- spoonboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+37They certainly deserves this. Ubuntu has provided an easy-to-use/install/maintain distro for most people. I have been using Ubuntu for about a year now, after hopping on several distro's before, and I don't feel like wanting to change to other distro again.
It's not perfect, certainly. Many things still needs to be worked out and polished more, but for the most part, Ubuntu has satisfied expectations for many people. - sn00kie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28Good, they deserve the recognition. They have been the number one distro on distrowatch for almost two years now.
- atdigg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18"Yet another example of how ubuntu fanboys claim ubuntu did something first." -- sorry I don't see where spoonboy says or implies that Ubuntu was first.
- suppressingfire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15dpkg and apt are separate in the same way that Unix system calls and the C standard library are separate. One is built entirely atop the other. dpkg handles putting files from a package in the filesystem, apt handles dependencies between packages and ensures that all required packages are available for dpkg to do its job.
- KhaaL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13depends on what you prefer: Gnome is for simplistic interface, kde (kubuntu) has more of a power user interface, xfce (Xubuntu) is for computers with minimal resources.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Start with Ubuntu. If you learn you don't like GNOME, go to Kubuntu; same OS, different Desktop Environment. If you find GNOME to be too sluggish but like the apps, choose Xubuntu from there.
The beauty of it all is that going from one to the next is incredibly simple. - TheCaterpillar, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Shocking!!!
/sarcasm - esotericguy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11you just OOZE stupidity dont you?
- miyamotofreak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I really don't know which to use: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Xubuntu?
- NuchDog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I have never had a problem with apt or dpkg in the last two years or so. They don't seem inferior anymore, to me at least.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Gentoo is indeed a very good distro, same with Slackware. However, there are Linux users who don't have the time to make/build either or are scared of building their own kernel. Linux caters to the absolute computer noob to the guru... it's just which part of the spectrum do you want. My son uses Gentoo... and it's quite robust, he just spent weeks putting all of it together while learning the process.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I see Ubuntu as a stepping stone. Ubuntu can gather the masses from mac/windows. These people get their first taste of Linux, it works well. Most stuff works out of the box and they can do pretty much everything they want, with only a small learning curve.
After awhile they get frustrated by little things here and there and start to ask questions. Someone can then say "hey sounds like XXXX would be perfect for you mate" As the person has already changed desktop once, they don't have that inertia of having used the same OS all their lives and can easily move to the new Distro.
For many Ubuntu will be all they need. For others it will be the gateway to their perfect Linux Distro - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7i would rather go out and try to get laid then sit at home and try to recompile my kernel just to get the damn wifi to work.
- blubloblu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Now, I personally use Ubuntu and I like it. However I'm starting to get worried that it is becoming too big and other great smaller distributions will suffer. Other distros aren't getting the publicity they deserve and as can be seen on digg only Ubuntu stories can be seen. Other smaller distribution don't have the financial support of a multi-millionaire behind them.
- wedderburn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4use Ubuntu then install the other desktops on top of Ubuntu once you're comfortable with it all
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4pacman is the best management I've seen. Far better than apt, yum/yast, rpm. I doubt the Linux front would go with one method of distribution though...
- DBFT, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4That's true
But having one large linux distro which will appeal to windows/mac users can only be good for linux in general - Optimaximal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The key word you have there is 'try'. Whilst you are out *trying* to get laid, I can play around with Linux when i'm really bored in between having sex with my girlfriend. Good times!
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3you gotta change the resolution in windows as well if you have something like a 1650x1080. Changing it in either is pretty simple tho.
- ahvi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Wait I thought Linux was Ubuntu?
Fedora for me :) - springo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Edubuntu! Just kidding...
I've found that Ubuntu is easier to handle than Kubuntu, but I prefer KDE, so I installed KDE on Ubuntu; I haven't tried Xubunt though. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2 No it didn't...PCLinux has been number one for three months...
I do believe I see a trend here....
But I never took their number seriously, still don't.
Still, there are plenty of great distros out there to try...I've tried four already. - ninja0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2GJ for ubuntu. ive tried a few different distros, but i like ubuntu best.
but lets face it, anything is better than windows :P - esotericguy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6may i refer you to spoonboys comment below?
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2And the ratings still don't mean much. It's in relation to people visiting a distro section on distrowatch. I went through more than a couple Linux distros before even really checking out distrowatch.... so it's really just how popular a distro is on that site only. The numbers do give a rough idea.... but I wouldn't take them as that accurate in relation to what distros are actually being installed and used.
- evolove, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I'm currently enjoying Ubuntu Studio. (haven't gotten around yet to actually doing anything creative with it, though)
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Thats because it only lasted a week or two. There will always be a big surge of downloads after a release. Its the trend thats important not a snapshot.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3http://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixVideoResolutionHowto
- Shadowman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"They have been the number one distro on distrowatch for almost two years now"
But when another distro rises to number one, like PCLinuxOS recently did, we are told those numbers don't really mean anything. - srg13, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I much prefer Ubuntu. I initially installed xubuntu on the computer that I'm using now, but in the end I switched to Ubuntu - it just provides a much better experience (everything just works).
