- growler1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Thanks for this.
Well, I wanna say that I appreciate when people who are gifted with computer savvy post these things. I'm learning Linux, but not really there yet. I rely on digg and other places on the net to learn about all and sundry.
So if you're one of the nice guys(or gals) who shares your knowledge and time, cheers and thanks very much. - ibis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Once it's officially released the next time your computer checks for updates it says "there is a new version of ubuntu, do you want to install it?" and you click Yes. Is that easy enough for you?
None of this difficult to do CD inserting. - copperhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15glitchbit:
[sarcasm]Yeah, you're right... upgrading my Windows XP box to Vista was so much easier.[/sarcasm]
It's beta software. When Edgy is released, Ubuntu will magically upgrade itself, just like it did with Dapper. - derkles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14How to upgrade Windows:
Buy Windows, wait 7 years for an upgrade. - SundayTrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13gksu "update-manager -c -d"
Easiest O/S update I've ever done!
Not a single problem :-) - danrien, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14im struggling to see your point glitchbit. some ppl are unaware of how to do it. stop being elitist man.
- danknerd, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17thanks!
with AIGLX support built and the new beta nvidia drivers, beryl is gonna rock! Vista and OSX wont be able to even come close to the pimpness of Edgy/AIGLX/Beryl - BillyEveryteen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Well, this is for upgrading the OS version without reformatting and losing data. Can that be easily done (or even at all) with Windows?
- jdong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Umm, OS upgrades are not trivial, whether it's Windows or any other operating system. Ubuntu has quite a smooth upgrade path the way it is, it's hard to find much easier ones than this.
And that one-click button to upgrade to vista is not anywhere near failproof... Nor were the one-click upgrade options for all the previous versions of Windows. - rynoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Direct Link

It's the community willing to help those who genuinely want to learn that will help Linux become more popular for the desktop. I'm an example of this myself. I'm hooked on Ubuntu and Linux in general now because of the support. - Disease, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5^__^
- bepe86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You honestly can't compare upgrading from an Ubuntu stable to Ubuntu Beta and XP to Vista beta. This howto is basically (since it's been "diggdotted", as follows:
"Don’t forget this is a BETA release and as such, shouldn’t be considered stable. You’ve been warned!
If you’re running plain vanilla Ubuntu, simply use this command:
gksu “update-manager -c -d”
If you’d prefer to do it through Apt, then use this:
sudo sed -e ’s/sdapper/ edgy/g’ -i /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Then to make sure everything works
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg –configure -a
Or, go to the Official Upgrades website for other ways to do it!
I’ve got it finishing up right now on a server on which I decided to do a clean install. The latest beta Automatix is currently setting up various codecs and 3rd party bits and pieces. I’ll have more thoughts on Eft early next week.
geek out."

Damn hard, wouldn't you agree? I mean, it's one line in the console, that gives me headaches.
Edit: damn, that comment was supposed to be a reply :( - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Smooth installation.. wait would that include errors with configuring pre-depend packages? And other crap that does not let me upgrade.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36.06 is the stable LTS release and will basically be well supported for years to come, even after Eft is out. Eft is the bleeding edge version where Ubuntu tries new things and the more impatient among us get new toys.
If you want stability then stick with Dapper but be prepared for new apps not to get back ported quickly. If you want to be at the edge with warts and all then go with Eft. Remember Eft is still Beta, I was running Dapper for a month before release and it was fine but Eft is supposed to be a more dangerous release. I haven't tried Eft yet but will duly download an iso and setup a VM soon enough.
I only hope the live disc installer works properly this time. It was horrendously unstable for Dapper and it was a mistake to push it as standard that early. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Theres always time available for those who want to learn rather than complain. Ubuntu has a particularly friendly community which is why it is far and away the most popular new user distro (and long time user in my case) while not necessarily being the easiest to use.

