- wmuldoon, on 05/17/2009, -6/+41its an african word that means "I dont understand debian."
- mynameistux, on 05/17/2009, -0/+31I hate that I will never be able to use a service like this, because we have download limits in australia
- chimchim64, on 05/17/2009, -1/+19Actually I think Ubuntu One is their vehicle to get their foot in the door. File sharing/storage is first, next is Ubuntu OS in the "Cloud".
- SamSks, on 05/17/2009, -1/+14"...the future of desktop OS will be a form of collaboration between cloud services and desktop clients. "
In my day, we called them terminals and time sharing, used them in the snow, uphill both ways ... and we liked it! - erictheodore, on 05/17/2009, -3/+16cloud computing is a trap....

Works on Apple, Windows, and Linux. File sync. Also $10 / 100 GB a month. - LonelyTylenoL, on 05/17/2009, -1/+13Wow, no one said the right answer yet....
It means, and I quote from the website,
"What does Ubuntu mean?
Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world." - djbon2112, on 05/17/2009, -1/+13Any distro. Linux is just the kernel. The majority of the userland is GNU.
- Megatog615, on 05/17/2009, -0/+11SamSks: We didn't digg you down because it was about Ubuntu. We dugg you down because the joke sucked.
- brickbat, on 05/17/2009, -0/+11Yeah! What the hell is the point of fibre to the home if all international traffic is metered. Get off your ass Rudd and put down government owned and operated under sea cables and stop the current monopoly from gouging everyone in the country.
- ileftfark, on 05/17/2009, -0/+10Just want to point out that there is a free version of Ubuntu One - but it's only 2GB, although I'm pretty sure that's what Dropbox and Spideroak allow for free in their Linux versions as well.
- LingNoi, on 05/17/2009, -2/+12For some reason you're being buried. Ubuntu one is a rip off used to exploit Linux enthusiasts. I say let the best price win. Not just because it has "Ubuntu" in the name.
- computershack, on 05/17/2009, -3/+13$10 for 10GB a month? No thanks, I'll keep with my free 25GB Live Skydrive which does just as much but costs me nothing. Thanks Microsoft.
- virtualmode, on 05/17/2009, -0/+9Canonical is looking for other sources of income, and I think it's good, Canonical must be profitable to keep up the good work. I use Ubuntu on all computers I have, but I may be dugg down by open-source die-harts by saying the following "heresy":
Canonical needs App Store built into Ubuntu (System->Add/Remove is something like that already, but must be extended to support proprietary apps, both free of charge and paid). The app store, concentrating all apps available to Ubuntu users will be the final answer to those who still think that installing apps in Ubuntu is hard, will add profit to Canonical and will attract paid-software developers/companies to Ubuntu. Users will get more quality software on Ubuntu, open-source software will get competition from proprietary software on Linux, and competition is always good. - marmotjmarmot, on 05/17/2009, -0/+9$10/10 GB per month?
- aserer511, on 05/17/2009, -2/+11Um, this is a service in which they're offering a reasonably premium service.
"I already paid for my car, how dare they charge me for new tires?!" - Zanrook, on 05/17/2009, -3/+12I agree with stallman, cloud computing is absolute garbage.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -0/+8Oh, just ***** off. I've got a good amount of years of FreeBSD server administration under my belt and I'm using Ubuntu. You know why? Because after using Ubuntu, all of the other distros just seem too half baked. The only distro that comes close in terms of being smooth is Fedora, and it's package management sucks major ***** in comparison.
If you wanna talk servers, you've got a point. Otherwise, shut your dumbass mouth. - JakeW, on 05/17/2009, -0/+8I haven't cared less about your personal life or choice of OS in my whole lifetime.
- LingNoi, on 05/17/2009, -0/+7How is this a trap? It syncs your data between computers. If it shuts down you still have all your data on multiple computers.
- JakeW, on 05/17/2009, -0/+7But, the file size will still be there.. so how would this help his limit?
50 pieces of 1GB is still 1GB - vagarach, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6Here is a youtube of Nelson Mandela explaining the concept of ubuntu:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx0qGJCm-qU - bratterscain, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6Sounds good. Then maybe gaming devs will follow and it'll be like a generic version of Steam.
- wakingrufus, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6its kind of funny how people have this attitude about ubuntu, but at the same time, there are people who complain about not being user friendly enough.
the way i see it. Ubuntu is the most user friendly distro, so it is really good for novice *nix users. more advanced users might prefer another distro, but that doesn't mean the existence of ubuntu as a "gateway distro" is a bad thing. - inactive, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6Software as a service sucks.
ok lets rename it to "cloud computing"
yay cloud computing is cool. - deroderugridder, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6Not everyone wants to learn a 'real distro' ( please define ) or spend hours just trying to install it.
