apt-get install ubuntustudio-desktop - DigitAl56K, on 04/26/2009, -1/+22For those of you who can't read the story description:
"Ubuntu Studio is a multimedia editing/creation flavor of Ubuntu, built for the GNU/Linux audio, video, and graphics enthusiast or professional" - say592, on 04/26/2009, -2/+18Awesome!
Im running 904 on my Wind right now. Its amazing! - chockster, on 04/26/2009, -8/+24Seriously? Ignoring the utterly lame MS-bashing (LOL DOLLAR SIGN), show me a pro that uses Ubuntu Studio in the film/TV/music business. Please.
Not that it isn't an impressive suite but please don't pretend like it's the solution for everything... - alzmqp, on 04/26/2009, -5/+20For those of you who don't know what Ubuntu Studio is - http://ubuntustudio.org/
- keeling0ver, on 04/26/2009, -0/+11Is there a way to easily install all of these programs/packages if we already have regular ubuntu installed? Can you merge or add onto distributions of ubuntu?
- CbME, on 04/26/2009, -0/+11As somebody who edits videos for work, Cinelerra is not something that will replace Final Cut Pro for me anytime soon... it is not stable enough and not very well supported... even FCP has glitches, but there is a very wide and knowledgeable support group for it. I have a Ubuntu box at home, and have attempted to do video projects on it, but it is way too troublesome, especially when you start working with formats other than NTSC standard def.... especially some of the new RED camera codecs which are already finicky enough on OSX....
- commyostrich, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9Is that a joke Logrus? /. aka Slashdot.org ...where the tech news began. They put up great articles that are approved by mods. And there are usually some really great discussions in the comments unlike digg.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -2/+11I remember, back in the old days, when digg had more tech related stories other than the political diatribes we see now all of the time. Sigh. Does anyone know where to get cool Linux and tech stories. Insert insult here_______________________________
- Logrusmage, on 04/26/2009, -1/+9Reddit, the better digg.
- Benno, on 04/26/2009, -1/+9Yes. open synaptic and search for "ubuntu-studio". There are several packages to choose from depending on your needs.
- bugwayji, on 04/26/2009, -0/+7http://www.openmovieeditor.org/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinelerra
And many more :-) - ScientistBlah, on 04/26/2009, -1/+8Because OS X never made it into the mainstream...
What kind of dumb ***** statement is that anyways? - say592, on 04/26/2009, -0/+7Everything seems to work fine for me. Wifi worked out of the box, sound, everything.
We even have decent video drivers. - Hurricane, on 04/26/2009, -2/+9Can't beat the original.
/. - NTolerance, on 04/26/2009, -2/+8Videos from CNN play fine on my Jaunty installation. Your ***** is misconfigured.
- greevar, on 04/26/2009, -0/+5Who says Linux is ignoring major applications? It's the other way around I believe. The major application makers are ignoring Linux. Is it's Linux's job to make Adobe, MS, and games work on its platform? No, CS3/4 (whatever version is current) and others should be making Linux compatible versions. My guess for why they aren't is because these companies equate open source to piracy and don't want their product on a pirate platform. So, why is it Linux's fault for Adobe, Microsoft, and others to not make their software compatible with it?
- jeremymccurdy, on 04/26/2009, -2/+7Are there even any remotely comparable video editing applications like those in Windows/Mac OS?
- AngelBunny, on 04/26/2009, -0/+5disable the political stories in your settings.
- Voide, on 04/26/2009, -3/+8I literally just got done installing Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop. I used a older version a year or so ago, and was pretty impressed, but never really used it that much....I'm pretty amazed by Ubuntu in general though, and probably going to try and use it as much as I can.
- bringitontimx, on 04/26/2009, -3/+8realtime kernel?
- Abatrour, on 04/26/2009, -1/+6Most people don't like having to learn a new interface every time they upgrade.
- vinc386, on 04/26/2009, -0/+5i've a wind too. do u need any driver to get everything work? or it automatically recognize everything after installation?
- shanesemler, on 04/26/2009, -0/+5Hopefully Ardour in this version won't have a broken open dialog box, making it impossible to import audio!
- x713, on 04/26/2009, -0/+5Well I can see cnn videos just fine. Firefox on linux does suck some balls. Google Earth for me runs beautifully and ridiculously fast. The iPhone requires a bit of hacking. This will probably get you going:

Linux just needs more attention from proprietary companies and things will just work. Baby steps. - marx2k, on 04/26/2009, -1/+6You posted and what the ***** point did you have? NONE!
