- motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13This is a pretty cool idea and I am sure going to submit my hardware information.
- leeDav, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Oh for Pete's sake, what is with the Ubuntu bashing around here?
People who post these stories are trying to make it easier for non-experienced users to try an alternative, to try something different.
The stories here are aimed at those people - to make their lives a little easier - not at the folks who know what they're doing.
Is that so wrong?
So what if Ubuntu get's on the front page? Loads of even worse stories get on there, and you don't complain about them.
Just like the way loads of other companies and/or products get on the front page all the time. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, [insert company name]. Grow up, folks.
Oh, and just watch me get Dugg down for bringing some rationality to this place. - cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11YEA ME TOO! I'm so sick of seeing OS X, Ubuntu, Vista, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, Politics, Videos, Websites, comedy and that, all on the front page. I don't see why it gets on the front page all the time!!! Anyone would think we were a bunch of geeks who enjoy reading such news!!!! lolololol.
/sarcasm - pak314, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Ubuntu already has a program built in to do this. Click administration/device manager and click the Ubuntu device database at the bottom. It will scan some devices and ask you questions before sending results to the Ubuntu team.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's a project that aims to build a list of compatible hardware so that a Windows user can find out if their configuration is linux(/ubuntu) compatible - or so I believe.
See http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2335693&postcount=3 - awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What is this for? It doesn't seem this is for Ubuntu, it's for this other project, but I can't figure out what its purpose is. :S
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's for this guy's research project. Personally, I don't see why we don't make an open hardware database that any project can use for useful information on computer hardware configurations, but hey, gotta start somewhere, right? I digg it for the research aspect, but don't expect anything practical to come out of it.
- JrGhoull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6now that its on digg hopefully he'll go from having the info on 10 computers to having the info on a couple hundred computers
- Pilot85, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Why is anyone bitching about Ubuntu this and Ubuntu that hitting the front page? People digg it, it goes to the front page. Just like everything else... complaining will not stop the diggs - we just have to read more of your whining in the comments section. Get over it, please. It'll do us all a favor.
- oracleofmist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5are you serious? You generally look for the bright blue text among the fields of black text. not nearly as hard as a 'where's waldo' picture but pretty simple.
- shuffle2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.linuxcompatible.org/compatibility.html
- oracleofmist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hopefully, I just sent mine in.
- maniacmusician, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The project doesn't actually have anything to do with Ubuntu...it's a tool that's meant to work on ALL Linux computers that have certain components like HAL, Dbus, some python libs, and gtk2. It just happened to be posted on Ubuntuforums because the dev frequents it. So this is really a project for all of Linux; don't complain. I used to be the web developer for the project, but had to take some time off due to work. Hopefully I'll be back at it soon.
stryderjzw did use an incorrect title, but at least the word Ubuntu got this article to be popular enough to help out the project; and it really is a pretty important one. This is the furthest I've ever seen anyone come with a hardware compatibility project, which is the reason I joined it.
Also, to clear out some specifics;
This is not the actual Dohickey program (which is the one that collects all the info and uploads it to the server). This is a little debugger that DoctorMO put together to improve his handling of HAL and hardware detection. It helps him see how computer manufacturers organize information when they build their computers. for instance, the program is now able to reliably (usually, anyways) detect the name of your computer (ex. "Dell Inspiron 500"), thanks solely to the amount of profiles he's gotten through this digg article. It also helps him figure out such things as CPU scaling (what frequencies your CPU can run at), what processor your computer has, and a whole bunch of good stuff.
The real triumph for the project will be when the server goes live (I don't think he's found a host for the server yet; it has special needs) and the client finishes the touchups that it's undergoing right now. That'll be the next big release, and people will finally be able to use the client to upload reliable information. The information will get catalogued in the Database, and you'll be able to use our custom built search engine to search through all the entries. I know, I'm biased, but I think it will be pretty brilliant. - migla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not just for ubuntu:
"Requirements: Ubuntu (any varient) any other linux with DBus, HAL and dmidecode installed. known to fail on powerpc since dmidecode is bios only." - InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's in his first post on the site, and it is linked as mailto: if you still can't find it. it's the @gmail.com
- sekyuritei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try using the netboot kernel/initrd from nUbuntu on modern server hardware from 2006 or 2007 (Dell, IBM, HP). It chokes. This even includes Dapper, Edgy, and Feisty. nUbuntu makes a great desktop aka easy-mode Linux, but it's got a long way to go before they get my respect on the server side.
- cheekybastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am sick of the conspiracy... its like digg has an algorithm that promotes any ubuntu story submitted to the front page automagically no matter how many diggs ...its like that GEICO commercial, its just so unfair. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H02iwWCrXew
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I too am sick of seeing stories on the front page.
The only thing that should be on the front page ever is pictures of cute kittens.
Other cute animals might also be acceptable.
Here is a picture of a kitten for your perusal: http://mfrost.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/03/21/kissya2.jpg - topicnation, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can't believe it! This is too common nowadays. http://cakeguru.blogspot.com

***** off!! - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's b/c of the fanboys. Sure, it's fine to have lots of stories about ____. But when the ubuntu users start bashing every other operating system, and every other distro of Linux, that is when the ubuntu-hatred begins.
No one likes fanboys who bash others. - DevastatorIIC, on 10/12/2007, -14/+7don't kill my mirror, but: http://modzer0.cs.uaf.edu/~dev2c/debugger.tar.bz2

- reed311, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6Yeah, its just become pathetic now. We need 150 articles that have to explain how easy Ubuntu is, 200 testimonials of "30 days with Ubuntu", 50 hardware lists, 200 youtube videos showing someone doing something completely lame with Beryl and 1000 hardcore Ubuntu users who digg down anyone who dare even criticize their God -- Ubuntu.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1What is his email address? (cant find it) (please mask the address if you do know it).
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6I'm getting ***** sick of all the Ubuntu stories that hit front page too...if this keeps up wouldn't be surprised if people got turned off using Ubuntu/Linux because they're tired of getting beaten over the head with how "AMAZING" it is and whatnot.
An OS is a personal preference, don't understand this mentality of switching and trying to ram one down people's throats. - patience, on 10/12/2007, -20/+7ENOUGH with the Ubuntu stories on the front page.
We surrender: Ubuntu is better, okay. - supercooll, on 10/12/2007, -14/+0This is really the way to go for advancing in the tech world. Really cool. There is a great future for these.
