- medg85, on 10/19/2009, -1/+68Basic, yes - but it's good to have exposure in more mainstream outlets like The Washington Times. You can bet loads of news sites will cover the launch of WIndows 7, but neglect the launch of Karmic Koala!
- threeblackdots, on 10/19/2009, -1/+61Well that was umm basic... I think we need an "Ubuntu Guide for Journalists" or something
- Rudegar, on 10/19/2009, -4/+42lol coming from a guy on digg
- databeast, on 10/19/2009, -5/+32Absolutely, because Windows works perfectly every time, and Microsoft doesn't charge $80/incident for their tech support line.
Nurse, send in the next patient please. - gudiablo, on 10/19/2009, -1/+26Im running Karmic Koala on this pc ,all i can say is AWESOME
- Yeyui, on 10/19/2009, -2/+23I chuckled at the 'linux internet doesn't have all the bells and whistles' part. While it might technically be true (although I can't think of any examples at the moment), IE really sucks at supporting the internet (HTML5, CSS, SVG, etc), while all the major FOSS browsers pretty much rock at it in comparison.
See: http://a.deveria.com/caniuse/ - CCoburn3, on 10/19/2009, -5/+25I have had less trouble with installing Linux than I had with Vista. I spent MUCH more time trying to get Vista to work than getting Ubuntu (or any other brand of Linux that I've tried) to work.
- xngk, on 10/19/2009, -1/+21Really? the main drawback is it doesn't run iTunes? Do people honestly see that as the big drawback? People can just use Rhythmbox.
The MAIN drawback is people have to learn how to use a new OS and can no longer play most videogames. Oh well, I'm happy to see Ubuntu is getting some spotlight. - DBeta, on 10/19/2009, -1/+17I remember how stoked I was when I saw a full color front page on a local newspaper(The Charlotte Observer) for the launch of Firefox 2. The entire front fold was dedicated to Firefox, like it was the biggest story of the week. I had never seen coverage like that for Firefox, as at the time it had a lot smaller of a market share, and you were lucky to see an article in the middle of the New York Times about it.
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -1/+16Windows 7 is more than $100, it's $129 to $220 for the upgrade from Vista.
http://www.microsoftstore.com/s/windows7?WT.mc_id= ... - DiggAnomalous, on 10/19/2009, -16/+29Friggin' 120 BUCKS for Windows 7??? WTF!!! Ubuntu FTW!!!
- zip000, on 10/19/2009, -0/+13It's not like there is a single place to get most of the software that will run on a Windows machine either. When I first discovered the repository - using debian at the time - I was just blown away. All of that software! Available for free! It is amazing. Windows just doesn't compare.
- Solkre, on 10/19/2009, -1/+13Are you using Ubuntu? It seems to come with many more exclamation points than I would need.
- T8erT0T, on 10/19/2009, -4/+14"I haven't played with 9.10 yet"
So shut up.
I use Ubuntu as my only OS, I enjoy it, but you don't deserve to get paid to write an article about the hope something has without trying it compared to W7 or Snow Leopard.
Why not make an article praising how Manic Mongoloid (fictional) will dominate everything while you're at it?
Another trite, forecast-of-hope article that is a traffic magnet and offers nothing new to the dialogue. - javaroast, on 10/19/2009, -0/+10http://www.ubuntu.com/support/services
- zip000, on 10/19/2009, -1/+11I've been dual booting ever since I built my new computer. Actually, prior to that it was a Linux only household - but the new machine was built with gaming in mind, so I installed my dusty old copy of XP....and eventually put on the Windows 7 trial once it came out.
To me, Linux - using primarily Ubuntu at home - is just far and away a better OS, but it doesn't really do games very well. I know I can make them mostly work under WINE, but it just seems easier to go with Windows since the games were all built to be run on windows anyway. - reiggin, on 10/19/2009, -2/+11"Ubuntu will work on Intel-based computers; PowerPC-based machines can find some new life with a Linux distribution called Debian, available at debian.org."
Um, wrong. Ubuntu has PowerPC builds. I have Ubuntu 9.04 on a PowerPC iMac. - Chrisfromdevon, on 10/19/2009, -8/+17pointless
- FormerBabby, on 10/19/2009, -3/+11Its for the mainstream audience. Very few people know what Linux or Ubuntu are. Articles like this raise awareness among the general population.
- killdashnine, on 10/19/2009, -3/+11They need a new tech writer, or at least hire a geek who knows WTF they're talking about.
- colinmhayes, on 10/19/2009, -1/+9what's this in the description about it not being available for PowerPC? My G5 with the latest version begs to differ...
- Brak710101, on 10/19/2009, -0/+8Flash drive installs work pretty well. Pretty much all I do now instead of wasteing a disk, not to mention a lot of the netbooks and servers I play with have no optical drives.
- nyxerebos, on 10/19/2009, -0/+7No, you can order one, ask a friend or buy it in a box. Downloading is just what most people do since most have at least some access to the net and its convenient. Here in South Africa there are even some kiosks which will burn blank CDs/DVDs with Ubuntu.
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -0/+7The disc is FREE too.
- depro9, on 10/19/2009, -4/+11iTunes is CRAP!
- Visual77, on 10/19/2009, -0/+7I had similar issues with my first Ubuntu install that turned out to be caused by my ATi video card. I had an ATi X1650 that just ran like ***** (this was in mid 2007, so the card wasn't terrible). I swapped that card out with my older Geforce 5600 Ultra (which was terrible) and Ubuntu suddenly ran great.
