty installation with beryl up and runny but the black theme he has looks nicer then my current (ubuntu studio theme)
- burnswhenipee, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5One is just Fiesty, while the other contains REAL ULTIMATE power! This distribution will flip out and kill people!
- Mejogid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If you have one of the X1600 series, check the ubuntuforums site. It's a known issue with the standard kernel and the default driver which couldn't be solved for release without serious regressions.
- keephopealive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The torrent is also available here: http://www.tuxdistro.com/torrents-details.php?id=396
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I agree.
- jdhore1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Very true, and i completely agree with you, but people say "Linux offers me nothing more than windows" and at the very least, if you aren't tech savvy, in Linux, you don't have to run virus scanners, anti-spyware, firewall, etc...Not running that alone probably saves me over 50MB of RAM at any given time.
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You would be surprised how many people only know ubuntu and since ubuntu doesn't allow you to select packages at install, they think this is novel.
- livevil, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3It's been DoSD-ed (Denial of Service by Digg)!
- jamonterrell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What's wrong with a *ix not being elitist? That's one of the things I happen to like about Ubuntu.
- superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i have an ati with linux, no prob. drivers could be better, but it doesnt freeze randomly on me
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I am not familiar with those wikis as I tend to hop around the lesser knowns or the lesser used distros and their wikis are often times many fold better than ubuntu's. The reason of course being that people think they can get hits to their blogs if they put their ubuntu tip on it because the digg zombies will digg it up and so they care more about that than helping out the community.
- ioannusdeverani, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The ultimate way to make sure you are not dugg down is to say that you will be dugg down... :)
- meteorash, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4So what would the difference be between say Ubuntu Feisty and this Ubuntu "Ultimate" Edition?
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Lol... you distro makes you reboots after installing drivers.... just like Windows... thank god I use Gentoo ;)
I'm surprised Ubuntu makes people restart while installing drivers, etc.. since for the most part it isn't needed unless they are rebuilding the kernel. Just restart X, reload modules, etc... 2 seconds to flash you back to your login manager is a ton faster than a reboot. - benjpw, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5What is the difference between this and ubuntu 7.04 desktop edition? I'm installing Linux for the first time and I'm not sure! Thanks!
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't know about this crap, but Vanilla Feisty comes with drivers and compiz on the LiveCD and you can install Compiz Fusion ( Yes, from the LiveCD ) without rebooting or writing anything to disk, so go try Feisty today :)
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1lol....oh god your going to get dugg down into oblivion on here...
Instead you should just bury without saying why... just like how the people who dugg you down so far didn't leave any comments =) - sukimashita, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Your answer as well as your diggs tell me you are not the only one getting it wrong. Compiz is still called Compiz, the extra plugins and "opencompositing community" now renamed to Compiz Fusion.
- autoatsakiklis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1IPodder is a podcast receiver.
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah, love the Mint, but for ***** sake, give me an alternate install CD.
I DONT WANT TO WAIT FOR THE LIVECD TO LOAD, JUST TO CLICK INSTALL.
Plus, I don't think it likes my graphics card, so the livecd doesnt even ***** work. Therefore, I can't install on my laptop. Lovely, huh? HP hates on the linux fo sho. - Cimlite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This did not work for me at all... Driver install fails.
Also wondering... you can't actually see the 3D desktop in action with this can you? Since you have to reboot to finish the install of the drivers, that would not work with the LiveCD, correct?
Not that it matters for me... since the bloody thing won't install the drivers at all anyway. - andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Dude, I don't want to build anything, I just want to ***** not use Windows. Plus, those flaming windows are pretty fly. I'll let them guess what I need - I'll remove and add at my leisure.
