- SpeKopuZ, on 11/18/2007, -23/+249those are way too dark
- Stijngysemans, on 11/18/2007, -14/+136i like the idea of a darker theme but this is way too dark
- dillyhoo, on 11/18/2007, -3/+47This isn't going to be what Ubuntu will be. they're moving away from the brown color scheme, and a distro intended for the masses won't have black all over the place, no matter what direction they go in.
- Gijsterbeek, on 11/18/2007, -2/+37I like the way the menu bar is integrated with the title bar. Also I would like it when the theme contrast would adapt itself to the environment light (as measured by a webcam, for example). I keep adjusting the contrast settings of my monitor, because at the moment I can't select a theme without having to change things in ten different places (especially so as I use GTK apps and QT apps side by side, which require a different config.
- RichPowers, on 11/18/2007, -2/+32Pros: The design itself is sleek and clean. It's the kind of classy minimalist style I really enjoy.
Cons: The charcoal color is too dark like others have said. And the orange color used for the date/time bar is too bright for the rest of the theme.
If the designers are going for a darker look, might I suggest basing it on the blue elephant hide backdrop that made the rounds months ago? It has blues and blacks, yet doesn't look near as brooding as this.

Once more official designs make the rounds, make sure to offer your input through the Ubuntu forums and stuff. - Compserd, on 11/18/2007, -4/+30I really like Ubuntu, but this looks like an Ubuntu EMO Edition. Way too dark.
- inactive, on 11/18/2007, -0/+23buried as *****
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyTheme - Yogurth, on 11/18/2007, -10/+33Dark isn't the problem as much as the overall Unoriginality of the theme(OSX toolbars and widgets, Vista icons....). I hope this is just a mockup. LInux has it's own look and making OSX/Vista ripoff is a terrible idea. Ubuntu hopefully has a designer team dedicated to making Ubuntu original looking OS.
- phathurkryme, on 11/18/2007, -7/+28Wow ... if Ubuntu actually looked like that, or remotely close, I might actually use the default theme. While it may be a touch too dark, I much prefer it over the current theme.
- JamesSaveker, on 11/18/2007, -2/+20I think it looks awful, but then the beauty of Linux is it's total customization ability..
- inactive, on 11/18/2007, -2/+19These are on deviantart by some dude, who gives a *****, ffs it looks crap and unprofessional anyway.
Wait for the real theme and bury this as inaccurate blog *****. - centx, on 11/18/2007, -8/+22I really love the idea, seems much more "serious" (mature maybe?) than the current one, if I'm allowed to say that =)
- manitoba98xp, on 11/18/2007, -3/+17It's not hard to read, it's just ugly (so me, and many others). While I recognize that many people like that, I don't think it's suitable for a default theme.
- polywaffle, on 11/18/2007, -0/+13you cant even change windows to a custom theme without a uxtheme hack, tell me how is that easier than changing a theme in gnome?
- andycr512, on 11/18/2007, -2/+14I really don't like it at all. Besides search being always-shown in nautilus (great idea - please make the search box actually work for more than simple searches while you're at it!) and the transparent panels, I don't see anything particularly appealing.
- ZPWeeks, on 11/18/2007, -2/+14...you realize that GNOME / KDE / whatever give you the freedom to tweak your UI to your heart's desire, right?
If you're looking for attractive defaults, stick with Vista or OS X. - AnthonyA7, on 11/18/2007, -0/+11Um, no. Either you're just an idiot, or you're trying to stir up *****.
1) DL a theme at www.gnome-look.org
2) Go to System > Preferences > Appearance
3) Install > click the theme you just downloaded > Open
4) Select it
5) Close
6) Realize that supermajic is an ***** - rompom7, on 11/18/2007, -3/+14Don't mistake unoriginal with a clean layout.
I've been really getting into dark desktops lately. I've got the NASA Night Launch theme for Firefox (highly recommend), Vista set to fully black and only slightly transparent borders, nice black background.. Theres still white in webpages and windows explorer windows, which is slightly annoying... But dark desktops are a lot easier on the eyes, this is coming from a man that used to be into the whole white/minimalistic look.. Now I'm into dark/minimalistic.. - chazza125, on 11/18/2007, -4/+15Personally I really like this skin as it's contrast and colours work well together, but that is just me and I'm sure everyone has their own opinion...
- 9a3eedi, on 11/18/2007, -0/+9your problem, who cares?
- UberGeek, on 11/18/2007, -8/+17i really like this theme. it looks so much better than the default one now.
- RichPowers, on 11/18/2007, -0/+9http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Attic/Anim ...
The actual link... - Carburetor, on 11/18/2007, -1/+10I had to close my shutters in my room in order to see it through my dirty crt screen! (light reflection sucks)
Nice, but i hope it won't be the default theme.