- djbon2112, on 04/26/2009, -0/+4Legit question. I'm eagerly awaiting a working version of Ubuntu with the rt kernel. It can be a major help, even though a lot of apps don't or can't take advantage of it.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -1/+5It will also get you a bunch of applications that do the same thing. For audio i'd suggest just installing ubuntustudio-audio-plugins, ardour, lmms, qjackctl, jack-rack, rezound, tuxguitar, qsynth + swami (build your own that one is old), or qsampler + gigedit (you'll have to build your own linuxsampler), and either terminatorX or Mixxx. There are also a few dssi plugins not included, which you can find by searching dssi by description. That should give your pretty much everything you need to work with audio.
- bugwayji, on 04/26/2009, -6/+10 Without a doubt, the open software and robustness of Ubuntu and other linux distro's are way ahead of Windows or Mac.
- RaulMuadDib, on 04/26/2009, -1/+5pacman -S ...
- AngelBunny, on 04/26/2009, -0/+4that is gnome not ubuntu. philoking maybe this might interest you? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxfSwzhSn1c or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hosBwz4orOY&fea ...
the point of open source is if you don't like it you can change it to the way you do like it. if you don't like it don't bitch, fix it. - mouthymadness, on 04/26/2009, -0/+3Did you ever get your video camera to work with it? I had Linux Mint 6 and either I didn't have the firewire drivers or kino didn't see my firewire camera.
- rac1234, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3I LIKE GIMP.
- tk0680, on 04/26/2009, -1/+4You know what? Us Ubuntu users over the age of 13 ***** hate you for the image you repeatedly give off.
- ryan83189, on 04/26/2009, -0/+3If it weren't for that horse, I would have never gone to college.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -0/+3AngelBunny--I've done that but the moonbats intentionally put their political stories under news or comedy.
- InactiveCargo, on 04/26/2009, -1/+4There's this company called "Adobe" - most Linux folk don't run their apps though.
(Yes, I know they're not free) - BrownieMix, on 04/26/2009, -0/+3Finally, I don't have to keep putting up with that crappy Kino program.
- djbon2112, on 04/26/2009, -0/+3This. My interface has looked the same (for the most part) since 7.10, and I'm happy to keep it that way. I don't like interface changes forced on me, a la Microsoft and Windows Vista/7 (I liked the old menu bars, icons, start menu, etc.)
- mrsteveman1, on 04/26/2009, -1/+3OS X has the support of a corporation, which is similarly how Linux will succeed. Already we see Canonical making it easier for users by supporting things like native first party media codecs for WMV etc, should OEMs choose to include them. DVD players too. Sooner or later Canonical and the others will be able to demand first part hardware support for device drivers as well, and at that point the advantage of Windows will be substantially reduced save for the established software base.
- geoken, on 04/26/2009, -1/+3"My guess for why they aren't is because these companies equate open source to piracy and don't want their product on a pirate platform."
Really. That's your best guess? The 1% fractured market share never came to mind as a possible reason? - inactive, on 04/26/2009, -0/+2Change the theme.
- ScientistBlah, on 04/26/2009, -0/+2Lol, first off, chill the ***** out out. Second off,
"Unless Linux is supported by the government it will never take off in the mainstream." - dagamer34, on 04/26/2009, -1/+3Doesn't the dark grey on white make it hard to read text sometimes?
- marx2k, on 04/26/2009, -0/+2Adobe bled out money in the last quarter due to CS4
- krueger038, on 04/26/2009, -0/+2You should try a clean install. I installed 9.04 with the ext4 file system and everything is noticeably much faster than 8.10.
- RevJonathan, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2Thanks for the help, but that option just isn't there. Not even greyed out.
- GammaStream, on 04/26/2009, -0/+2Ars Technica
- t0ny, on 04/26/2009, -0/+2I'm running 9.04 on my Apple TV right now :). Running it off my 16GB thumb drive and tempted to install it to its internal hard drive. Even with the Apple TV's limited specs it boots pretty fast.
- plainOldFool, on 04/26/2009, -0/+2I use PS CS1 under Wine with no issues. I've heard that CS4 works well as well.