I thought the driver issue had been fixed in the years since, but if you have an ATi card in the machine and a spare nVidia card, you might want to give it a shot. - DiggAnomalous, on 10/19/2009, -0/+6Been using XP on my desktop for some time, but since Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope now fully supports my hardware, I'm making the switch.
Here's where I got the $120 from:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/173868/consumers_wo ... - jv2k, on 10/19/2009, -0/+6Obviously this isn't for people who keep up with tech news. It's a newspaper article. Older people sitting on the crapper will read it. It's not meant for anyone who keeps up with tech news.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 10/19/2009, -2/+8Anyone with an iPod Touch or iPhone will see this as a drawback.
- minorthreat, on 10/19/2009, -0/+6i wonder if the author realizes ubuntu is debian derived.
- PinkyTheWinky, on 10/19/2009, -1/+7That must be the worst analogy I have ever read...
- removesstains, on 10/19/2009, -1/+7Songbird will fill in the itunes gap, plus its like a billion times better then itunes anyway. To bad the writer didn't know this, also he should have recommended Linux Mint for new users since they'll be mad when their youtube videos don't work right off the bat. but that would happen with windows as well i guess.
- CCoburn3, on 10/19/2009, -1/+7If you buy the machine with Vista pre-installed, then you probably won't have any problems. But installing Vista was a nightmare. I finally had to make that machine a Linux box & buy a Vista machine. (Incidentally, it was an update of iTunes that killed XP -- not some hit the monkey game.)
- Nirac, on 10/19/2009, -0/+6http://www.ubuntu.com/support/services/server
- CCoburn3, on 10/19/2009, -1/+7Was there any call for that? I think that if you were paying attention when Vista was rolled out, a huge number of people had the same problem. Or do you think everybody but you is a "clueless dick"?
- TheSabre, on 10/19/2009, -2/+7People who have problems with Windows are ones who don't understand that you don't click on ads to punch a monkey and no one will give you $1,000 for opening an attachment on an email. People who know how to responsibly use a PC usually have no problems with Windows. I have an XP Pro box, a Vista laptop, and a Win7 box that I've only ever had to reboot for upgrades. None of them have ever crashed.
- Giga, on 10/20/2009, -0/+5"Sure, if you want to wait 4-6 weeks."
There's just no pleasing some people. They take their own time and money to create this release, and even offer to pay for the production and shipping costs to send a hard copy. And you complain it isn't instantaneous? - seandfeeney, on 10/19/2009, -1/+6I love ubuntu but I am burying this article because it offers nothing compelling and the author even states "I haven't played with 9.10 yet, but I have used the most recent "stable" release" Go use the OS then write something about it so you have some facts to make a good point.
- pHr34kY, on 10/20/2009, -0/+5Dugg for acknowledgement of the Ubuntu PPC port... OHWAIT!
FTA: OpenOffice lets you "write" files in Microsoft formats
What's with putting "random" words in double quotes? I can't computer because I can't English? - BrownieMix, on 10/19/2009, -0/+5I have Karmic Koala on my desktop, but I still need to put it on my laptop. Would love to show it off during class.
- minorthreat, on 10/19/2009, -0/+5I will guarantee you that if it doesn't calculator right, it is operator error. Companies shouldn't waste money on this type of support. It only drives the cost up for the rest of us.
- emjaysea, on 10/19/2009, -0/+5I have an old Dell laptop handed down to me by my wife when she got her new one. I cleaned it up and reinstalled Win XP from the install disk, and that thing was just as slow as anything, to the point of being worthless to me. So, I reformatted and installed Ubuntu, and while it could still do with a RAM injection, it's running great. Really like Ubuntu. I did put down $100 on the Win 7 promo for Win 7 Pro. Half off, and I've heard nothing but good things about it.
- prophecy2012, on 10/19/2009, -0/+5CrunchBang Linux FTW
- Rudegar, on 10/19/2009, -2/+6"hope it calculates right and if it doesn't, no customer support."
don't believe the biggest problem with linux is that it's spreadsheets can't calc correctly - Rudegar, on 10/19/2009, -1/+5yes if you enjoyed ME then you're likely made 100% by anti particles and will explode should your particle get near normal particles :O
- Aurabolt, on 10/19/2009, -1/+5I hate people who THINK they know what they're talking about. "Loaded without crashing my main OS"? Really, that's a highlight? ***** this guy.
- mazza558, on 10/19/2009, -0/+4That's only the upgrade edition.
- CCoburn3, on 10/19/2009, -0/+4True. I'm not saying that the software is not out there. It's just that there ought to be some cooperation between the Linux distros. There is no reason they cannot choose a standard (such as yum or one of the others) and all agree that THIS standard will be supported by all versions of Linux.
Linux is not going to make headway in the "desktop wars" until there is more standardization in details such as this. There is absolutely no reason that every Linux distribution shouldn't come with an Add Software button that links to a master repository and automatically installs the selected software. If they did, no one could complain about how difficult it is to install software in Linux -- a common complaint. - Yeyui, on 10/19/2009, -1/+5You have a good point that HTML5 is a draft, but the comment in the article was about "bells and whistles" which to me means fun stuff that is not "necessary" or "expected", like supporting up-and-coming standards ahead of schedule.