I don't know about Kubuntu though - I haven't used KDE for one or two years now - bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13 different gui's, add/remove, synaptic, auto-codec install. 3 different cli, apt-get, aptitude, and dpkg. Arch, you have pacman and that is it. I like how no one has given any competent rebuttal. That is my favorite part. Although it is ubuntu, you can't really expect them to understand enough to rebut my arguments about the inner workings of debian package management.
- morphir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3if we have to start petitions to get the game ported to opengl, then screw those game companies. Take WoW for instance - there are a horde of wine players. Should be enough for Blizzard to make a port...
But back to topic, as long as ubuntu is the mainstream linux distrobution, guess what: they will continue to win the awards. - weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1hah
Gentoo for me :) - TheDamned, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ubuntu its a good distribution, and if it get more people to know linux its a win for the *nix community... but "best distribution" its like an "Best game" title.. it can be a great game but not all the people like or wants the same things.
So use what u like, and if u thing that other dist adjust more to you necessitys then try it, they are all free. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2 @Shadowman;
No,but some of it's users want you to THINK it is....Already your being Dugg down for disagreeing with them and I'm sure I will be too.
I have nothing against Ub',it's the :"It's the best distro in the world bar none." attitude that annoys me. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1 Linspire was my stepping stone...Everyone needs one...Soon I'll be moving onto Klikit Linux, which is based on Kubuntu....And yeah, some people will stick with one distro, while others will play the field.
- 137Scene, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Ubuntu is getting so much press at the moment, truly a great achievement. Often, I have been inclined to ignore the biased calls of Linux, Mac, and Windows users, alike, as to how their OS is 'superior.' However, this distribution, Ubuntu, seems like a truly viable, and interesting option for me... Definitely going to be creating a new partition today.
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yea.. I'd have to say the one thing that I still don't understand is why there are two different places and GUIs to manage packages. This really threw me off when I first installed it(before it got completely screwed up by LinuxMCE). Why don't they just keep it simple and only use synaptic.... or make the other GUI interface better with the other packages. One applications to add and remove programs I would think make sense... but it doesn't seem like the Ubuntu devs thought so.
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1use genkernel, you don't have to configure anything. even if you did want a custom kernel, it doesn't take long at all to build (5-8 minutes on my 2GHz Athlon), thats about as long as it takes to read through some of these digg articles or listen to a song.
I think Gentoo takes more time in other areas then with the kernel, just as just learning how the system functions, etc. The compile times obviously take a good bit, but I usually run those at night anyway so I don't even really notice it.
I'm sure your son probably is the type that likes to tweak out his system, so that probably would be the reason why it took him weeks to get it where he wants it. If he just wanted something similar to the Ubuntu setup with OpenOffice, Firefox, media players, etc... it probably would take him about 2 hours if he was using the livedvd with all the packages on it.
The learning process as well I'd have to say can be a lot depending on how deep you want to go into your system, but it really also helps you understand what exactly is going on and how Linux functions. It's great for the tweakers and people wanting to learn about linux and customize every little thing to the way they like it, but def not something to use if you just want to use firefox and some office tools. - weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Money talks, and Canonical has money. =)
- manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1mandriva spring is the *****.
- Shadowman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I completely agree. Ubuntu is a good distro but there are many others too. It's comical that you get dugg down for praising anything other than Ubuntu. I think many Ubuntu fanboys couldn't care less about Linux in general, it's all about Ubuntu. And unfortunately they have taken over the Linux/Unix section.
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Try out one, and you can just install the others from whatever one you pick first. The process of getting kubuntu or xubuntu on ubuntu is pretty easy and well documented. =)
- fritzek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I switched from Ubuntu to Debian testing and I like it much more. The installation of all the things was as easy as in Ubuntu. I'm not an advanced user, but Debian seems more stable to me and I also have less complications. I dont say Ubuntu is bad, but its just not my "cup of tea".
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1hah... recompiling the kernel takes like what.. 5 minutes (maybe 10 on a slower comp). Go read an article on digg while thats going on =P
- srg13, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2That's a bit of a weak point of Ubuntu (and Linux in general) at the moment, but the new Xorg should fix a lot of these problems.
- XaeroVincent, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Ubuntu is really becoming a monopoly in the Linux world; something many FOSS supporters hate Windows and Microsoft for. Just go to Gnomelooks and you'll see that almost all new themes and wallpapers corrispond with Ubuntu in some fashion.
From my observation, Ubuntu is just an average distro with lots of bugs and limited built-in security features (in contrast to Fedora or RedHat). That said, I wouldnt want to see Fedora or RedHat a Linux desktop monopoly. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1 And anyone who disagrees with them or dares mention another distro might be as good or better than theirs gets Dugg down...
It's a shame. - cloud99, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2PCLinuxOS, Puppy and kubuntu - in that order - get my vote.
- myklm, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Ubuntu is great!