Besides, sitting with your laptop in the park, in the middle of the day, and it won't be usable with this one.
Default theme should fit everyone, out the box. - crestfall, on 11/18/2007, -1/+9I love dark, but a distro going for mainstream appeal (or as mainstream as Linux can go at this point) is going for mass appeal, not a niche. I seriously doubt they'd go darker than eggshell aside from wallpaper, titlebars, and panels.
- burty89, on 11/18/2007, -3/+11...isn't intended for the masses.
- mrjit, on 11/18/2007, -4/+11Interesting, because I think that making Ubuntu's Gnome more OSX like is by far the best option and the direction they should head.
- Trel, on 11/18/2007, -0/+7If it's your opinion, then you statement should have been "I don't think it's as bad as other people do." instead of "it not as bad as people think it is". Because I can say for a fact, it is indeed as bad as I think it is. Maybe you just don't think it's as bad as I think it is, but don't say it's your opinion when you're saying something absolute against other people's opinions.
- Trel, on 11/18/2007, -1/+7Switching to or from?
- danjwray, on 11/18/2007, -1/+7gnome and kde aren't distros. just sayin'...
- loconet, on 11/18/2007, -0/+6You know Linux has gone mainstream when Windows users are telling you to "try Windows"
- rainbowjinjo, on 11/18/2007, -0/+6Number of diggs != Number of views
- DBNKR, on 11/18/2007, -1/+7Man, they need to end this brown-orange fetish. Id love some green.
- astrojith, on 11/18/2007, -0/+5Definitely won't appeal to the corporate users and all. ( And of course, any non-hax0r girl )
- HacKing, on 11/18/2007, -0/+5What kind of sick fetish is that?
- aliguana, on 11/18/2007, -2/+7thing is, if you want people to switch to it, the default theme has to be.... well, like Windows or OSX. Bright.. obvious. I like this theme a lot, but not as the default. Saying that: Ubuntu (and Linux is general) is the only OS you CAN customise easily, so it should come with a decent set of well designed alternative themes (the ones that come with it at the moment are.. nasty..)
- Carburetor, on 11/18/2007, -0/+5
Corrupted hardware? - Danikar, on 11/18/2007, -0/+4Honestly, I don't care what their default design looks like. I always change the hell out of it. Also, I don't have a problem with them copying the design either. If they copy it they can work on making the important parts of the OS way cooler.
- evillawngnome, on 11/18/2007, -0/+4Relax. It's just a ***** mockup. Not official. Also, not everything revolves around "who ripped who". Good design is good design. Implement it.
- Breepee, on 11/18/2007, -0/+4There have been enough topics about Aero when Longhorn/Vista was new IIRC. This is just that: a new official theme.
- Trel, on 11/18/2007, -1/+5I work in tech support and computer repair and based on fixing both XP and Vista machines, I'd say, yes it is, it's even a little worse.
- kahrn, on 11/18/2007, -0/+4Too much change. IMO all that needs to be done for the default ubuntu theme is to change the colours and that is all. If you change too much of the GUI it will scare people away.
- technobabble042, on 11/18/2007, -2/+6Looks nice, but I'd change it the second I get it on my laptop - can't see on themes like those worth anything. Desktop might be a different story. Also, if they can get the title bar working like that, I'll be impressed.
- inactive, on 11/18/2007, -0/+4Anyone who's used the default Studio theme will know that the backgrounds are too dark to use for any length of time.
However it's a well known fact that most people will disagree with any change to any interface. - 9a3eedi, on 11/18/2007, -1/+5Vista? You're mad. Now if it were XP I may understand, but VISTA?!
- Carburetor, on 11/18/2007, -1/+5No thanks, I'd rather to use a system that i don't need to use hacks (uxtheme.dll) even to do basic stuff like changing my themes to a 3rd parties.
Besides, why should i get punished and get my max connections limited to 8/10, just because Microsoft
can't trust their own product avoiding worms to spread?
(Try to run Utorrent+Emule on the same time, and tell me what happened. (If you'll be able to browse)
And even if you hacked it with a patch, the next update/service pack will screw it again.
If you're happy with your windows, stick with it.
There's no reason to change from system you're satisfied with. - rupertmorris, on 11/18/2007, -0/+3The beauty of midtones, as opposed to extremes of bright or dark, is that they look good in well lit areas, as well as underlit areas. They look good with bright icons, and dark icons. They look good with bright window contents, as well as dark window contents.
FWIW. I'm not currently running linux. - drgmdp, on 11/18/2007, -0/+3i'm a little sad for you if looks are what tells you which OS to use...
- inactive, on 11/18/2007, -0/+3It's the second picture on the page I think. The second pic is the same as the first one but brighter.
