Ubuntu In The United States
fridge.ubuntu.com — The Ubuntu US Teams Mentoring Project is working hard to get an approved Local Community (LoCo) Team in every state by the end of 2007. At the beginning of the year, there were only a couple state teams (see the map). Now, 7 months later, there is a LoCo in just about every state, minus a handful (see the updated map). See http://ubuntu-us.org.

- bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4More ubuntu separatism, how about LUGs?
- Phoenyx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13It's not either/or. I'm a member of my local linux user group and local ubuntu group. Members of the ubuntu group ocasionally do presentations for the linux group.
- Ashex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9It's actually easier to maintain an ubuntu team when there is a LUG present, We're reviving a fairly large one over here to get things started.
- kuyaedz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10http://utah.ubuntu-us.org - Utah Team here
- abandonedhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm going to join as soon as I can get access to my gmail. I'm at work.
- Salin, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4Would support this if I still used Ubuntu. Remember, the best way to cut through the Microsoft FUD is by viral marketing.
- Weejay, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Ubuntu is the first distro ever where I felt at ease using my computer in a totally free environment. Had tried Red Hat 6, Mandrake 7, Debian Sarge before, to no avail. Rock on guys. Looking forward to Gutsy.
- weizbox, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1those other ditrso were to no avail at 'felt at ease sing my computer in a totally free environment' ?
Was it the brown? =P - init100, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4"Had tried Red Hat 6"
Excuse me, but Red Hat Linux 6 is ancient. You might want to try Fedora 7 to get an updated view of Red Hat systems. It is actually very similar to Ubuntu.
- weizbox, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1those other ditrso were to no avail at 'felt at ease sing my computer in a totally free environment' ?
- DiggsOnlyJew, on 10/10/2007, -23/+6There's also a KKK "team" in every state.
- flashingcurser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Yes but they generally don't have an Asian, African, and European in their logo.....
- ertrules22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Have you read what Ubuntu means? I think you should.
- cricoste90, on 10/10/2007, -33/+5Buried as linux spam.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Blocked for being an annoying *****.
- chawkie, on 10/10/2007, -31/+5If I have to hear one more ***** thing about Ubuntu...I swear they must have bought Digg when I wasn't paying attention...
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Welcome to /linux_unix
- murlox, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Do people need mentors in order to operate Ubuntu?
- itanshi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6the businesses and school and soccer moms do. they tend to.
- Vorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There are people who are volunteering to help new teams get up and running. It's much easier to get a team set up if you have someone helping you who's already gone through the process.
- musbou, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I think it's important not just to create awareness of Ubuntu, but also Linux and open-source software as a whole.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The entire idea of a LoCo is to build upon many regional LUGs. It's not just about Ubuntu more the "spirit of" if you will.
- gfixler, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5I can't wait for Ubuntu Squad, a highly trained staff of on-call Ubuntu support specialists in custom painted orange/brown VW Beetles, ready to stop by my place at a moment's notice to fix my computer, and secretly steal my porn. The future is looking great.
- Phoenyx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3wha?! what does geek squad have to do with local ubuntu communities?
- flashingcurser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yes but ours will not be the NEW beetle!
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, it has to be cool... like the Cooper/S
- tristanbob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ubuntu Utah Team member here!
- dthomasdigital, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Ubuntu New Mexico sound off, if you in the state of New Mexico come join us.
- AlanLivingston, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2"Now, 7 months later, there is a LoCo in just about every state, minus a handful (see the updated map)"
I don't think 31 out of 50 states counts as "just about every state". Neither does 19 states count as a handful.
But, Yeah, wave the flag some more. After all, this _IS_ one of our more pressing social issues today.- andrewcole836, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's funny how that argument comes up about just about anything. There's of course always going to be more pressing "social issues" facing us, and all the generations to come, just like all the generations behind us. Does that make this un-important? To some maybe, but just because you're not interested doesn't mean people who are enthusiatic about it should feel bad for "waving their flag" a little bit.
- AlanLivingston, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1There's waving the flag and then there's being unable to count.
This is an instance of being unable to count. Missing almost 40% of your target doesn't fit any definition of the modifier "just about every...".
- AlanLivingston, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1There's waving the flag and then there's being unable to count.

- JimmyRyan, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2Don't get me wrong.. I love Ubuntu, but can't we leave the front page for things that matter?
- ghindo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You're new to digg, aren't you? Since when is the front page reserved for things that matter?
- AlanLivingston, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Stuff that matters. That's part of Slashdot's tagline. You're on the wrong site.
- JimmyRyan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Actually I have been a member 2 years longer than you, maybe I am just trying to remember it when there wasn't as much ignorance.
- pyman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Ubuntu alabama...

- ubuntuholic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Anybody up for an Ubuntu NV team?
- andrewcole836, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That's funny, just posted right after you. Las Vegas is in serious need of some Ubuntu help. I would love to attend group stuff, but don't have the time to try to start something myself.
- andrewcole836, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Wish there was something going on in Las Vegas, NV. There is stuff in Utah, but it's too far away to be easy to get too.
- stinkfart, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hey why not join us in #ubuntu-us and figure out what it is going to take to get something started in Vegas. Lots of people there to help make it easy for you.

w00t! - backwoodsbob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I didn't realize their were so many linux/Ubuntu users on Digg. Go for it, the door is open.
With more users comes faster development of even better free software. We all gain, as opposed to just a few. - boredblogging, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5There is an Ubuntu Georgia Team as well: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GeorgiaUSTeam.
