I'm particularly glad they've fixed the installer issues. I ran into several of those: crash when system partitions are not formatted, problems going back/forward. IMO these should have been fixed from the beginning. At least they're fixed now. - jessejoedotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Yet another reason why Ubuntu is doing everything right.
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23"Mirros" sounds like a good super-villian name.
"Tremble before Mirros, mortal! Gaze upon my reflective armor and be dazzled into submission!" - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19groovy, i will download a torrent and seed it for a few days to help others get it easier...
- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17why is ubuntu just for noobs?
i am a long user of linux and i run ubuntu just for easy of managment and support
i have installed many gentoo, bsd, slackware, mandrake, systems and personally i like ubuntu the best and for the record i like the brown theme they have... - Endemoniada, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Nice, some actually quite useful fixes there. The nsc-ircc (irda driver) fix might save some people trouble with their suspend.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14i440 - judging from your comment above you couldn't work out how to use a CD drive in SUSE, so I think you would be firmly in that catergory.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Hooray! now if only they will create some easy gui ways to configure samba. No more terminal and conf editing please!!!!
- Quag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13As a complete Linux newbie, I was able to get dual booting XP and Ubuntu working relatively easily. It was a very good start for me and Linux.
- Scott2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Tremble before Mirros, mortal! Gaze upon my reflective armor and be dazzled into submission!"
Whoa. You really like your RPGs, don't you? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@goner
I won't point out the delicious irony in your statement. - bllambert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I am new as well, and Ubuntu is amazing. I had my dual boot up in no time, and as of yesterday, I had Xgl/Compiz running as well. The comunity is realy there for you. Thanks Guys, keep up the good work.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12i wish they would do this with opensuse 10.1 :( so hard to get a fresh 10.1 install off the ground :)
- illicium, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Yeah, they should probably add support for that telepathic mindscan gadget I got recently, I *can't stand* opening text editors and typing things in them!
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9At the console (tty1 if you like) 'sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-drivers*' or 'sudo apt-get --reinstall install xserver-xorg-drivers-all'
I found that when I dist-upgraded from 5.04 to 6.06 it didn't install the Intel i810 drivers. Annoying. Then I just reinstalled from a 6.06 CD. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Tee hee hee. Mmm."
"What are you doing?"
"I'm just enjoying this new release. Tee hee hee. Oh ho ho. Mmmmm."
(Points for reference) - glguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I believe that call that "SWAT" (Samba Web Admin Tool)
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/SWAT.html
I've used this on all of my samba server installations. - LynchMOB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I didnt have any problems getting SUSE 10.1 up and running. And I am a COMPLETE Linux noob.
- ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I found that to be humorous, I chuckled.
And thanks for the Mirros :) - kerbonade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've been using Linux for six years now, there's been Red Hat, Slackware, Debian, Gentoo, but my favorite so far has been Ubuntu since I'm quite simply sick of having to spend a lot of time getting things to work, I may have had that time six years ago but these days I prefer a slick distro that just works :)
- trutwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@i440
My distro of choice is Slackware - but I love ubuntu (kubuntu).
My click-happy dad just got ANOTHER da$n virus on his Windows PC despite Norton - I rebuilt it with kubuntu and my parents love it. All they need is Thunderbird, Firefox and OOO. (use Automatix for TB and FF) Plus it seems to work fine with their camera and scanner - the modem was a bit of a trip though.
Sure it's not for everyone, but it's another tool in the toolbox... - veza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If U done lately all the updates, you should have 6.0.6.1 already installed..
"If you press Control+Alternate+F1 (Control+Alternate+F7 to get back), you can see if you have 6.06.1 LTS already. You should, as it is just Dapper+updates." - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@i440
I'm pretty sure... that's... not possible. For one thing, the installer is located on the CD drive so it couldn't... ya no... install. And once the actual graphical installation starts, it's running a stripped down version of itself anyway so if it could mount itself to install, it can mount once installed. - ubuntudemon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8This is great news! It also saves you a lot of time upgrading on a new installation.
