- FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm. . . this is not a Linux vs. other OS's story. It only means that among Linux distros, Ubuntu has come of age.
Which it does deserve! For me, Mepis has been a little better at automatic hardware detection and dealing with non-linux formatted HDDs on the same computer. But I prefer Ubuntu in a lot of ways. I have one Breezy Badger machine here at the Headquarters to Dominate the World, and two more may soon join it.

- jorgevargas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one step closer to a all POSIX world :)
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm running Ubuntu and proud of it!
Maybe next build it will bundle with an AS/400 client ;)
Digg++ - kjartan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm running my live distro of Ubuntu right now just for kicks ^^ Yay for Ubuntu!
- Toccy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great. I'm running ubuntu on my home box.
- rheo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm running Ubuntu now also. Its the best Linux distro i have tried.
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm in Windows right now. But that's because I felt like playing Age of Empires 3. But I was in Kubuntu for most of today. It's fun to be able to run up to 20 desktops simultaneously. ;)

Double Digg. - n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0love it!
- quastor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How many people actually read the article, or are you seeing "Ubuntu" and "IBM seal of approval" and hitting digg? We're talking about a linux distro that's meant to be used as a desktop being certified to run an enterprise level database management system. I don't know anyone who purchases a licensed for DB2 to run on their personal desktop.
And if look at IBM's supported environments for the DB2 UDB for Linux, you'll see that IBM is still pushing SuSE or Red Hat as the recommended environment for the DBMS. All they're doing here is simply acknowledging the fact that Ubuntu will work if you're crazy enough to go down that path. And I highly doubt any DBA is going to want to be running Ubuntu over Red Hat or SuSE. - ashtonium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yep, Ubuntu for my home PC, & Ubuntu Live CD for my work PC :D
- chicagospur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I installed the latest Ubuntu distro on my Toshiba laptop. It didn't recognise the wireless OR the fixed Ethernet port. I couldn't be bothered to go looking for drivers on the web via another machine, copying to a USB key, copying back...
Now back to running Windows XP again. - andellmoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MonkeyFit beat me to it. I too only switch to the dark side for games (AoEIII Rocks). But am on Kubuntu right now. Hehe.
- merm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm owner of an internet cafe in NYC that runs all Ubuntu machines. Our cafe webcam is at http://freezepeach.org/webcam.php
Ubuntu running on IBM Thinkpad Laptops. We love it. They are so easy to manage, and not plagued with viruses and spyware like when we were running Windows - stunder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ubuntu is the best distro I have ran yet for a workstation.... I don't use linux (that often) on my servers I stick to *BSD. But as for a workstation/laptop version of linux Ubuntu has been running soooo smoth for me all year that I haven't used windows for anything. It allows me to work in a windows working environment out of the box and use a functional OS for my needs.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Now if only setting up dual-monitors with an ATI card was easy on Ubuntu."
ATI's drivers come with a setup program that asks you if you want to use single monitor, dual head or big desktop mode. It generates the config for you. I got mine setup at home in five minutes. At work, where I have two separate video cards, it was harder, but still not horrendously challenging. - mcewen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Ubuntu sucks compared to SUSE. They need more graphical tools, like yast."
I used to like Suse more, and I thought Yast was neat, but one problem I think is that it tries to do too much for you. You don't learn what's really going on. Graphical configuration tools are a good thing if they are made cleanly and you understand what's really happening behind the scenes for when they don't work right. I found Yast to have too many strange dialog boxes and things that did not make sense. I can't think of an exact example at the moment since I have not used it in a couple of years.
I have found that webmin with the samba module is suffienct for graphical configuration editing. - gukid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is good news, because I'm going to need a new OS once Windows Vista comes out.

- HeapAlloc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"How many people actually read the article, or are you seeing "Ubuntu" and "IBM seal of approval" and hitting digg?"
Vast majority I'm sure.
Plus, this is not a blanket "IBM seal of approval". Strictly just "Ready for IBM DB2 software for Linux."

What about Ready for Rational, Tivoli, WebSphere, etc?
