- Disillusion, on 10/17/2007, -2/+36I love Ubuntu and all, but that was a really flipping stupid little blog post.
Buried as lame. - engarak, on 10/17/2007, -1/+35How is Ubuntu the new Ron Paul of Digg? Its more like recently Ron Paul has been the new Ubuntu of Digg.
- quickslvr1287, on 10/20/2007, -7/+35I am perfectly content with my windows XP machine at the moment, so at least for now there is no compelling reason for me to switch yet. Having said that, ubuntu is looking more impressive all the time and hopefully they will continue to make strides in the desktop market. A little competition never hurt anyone.
- opnickc, on 10/17/2007, -0/+19You haven't been here long have you?
- trogdoor, on 10/17/2007, -0/+12"I don't know why the goddamn bulletproof X has to mimic windows and go to super low resolutions."
That is because it uses /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe when X won't start with /etc/X11/xorg.conf, that means that /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe must work for all users, which means lowest common denominator on resolution. You can however change your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe yourself to use VESA at the resolution you want. Installing the nvidia driver manually should be the same on Ubuntu as on all distributions but just in case the Ubuntu documentation for it is @ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual If that does not work I would suggest hoping on #ubuntu+1 ( or just #ubuntu once Gutsy is actually released ) and asking here, have a pastebin ready of dmesg / the output ( if any ) of "sudo modprobe nvidia" since they will probably ask for it. - solo1181, on 10/17/2007, -0/+12Don't if windows works for you, especially since you already paid for it. Ubuntu and many other distros have a livecd to test it out, I use ubuntu because everything is easier, all the programs are a simple command or click away. Also if there are features you want in a program you can contact the developer or even help add that feature. The only downside is gaming and that is slowly diminishing. I don't game so never worried about it. This release also is pretty simple to setup. If anything and your bored do it to expand your knowledge of computer OS.
- Dochtuir, on 10/17/2007, -2/+13you could care less? Me too! I care that there are reqular updates. I'm glad you care so much. Many people couldn't care less.
- elstevo, on 10/27/2007, -1/+12oh, i'm sorry, i just used my "broken" windows to digg your ignorant comment down...
- quickslvr1287, on 10/27/2007, -0/+10what's so broke about it?
- trogdoor, on 10/17/2007, -3/+13If it aint broke don't fix it :)
- sirhomer, on 10/16/2007, -0/+9http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net
- thomashauk, on 10/17/2007, -1/+10Your not a geek then...
If its not broke then you haven't played with it enough. - inactive, on 10/17/2007, -3/+10It hasn't been released yet. You're using an RC.
- jefu, on 10/17/2007, -1/+7An rc (at least a recent one) should be, except for serious showstoppers, the actual release. Thats why it is a "release candidate"
- SanjayM, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6its ***** CUSTOMISABLE
You can change it to a very nice conventional blue theme in a grand total of exactly four clicks (System>Preferences>Theme>Clearlooks Theme) - TomK88, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6This is not an attack at Linux-users, just a simple question. I use Windows XP and want to know why I should consider switching to Ubuntu?
- trogdoor, on 10/17/2007, -1/+7Seems to me that a lot of people trying Linux after having used it years before have a sort of self fulfilling prophecy. They "know" that if their resolution isn't correct that they need to fire up vi, edit their xorg.conf and if that doesn't work they recompile their kernel ( the recompiling the kernel thing is extreme, but I see a lot of complaints about "having" to do it, when that should really have no bearing on your resolution ). Just wondering, did you check System -> Administration -> Restricted Driver manager? If you are using Gutsy, did you try System -> Administration -> Screens and Graphics ?
- Stemp, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6TomK88 : Just try a livecd (nothing will be installed on your pc), and then you'll know.
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
and
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors - trogdoor, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6Apparently not for quickslvr.
- cawpin, on 10/17/2007, -1/+6i have it running on a Celeron 2.0 GHz machine with 1GB of memory and a 1200MHz laptop with 512MB of memory. Both boot in far less than a minute. What are you running it on?
- madm0nk, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5I could care less about people who make comments on digg stories that they care less about. If you are not interested in it .... don't read it. Freedom of choice is a very difficult concept for some people to understand.