Here's the forum thread :
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1362670
Here's my blog post about it. If I will discover relevant links I'll update my blog post.
http://ubuntudemon.wordpress.com/2006/08/10/ubuntu-6061-lts-released-also-for-kubuntu-xubuntu-edubuntu/ - derkles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
bam!
You may have to change repositories..... - Justathought, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Another option for those who want KDE with a Ubuntu infrastructure is Simply Mepis.
http://www.mepis.org/
I am currently testing it out, and it is not bad at all. Not that I want to take any thing away from Kubuntu. Its just that the last time I tried Kubuntu I was not impressed. Maybe this release is better. Will have to try it. - ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you've been running Dapper, this won't help you. Its all the previous patches and things in an updated .iso
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Good. Now my WLAN card will work with a WPA WAP OOB rather than having to plug in and install network-manager.
As an aside, surely the release should be called 6.06.10 so it follows their release naming conventions (6.06 for June 2006, 6.06.10 for August update for July 2006 release)?
(Oh, and whoa, acronyms...) - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Five points for that man.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I know most of us techies can do it... Try explaining how to configure samba to your mother.... thats the real test of how easy it is to use.
With windows its three clicks. Ubuntu its half a page of instructions (see the ubuntu wiki) There needs to be a gui for everything in ubuntu. Think about it, as soon as windows got rid of the command line, computers took off! - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now if someone would please add support to GNOME for seperate wallpapers for each desktop I would be happy.
- derkles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ubuntu is the bomb for permanent installs!
Dyne:bolic rules for radio stations and multimedia.
DamnSmallLinux is just fun.
Xubuntu is my fave out of all flavors. It runs solid on legacy machines. I like XGL but I don't need it for a LAMP and Icecast server ;)
Yeah Ubuntu!! - mikeroySoft, on 10/19/2009, -1/+2It all depends on your Hardware Config, guys...
Some hardware is better supported than others, it's just the nature of Linux. - babbling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No. It's extremely simple, but it will have to automatically download a fair bit of stuff.
- sherwinn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2apparently I did get 6.06.1 last night, but it was before they announced it
- sherwinn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great... right after I downloaded it last night... at least I didn't burn it.
- coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone know if it will boot from Firewire without loads of futzing about now? I've spent about 3 days solid trying to make this simple thing work.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lots of good bug fixes. This has no use for me (I've installed and updated Ubuntu on every system I can), but it is great for anyone who is thinking about jumping into Ubuntu, or GNU/Linux in general.
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Install networkmanager and the gnome appet.
- d7415, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Shame I can't find a diff - I just downloaded 6.06 last week and haven't installed it yet :(
- animalgod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The only thing I had to do on the command line was create a samba login, which was one command.
- bepe86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know why people are saying that Ubuntu is just a distro for "n00bs". Sure, it has some great graphical tools, but it also has the good sides of debian - power, flexibility and stability, so it suits both inexperienced, and those who wish to compile their own kernel. Those who wish to use a GUI for managing network connections can do that, those who think flat-file editing is the way, have the power of that.
The one thing that I don't like about ubuntu, is the lack of compilers when you have just installed. Of course, it's just a quick "sudo apt-get install build-essential" away ;) - jonocorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I tried to do a clean install of SuSE before 10.1 came out, and it didn't detect my wired internet connection. I then installed Ubuntu Hoary, and everything pretty much worked (minus the video and audio codecs. Had to download those.) out of the box. Since then, I haven't switched.
- sroske, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great. I just ordered the ubuntu distro for delivery last week. Will I get the lastest version? Probably not.
N00B question: Is it difficult to update ubuntu to the latest version? - doolittle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1All the standard mirrors seem to have the latest release linked...
http://www.ubuntu.com/download
The utah US mirror has really good bw... - d7415, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Mejogid: thanks, but meant a .diff patch file - wouldve saved downloading the whole iso again. Ah well though - one night or bittorrent and all is well :-)
- plueken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Any chance it's The IT Crowd, episode 4, the Red Door?
- giancydni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1uhh.. am I the only one who can't access the servers right now? digg effect?
