- shakin, on 12/14/2008, -1/+21Because it's so much easier to find the right site using Google, go to the download page, download the installer, then run the installer? I'd rather open Synaptic and install it in two clicks from fast repository. As a bonus I know I can't install any malware-riddled programs.
Anybody who prefers downloading the installer can always download the deb and double click on it. - jawbreaker4fs, on 12/14/2008, -1/+20Hey Ubuntu,
Nobody likes Totem. Get rid of it and include Songbird and VLC by default.
Sincerely,
Everyone. - b3n87, on 12/13/2008, -2/+20Songbird was still in development for the release of 8.10, but it will be in the repo's for 9.04
- Grogtron, on 12/14/2008, -1/+18All you need to do dad, is go to this web site, click that link, then that one, then yes to download.
Now you need to double click on the file you downloaded... the desktop, yes the one on the screen under your windows... hmm try your "My Documents" folder... ok
Click ok, ok, ok, ok, ok, ok.
And you're good! - dullnation, on 12/14/2008, -3/+17A web browser in my media play is BLOAT!
- jasmus, on 12/14/2008, -0/+11you don't have 3 seconds to wait?
Also, my eyes hurt just at the thought of looking at that app for more than a few seconds. It's personal preference, you have yours, please acknowledge everyone else has theirs. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 12/14/2008, -0/+9> "Songbird was still in development for the release of 8.10, but it will be in the repo's for 9.04"
Firefox 3 was still in beta when 8.06 was released, but that didn't stop Canonical from including it. - dannytatom, on 12/14/2008, -0/+9I wouldn't say include songbird by default, but VLC for sure. Totem sucks so hard.
- mynameisjudge, on 12/14/2008, -0/+9oh wtf. Amarok 2 is out?!
- mrsteveman1, on 12/14/2008, -0/+9I won't be happy until i can run another OS inside it.
- adderx99, on 12/14/2008, -0/+9FTA...
...I’ve spent the past two days down in Mountain View. Yesterday I spent some time at the Ubuntu Developer Summit meeting with the great guys from the Ubuntu Mozilla-team to see about integrating Songbird...
while i agree that people confuse linux and ubuntu, this time its relevant, considering hes @ the ubuntu developer summit.
try reading the article 1st. - richaoj, on 12/14/2008, -0/+8"Monitor" "Mouse" "CD" "DVD" ".exe" "GUI"
i'm scared. - inactive, on 12/14/2008, -1/+7You have no idea what you're talking about. Installing a .deb file is even simpler than using a windows installer. The trouble here is with licensing issues and has nothing to do with usability or ease-of-use.
- drgmdp, on 12/14/2008, -2/+8don't worry. it is that unstable on windows too.
- Kingoftherings, on 12/13/2008, -9/+15Really? Songbird isn't in Ubuntu's repos? That's really odd.
I use Gentoo, and I use Banshee, so I don't follow Ubuntu much anymore. - jawbreaker4fs, on 12/14/2008, -1/+7Only someone with a Debian logo for their user icon would get mad about Ubuntu taking credit for being the most widely used linux distro... hahaha
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -2/+8You missed the point...
- Kragnerac, on 12/14/2008, -0/+6Even if Linux is actually from Finland.
- Auzy, on 12/14/2008, -1/+6All we need now is to find out why Ubuntu doesn't support systemtap, and still has an ancient copy of Eclipse in the repos. Linux is still much harder to install out-of-repo programs then it needs to be. Hopefully Packagekit will result in a standardised format that everyone can use, so that Songbird can just dump one package on their site that works on pretty much any distro.
In other news, people can vote for better gnome integration of songbird at: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/16153/ - resolve, on 12/14/2008, -2/+7amarok 2 was finalized and released a few days ago, that's what I've been using. Love Amarok. Even a fully working windows port now.
- yesukai, on 12/14/2008, -2/+7Too bad Songbird on Linux is almost unusable. No global hotkeys, no "jump to playing song", and semi-frequent crashes. Maybe they will figure out how best to add it to Ubuntu around the same time Songbird figures out how to convince me to use it instead of Rhythmbox.
- secleinteer, on 12/14/2008, -3/+8I've switched to Gentoo too. Ubuntu is just far too restrictive. I thought it would be hard to install Gentoo, but if you follow the handbook, it's actually pretty simple. The only part that was a little annoying was manually configuring & compiling the kernel, but even that wasn't too bad.
- dmd53, on 12/14/2008, -1/+5Here's what I've determined from reading Digg:
1. Songbird is awesome. Get it.
2. Songbird is hard to get for an Ubuntu n00b.
2a. This is due to problems an Ubuntu n00b wouldn't understand.
