- geoken, on 10/10/2007, -4/+55Good one. Combinig names with references to fecies/bodily functions is the height of grade 4 comedy.
- shantanubala, on 10/10/2007, -3/+37Yeah. That explains the Vista logo in his profile pic.
- 7of7, on 10/13/2007, -27/+60And yet it still doesn't recognize my right alt key as alt.
- swaxhog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31Ever try to watch a DivX or XviD movie on Windows without any codecs installed?
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30I think it was a good move the developers made by focusing on bug tracking in Tribe 6. First beta is to be released in five days and it's already very stable. I haven't tried to work with the multiple monitor feature yet.
- Schpariel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23You just need to add *ONE* unofficial repository to get all those patent-encumbered codecs... It's not like it's hard or something, it's even easier than installing CCCP or [insert-favorite-codec-pack-here] on Windows.
- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Great quality, great philosophy, easy to install and use.
Ubuntu is one of the best things to happen for linux. - cdmarcus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Just double-click on the AAC file, and it'll come up with a prompt that'll ask you if you want to install codecs for it. That wasn't so hard, was it?
- undauntedspirit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Instead of 'upgrading?' to Vista, I have upgraded to Ubuntu. Love it!!! I keep XP around just in case I wanna play some games. Can't wait for 7.10!
- pixelmixer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Gutsy Gibbon has different "Tribe" releases. Tribe 5 is the latest with Tribe 6 coming very soon and then on to Beta.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Huh? I didn't realise people had a right alt key. I only have one alt key, and the other is alt gr, which has a completely different function. Is having two alt keys a US thing, where you don't bother about other languages?
- DteK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14yes
- richbradshaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Flash isn't installed by default in Windows either...
- acidbass, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Hey Hey now, Leave the polish people out of it, those jokes have had their day.....
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17I've been using Gutsy Gibbon in VMware since Tribe 2 (clean installed Tribe 5). This release, so far, has been the only one I would consider using as a desktop replacement for friends & family. (Coming from a user who is quite happy with Vista Ultimate x64). They still need to work quite a bit on fit & finish, as well as consistency throughout the default bundled applications, but it's very clearly coming along quite rapidly.
- sdigroup, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Better and Better all the time
- fryguy1013, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Human interface guidelines. Making the icons all look similar so nothing sticks out, text on dialogs the right spacing, etc.
- msgyrd, on 10/13/2007, -5/+16Because it happens to very few keyboards and it took me 10 seconds of googling to find the answer.
Google "ubuntu right alt key"
Wowzers...4th hit, with an explanation of why it's broke and a screen shot of the GUI solution.
Sure, it should be fixed, but it's not that big of a deal. - PhilAirtime, on 10/10/2007, -8/+19Gutsy Gibson sounds like a 70s porn star.
- cultist667, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Like windows likes AAC any better. FU wmp 11.
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12hoho, good one!
Actually, I do still use OS/2 based systems at work. Whatever gets the job done. - ksi0ze, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11We really like Ubuntu in Poland ;)
- drouk1556, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I figured everyone was getting excited about some new Polish languish package.
- Mohdoo, on 10/10/2007, -8/+18I don't think comments like this should be burried. I think it's most important that people know the full story, not just one side. Whether or not this guy's issue is common or not, people should know it at least happens.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Every day user DO conform to the need of an OS. If Windows reject the drivers you are using, you're ***** and usually has to go out and buy a device that meets Windows need. If you Windows can't play a video because a codec, you're also ***** and has to go online and find and install a codec. How about try installing MacOS over a Windows machine. Oh you're ***** there. See? people DO have to conform to OS. It's call CONSTRAINTS.
If people don't give a crap about open source, then why the ***** are they using Linux? Because it's free right? It's a cheap windows alternative right? It's like going to a charity and ***** complain that they don't have cushion seat, 5 stars view and friendly waiters.
If people don't give a ***** about open source and standard open format, then don't use it. Look, if people don't like to use ubuntu, fine. Nobody ***** forced them too. I hate this attitude of ***** self-entitlement attitude. You're using free software and you a ***** expecting people to bend over and solve your ***** problem?
> Ordinary users... DONT... CARE. If it doesn't work out the box, they wont bother to make it work.
Guess what genius? It works both ways. The days that "Ordinary users" realize that there are real people who put their free time making this software and actually ***** care, then there's not much ***** point for free software developers to care about those whiney ungrateful users.
Now go ***** yourself.
You can bury me down now. - Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Why? There are _plenty_ of other distros that are perfectly difficult to install. Go hit up Slackware or Gentoo.
- AforAlexander, on 10/10/2007, -8/+18Let's not forget that most of the popular desktop projects (compiz, beagle, networkmanager, etc.) were all done by Suse/Redhat. Ubuntu is just incorporating those features in their own distribution. Naturally that's what OSS is all about, but for the love of the sea-otters, I hope there will be a day when digg users will stop praising Ubuntu like it's gods gift from heaven.
- scribby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Same here. I thought that the people in Poland had really taken a liking to Ubuntu.
- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9No offense, but you're an ignorant selfish capitalist bastard. People like you couldn't even begin to understand anything beyound dog-eat-dog capitalism. There is more to the world than fiat money and being richer than everyone else, at everyone else's expense.
Hopefully your breed will die out soon so this world can finally progress.
I'd hardly say someone who was the second self-funded space tourist isn't getting a good return on his investment. - schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -20/+29I'm not sure why you're being dugg down. This is an actual widespread problem. Oh right, the ubuntu fanboys on digg...
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Not really. It's default behavior is "non alt" because it's for typing international characters because Canonical tries not to cater to just the US.
It should probably be disabled by default if you choose English as a language and a US keyboard layout, but the original reasoning makes sense. - iofthestorm, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18Seriously, why is he being dugg down? That's just retarded, come on...
- ukthom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I read today (somewhere else...can't think of the link ATM), a post from a mid-40s woman who decided to change to Linux for her own personal challenge. She was ready to get a bit further than skin-deep into her computing experience, and has thus switched to Linux. Being from the same ilk as her, I took the plunge after one more bloody update session with WinXP SP2. Sure, there are some things you have to get used to, and some things you have to make more decisions about, but having the freedom to be as piggy or as lean as I want with my OS and desktop environment is a good option for me.
I personally look forward to the next Ubuntu stable release, features, bugs, and all, and look forward to seeing this OS grow and develop into something better over time.
To each his/her own, I say. - FyberOptic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I guess using Linux just to be different from everyone isn't working out for you so well anymore, eh?
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Don't forget about oh...50-70% of Gnome 2.x was done by Red Hat.
- cronot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I Think you're ALMOST right.
Yes, users generally don't give a crap about Open source, they use the computer just as another home appliance. But, see, the problem isn't that Ubuntu doesn't do what they want - more often than not it does. The example the GP gave shows that, and as someone else noted, all you have to do is double-click a media file, and you'll be offered to install the necessary codecs - depending on the media type, that's even easier than what you get with Windows.
So the problem, generally, isn't the OS, but the users. They are too lazy or scared too go through the hoops to learn the way different things work. And Ubuntu IS different. But it really isn't all that hard to understand how and why it works differently, if you put a little effort on it, which most users currently don't care enough to do. - daftman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Ok genius. Since you other other people complain SOOO much about it, how about you and other people come up with a solution AROUND the patent problem? What? You can't?
It's sooo ***** easy to complain but finding a solution is much harder. The fact is that there are FREE alternatives to all those codecs. If everyone start using those free alternatives, media companies will support those codec and it won't be a problem.
You are after all using a free software. Last time I check you DON'T have a gun holding to your head making you use it. If you don't like the patent thing, then vote for the patent reform otherwise shut the ***** up and just accept that it's not a ***** technical thing. It's a political thing.
There are times when people, you know the "normal average users" have got to wake up an realize that it's a social and political problem. No super technology is going to change that. If you wan't to fork out for those "patent" then sure, go right ***** ahead. Use "click and run".
Furthermore, there are much more people using computers other than to watch a movie. Yea, you know those CORPORATE users which ultimately determines everything. They don't need those codec that you desperately want.
So unless you can find a solution? It's ***** pointless repeating the same ***** that people have known for years. - joelito, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Don't forget that about 50-80% of statistics are made up on the spot
- thomashauk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Are you sure its Alt and not Alt Gr because those are totally different keys...
- Chandon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You should wait a month until the final release of Ubunty 7.10. Then you should verify that you don't have any stupid issues with hardware that is known to be unsupported. Then you should actually install it on your computer to test it (rather than screwing around with the LiveCD for anything but simple compatibility testing). If you're actually make that much effort, using Ubuntu 7.10 should be a very enjoyable experience.
- strabes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You can disable the linux section, you know.
- Vektuz, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14I think they're too busy making the cube spin faster
- burty89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7iPods sync fine with numerous different apps (take your pick, I use amarok), I have an ATI Radeon 200m which is working perfectly with the exception of compiz (as the open source driver support for it is very new, and the proprietary driver won't support compiz until the next release (should be next month)), I print to my Epson D68 printer perfectly (it was setup without even 1 click), I regularly play age of mythology through WINE or open arena natively, and use openoffice to get numerous bits of work (although not office related) done. Check your facts next time.
- cdmarcus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The only thing they don't have in their repositories is DVD support, which is annoying. However, for anything else, just double-click the file and it'll install the codec for it... even WMV.
- zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Please! I was much more mature than that in the fourth grade; do not insult my intelligence!
- cdmarcus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8You don't need to enable any repo. Just double-click the file, and it'll ask you if you want to install the codec.
- smartalecks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8he's a Vistard :D (bwahahahaha)
- ubernerd845, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I laugh at the guy who made the Ubuntu fanboys comment. My right-alt key works fine. (Although I do believe I had this problem once... should be easily fixed anyway)
- DnasTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Do you perhaps have it set as a compose key? I was pretty sure that was turned off by default though... although I always make sure its enabled so I wouldn't know if its default.