My dad is now using Kubuntu and he loves it. He's also able to update and maintain it...
I prefer Gentoo for my server but for my desktop I use windows 7 ( I'm a gamer ) or Kubuntu. - courtjester555, on 05/17/2009, -1/+6I think this service is aimed more towards people who want to keep multiple computers synchronized
- GeckoSlayer, on 05/17/2009, -0/+5Well, if you want to pay $300 a month you can get unlimited ADSL2+... We had it in a university sharehouse for a few months, was great.
But for a family, wanting to spend less than $100 a month? Expect to get 40gb at most... - s34mu5, on 05/17/2009, -2/+7what? every ISP has download limits?!
- LVDave, on 05/17/2009, -0/+5Cloud is the easiest way to get a good offsite backup of stuff you don't want/can't lose.. I use Amazon S3 and a product called Jungledisk (works with Windows/Mac/Linux). I backup nightly to a local server, and to a USB drive, then once a week I sync the local server to Amazon S3... I use the optional "use_your_own_encryption_key" feature, and with about 6Gb in the cloud and about 100Mb/wk uploaded, my bill is around $2/mo... My house could go up in smoke and my local backups would be history, but all I'd lose was the stuff that hadn't gotten uploaded to S3, perhaps a weeks worth of stuff, which for me wouldn't be a lot...
- digifuzz, on 05/17/2009, -1/+6they don't expect you to pay for anything. if you want the service, you can pay, if you don't, then you don't.
- batfink, on 05/17/2009, -1/+5May as well give the free service a go!
- caish5, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4Killer idea!
- SamSks, on 05/17/2009, -3/+7"...Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation and creator of the computer operating system GNU ..."
So, where can I get this GNU operating system? - alexforcefive, on 05/17/2009, -3/+7Aww, I feel bad when I read articles like this. I want to support ubuntu but their merch isn't as free (libre) as their OS. And I really have no use for this service. Maybe I should stop being lazy and figure out an appropriate group (FSF?) to donate to
- LingNoi, on 05/17/2009, -2/+6What does that mean exactly? I keep hearing they have bigger plans for Ubuntu one however if you look on launchpad and in the Ubuntu One mailinglists there is nothing. It's simply a dropbox clone which is more expensive and only works on Ubuntu.
All of that could be forgiven if it was open source however the server isn't so it's worse.
The only thing I can come up with is the sharing of data between apps. Well I can do that with dropbox and some symbolic links so what's so amazing about this? Nothing. - Frostek, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3There are guys in my department with 20+ years of experience with Unix, and they all seem to love messing around in Ubuntu, so clearly your "training wheels" comment might be off the mark.
Yes, it has a user friendly finish, but I find that you can still go under the hood and be as technical as you want, if that's more your cup of tea. - Culyt, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3In July the pipe networks PPC-1, 2Tbps international cable from Australia to Guam comes online, and there is a $300mil AUD 1.28Tbps cable being done by Telstra direct to Hawaii.
Currently we have Australia-Japan 240Gbps cable and Southern Cross Cable 240Gbps (might have been upgraded to 860Gbps) cable. There are also JASURAUS (old, only 5Gbps mainly emergency backup) and SMW3 320Gbps, both going in the opposite direction.
We are basically going from about 1Tbps (Depending on if the upgrade to SCC was complete and how important SMW3 actually is) to about 4Tbps This should see some decreases in caps.

- kazamx, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3you don't understand that well then do you. Go look it up and find out just how much of what we all call Linux is really just GNU + Linux Kernel
- timlump, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3Well clickety-clack keyboards are great although mono-chrome screens are not.
- JakeW, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3It's the bandwidth and file storage they're paying for, not the OS.
- Tenoq, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2It's easy when the links to other countries are monopoly owned and run.
***** you Southern Cross Cable, and ***** you Telstra. - JakeW, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2And I thought Bellsouth was bad.
- jay019, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2Only if your computers are all synchronised properly when the shut down occurs.
- unrealmp3, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2The client is open-source, the server isn't.
- aserer511, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2maybe cuz they wouldn't, overninie9k? server spaces costs money
- Tenoq, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2Kinda like Offline Files on a VPN?
Or kinda like using Gmail, gCal and all the other Google services that offer offline/online syncing? - Taiyoryu, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2I wonder if Ubuntu One will morph into something similar to Zonbu
http://www.zonbu.com/
The Elastic Drive feature with automatic backup and sync is very compelling - inactive, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2"On a similar note, if people using Ubuntu were willing to pay a premium for a service, why don't they use other OS in the first place."
Because we prefer Ubuntu, jackass. -