- ibis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My understanding is that the main myth packages are at 0.20, but the plugins haven't been updated yet. This will happen before offical release though.
- happyhappyhappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So, I am using Ubuntu 6.06 - my question is: what is it in 6.10 that would make me want to rush to upgrade?
- stewacide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Beware, Edgy is still quite unstable: or rather many of the packages are.
Azureus stopped working when I upgraded to Edgy, and no amount of messing with packaged and un/reinstalling stuff seems to help. I think Java is somehow broken, but just enough to make any version of Azureus not work :( - bigtrouble77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1try ktorrent. There's may torrent apps in the repos that should work fine, ktorrent being my fav.
You might want to use the sun java to get azureus working. - lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you definitely need the sun java. That is a requirement for Azureus. If it runs on anything else, that's luck. The Azureus site even tells you this. I'm assuming the OP had already done this before the upgrade if his Azureus was working then
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The X debacle was the only real stopping point. Debian achieves stability by keeping a stable distro for around 1.5 years. Kind of like Dapper LTS you could say. Dapper is stable now and should be the first port of call for businesses and people not interested in the OS itself.
Remember Ubuntu are still new to this. Debian has been around for over a decade so knows how to deal with issues, give them time to get things right. - futaris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mythtv 0.20-3ubuntu3 packages are there I think... Haven't tested it yet. But there is a thread on ubuntuforums.org about this.
- TabooTreez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's very nice to see Ubuntu coming along so nicely. Im currently running PcLinuxOS and ive been switching distros sense I first installed linux back in the day. I can say that I cant ***** decided on any distro. But I do like apt based distros. I just wish there was a distro with the features of Suse, "up to date" packages like gentoo, and the speed of slackware. With apt for package management of course.
sinserly Marijuana - maino82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does anyone who's upgraded to edgy know if they've included mythtv .2 (or even .19 for that mater) into the official repos? i haven't been able to find info on whether it was added or not so far.
- leohart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have some unresolvable problem with my package system (guess the installation of Compiz Aiglx kindda cause this problem). I am pretty sure that things will get ironed out in days to come.
I *heart* Ubuntu - galador, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it really necessary to have a video on how to do this? All you have to do is type the command Sunday Train provided, and bam, follow the prompts and you have a fully upgraded installation.
- ibis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1happyhappyhappy: If you don't already know that you want it then, no, you don't want it. It's still Beta.
When it comes out it will just have newer versions of everything, it's up to you to decide whether you want that. Note that Edgy is planned to be a bit more experimental than previous versions, so if you want rock solid you might want to stick with 6.06. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1KTorrent proving very useful now, especially with the scheduler. It's heading down the uTorrent path and that can only be a good thing.
Sun Java is a basic requirement for running Java on Linux. I'm sorry to the GNU fans but GCJ is not good enough yet and I'm not going to cripple my computer over the Java trap. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not use Gentoo with binary packages. It can be done.
- jdong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another vote for KTorrent. I've spent a deal of time to keep Ubuntu KTorrent up-to-date with the outside world.... 2.0.2 just hit dapper-backports. Coming soon once the beta dust clears is a 2.0.2 patched build that improves download speeds, courtesy of KTorrent SVN.
If you want to use Azureus, you'll get the lowest RAM consumption (around 90-100MB RSS) and fastest speeds from Sun Java. Download a 2.5.0.0 package from the official site, though, as the packages in Ubuntu's repositories have known issues. I've spent nearly 10 hours trying to get Azureus 2.5.0.0 + fedora patches to compile in Ubuntu, so we can have an Azureus 2.5.0.0 package for good, but it has not been working too nicely for me. GCC Java runs Azureus 2.5.0.0 ok, but RAM usage is around 10MB higher, and unless you natively compile Azureus jars into a .db, it's slower.
The observant user notes, Azureus's "low" memory consumption of 100MB does not come close to KTorrent's 25MB :) - straxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, you don't swear? That explains alot about you, actually. I wondered where all that bottled up hate came from. i440, you are a great example of how it is possible to be vile through words without using a single 'swear' word.
It's not the words you use, it's how you use them. Rather than claiming the moral high ground by pointing out that you don't use 'those' words, try doing something positive with the ones you do use. - iterator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Careful before you upgrade, you might end up not being able to boot. Use the live CD to make sure Ubuntu will boot first.
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/58489 - jabbar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7@billy
well...there is the option to keep all information when upgrading to vista. just a simple click of a button. easy enough for ya? - postaldave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1big fan of pclinuxos myself.
mega props out to texstar! - rynoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Upgrade finished without error on my Asus M6 laptop, but when I tried to boot an xserver error popped up and the boot froze. This happened everytime I booted, both in normal and failsafe boot modes. Guess I'll try again when a stable version is released.
- oxandrolone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You have to uninstall the open source java alternative that comes with ubuntu. i think it's called gcj or something like that. google for it.
- cfleap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If we are going to talk about debacle....lets talk about windows. Lets see, no choice but to pay for the software, crappy telephone support, not to mention plug and pray. With all the problems with the alternative at least with Ubuntu and other linux distros, one can actually diagnose a problem. Think of the respective budgets of Ubuntu and MicroJank, and then think of which debacle is true a debacle!
- gjeffrey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0upgraded, with some bumps, but instead of the handsome splash screen i have a testpattern of sorts. looks like a broadcast test pattern.
- fujiman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Hmmm. As nice as Ubuntu looks, they don't really do a good job making sure things are OK before releasing it in the final builds. CUPS problems, the X debacle... It seems like they branched from Debian and had a stable beginning (hence their fanbase), but the longer they stray from Debian, the crappier the distro gets.
Of course, all they would have to do is test their software before releasing it.
Oh well. - i440, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0@Gman1223
Almost! It should really be:
"Don’t forget, this is a comment of i440's, and as such, shouldn’t be considered [insert positive word of choice here]"
No swearing on my end though because I refuse to. XD - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6glitch: Its the year of the linux desktop! Haven't you heard! Its just so easy ;-)
- postaldave, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1don't you people have a forum?
- mvanhorn, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4I said this to my friend after he showed me his newest release of Ubunto
M: Have you ever met another ubuntu nerd?
L: Not in person... - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -24/+6Windows and Mac are even easier: insert cd, then click the mouse button.
Sorry, couldn't resist. The biggest thing preventing the adoption of Linux is the console and the fact that nearly all the FAQs and howtos include many many references to said console, and not to "Click here" like the Windows/Mac faqs. - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -31/+7sad when you have to post a how to for upgrading an OS
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -41/+2"Don’t forget this is a UBUNTU release and as such, shouldn't be considered stable."
Fixed.