Basically, this article is only comprehensible to people who don't need its advice. So... anyone want to explain to an Ubuntu n00b how I can acquire and install this Songbird thingy? - bruenig, on 12/14/2008, -1/+5And a text editor.
- kd420, on 12/14/2008, -1/+5What!? The whole point of that paragraph is to point out the steps people WON'T have to take to get it. By adding it the repos you would just have to go to "Add/Remove Programs" and search for songbird. How about you actually have a clue what you're talking about before bashing something.
- srg13, on 12/14/2008, -0/+4"Linux is still much harder to install out-of-repo programs then it needs to be."
What, like double clicking on a .deb and then clicking 'Install'? - bruenig, on 12/14/2008, -0/+4Reading? Oh my!
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -0/+4Just because you are not use to how things work does not make them harder. Its a 2 step process, open you download manager and download.
In windows its much longer, not to mention that linux users could also just go to the website and download it... - Vadi0, on 12/14/2008, -0/+4Download and double-click to install from here: http://www.getdeb.net/search.php?keywords=songbird
- abbathdoom, on 12/14/2008, -0/+4Some noob put the Amarok announcement in the wrong category, hence no one saw it.
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -0/+4go to the website and download it. Right click and untar it, then click on the songbird icon. There is no install process.
- Flashtone, on 12/14/2008, -0/+4I like turtles
- StealthTomato, on 12/14/2008, -1/+4Wait, Ubuntu? Shuttleworth is from South Africa.
- mgelman08, on 12/14/2008, -0/+3Songbird is really really buggy and honestly I can never get it to work.
- xptweakerntn, on 12/14/2008, -1/+4No! This doesn't even make sense. I've been waiting for Amarok 2.0 for about a year. How can I continue to use Digg if I can't even count on it to notify me of the greatest Music player ever updates?
- Vadi0, on 12/14/2008, -0/+3Wrong - PackageKit is nothing about a standardized format.
It's about a 'standardized' GUI for different formats. Useless, I know. The GUI is horrible too. - Vadi0, on 12/14/2008, -3/+5I guess you can't afford yourself a decent computer to be able to take advantage of better features. My apologies!
- mrsteveman1, on 12/14/2008, -1/+3Are you serious? There are plenty of apps in the repos that are below a 1.0 version number....some of them less functional than even the old preview releases of songbird.
- TheWindBlows, on 12/14/2008, -2/+4I used banshee before but really i realised how much memory its really taking for itself 50 for Mono Library then 50 for itself. I moved to Rhythmbox for sometime which helped me noticed all of Banshees features were so needed. I not am a happy camper with Amarok 2 which takes 30-40 MB of memory and performs nicely.
- tomjowitt, on 12/15/2008, -0/+2Me too. Amarok 2 is great but it still needs a decent interface.
- dmd53, on 12/14/2008, -1/+3Thanks for the help! I just installed Songbird, and it is, in fact, the shizz.
Moreover, the way in which it automatically installed (Open with...--> GDeb package installer) is far more intuitive and (dare I say it) Windows-like than the decidedly roundabout apt-get or Synaptic approaches. Go figure. - PillCosby, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2I'm mailing it right now.
- Vadi0, on 12/14/2008, -2/+4really? lol.
- MonkeyFarts, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2Hi. Guess how you install Songbird in Linux?
You don't!
Download the tar.gz file. Right click>extract. Move the folder wherever your heart desires. Go into the folder, and double click the file called "Songbird." Now you're using Songbird!
Is that too much work for you? Well, if you're using any debian-based distro (not just Ubuntu, but ANY debian-based distro), you can head over to get-deb.net and download the deb of Songbird. Double click, install, done. I'm sure there are RPM versions out there as well. It's really not that hard... 0 command line work needed. - zwaldowski, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2I'm not asking for bloat. I'm asking for a complete media playing solution. Banshee does it just fine.
- kevjaun, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1it isn't as easy as a simply writing 'apt-get install songbird', it also isn't going check for updates automatically. i understand it's a change in mindset and no-one would fault you for struggling with that, but this isn't windows and life does work better/easier/safer/smoother with a centralised package manager.
- brettalton, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Songbird
- courtjester555, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1That's more like the exception that proves the rule. Firefox betas are quite usable and Mozilla is a large professional organization.
- PillCosby, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1the hotkeys work great on my thinkpad, and songbird is fast and stable on ubuntu 8.10, maybe its just in my case...
- thealsir, on 12/14/2008, -1/+2Yeah, following in Songbird's footsteps...