- aberdean, on 10/17/2007, -2/+7Does that mean there'll be fewer actual Ron Paul stories now? Please?
- murraj2, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4I've had ubuntu since 6.06, and the only problem I've had was when I got a new printer I hadn't been able to get it work correctly yet. I installed gutsy beta on saturday, plugged it in. Went to add new printer and it instantly identified my printer model and the fact that it was hooked up through USB. I got really excited, until I tried printing and absolutely nothing happened.
Other than that, it seems much faster to me than 7.04, and it definitely looks a bit better, I'm hoping that someone will figure it out and post the solution on ubuntu forums. - Stemp, on 10/16/2007, -1/+5You don't want to switch to Linux, you dont like Freedon and thats's your choice. But stop telling BS please.
And if it's not BS give links to the launchpad's bugs ans ubuntuforum's posts - flipper5311, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3i would love to use Ubuntu as my main OS, but i still need to work with CAD-program and others that need Windows. Else, Ubuntu is really great.
- Switch625, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Apparently Americans really do say this. It used to bug the hell out of me until I expressed my distaste for it in a forum and was provided with this link:
http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ico1.htm
The pertinent part of which is this:
There’s a close link between the stress pattern of "I could care less" and the kind that appears in certain sarcastic or self-deprecatory phrases that are associated with the Yiddish heritage and (especially) New York Jewish speech. Perhaps the best known is "I should be so lucky!", in which the real sense is often “I have no hope of being so lucky”, a closely similar stress pattern with the same sarcastic inversion of meaning. There’s no evidence to suggest that I could care less came directly from Yiddish, but the similarity is suggestive. There are other American expressions that have a similar sarcastic inversion of apparent sense, such as "Tell me about it!", which usually means “Don’t tell me about it, because I know all about it already”. These may come from similar sources.
...so basically read it to yourself in an exaggerated Jackie Mason voice and it makes more sense. Or something... - HonoredMule, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I also could care a lot less about Gutsy's release, and would were I not in fact excited to try it out (and "fix" my mother's windows machine with it). The timing couldn't be any more perfect, as she'll likely bring her computer by sometime this week, and I just convinced her to try Linux out.
- mikedoth, on 10/17/2007, -1/+4Sounds like something is wrong with your system hardware.
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -3/+6A simple answer to your question - security, stability and price.
Windows fails on all three criteria.
It's fundamentally insecure, and cannot be made better. "Vista" attempts some measure of security, but fails abysmally. The fact that you need to buy third-party "security" software should show you that MS don't understand the concept.
Windows is unstable - an application crash will cause the whole system to fall over. I know it's "better" in XP, and Vista only crashes because of "uncertified third-party drivers" (according to Ballmer), but it's still unstable.
The third problem is the price. When I started in computing, you paid for the hardware, and the software was thrown in "free" - much like the Windows bundling deals today. Windows is NOT worth the price that's charged for it - it's very poor value for money. Free software is mostly of quality at least equivalent of Windows applications, but costs nothing and runs in a stable environment.
Don't necessarily change to Ubuntu (though it's a good choice for a first-timer) - investigate other distros, try a few "live" CDs out, and make your own choice. - PatrickBrown, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3While it is true that one could contribute in such a manner, it is unrealistic for this to be the reply to everyone. In fact, many from the open source community view this as the old logic that is used to put down concerns.
Instead, the best approach would be to fully document bugs and provide as much information as possible to existing development, including how to reproduce particular bugs. The ptop arent digg post merely complained rather than providing precise details (at best providing general details) of what is wrong (not that you would expect such in a digg comment, but as a bug submission you would).
Open source is not here to serve you... you are here to serve open source. It just so happens that by serving open source you also serve your own cause. - sirhomer, on 10/17/2007, -1/+4LOL, two of the best OSes on a single machine. :)
- MacParrot, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Wait a second. I thought the iPhone was the new Ron Paul of digg but now apparently it's Ubuntu. Someone should write these rules down.
- MWeather, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3Ubuntu is running Linux? What is Windows running?
- Coldkill, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3No, it's because you're trolling.
- 0xception, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3... why is he being dug down? i too am waiting for fedora 8... but that's just a testament comment on the luxuries that the linux community has. i see no reason why it's a negative statement, or even a bad thing. hell he didn't insult precious ubuntu... (okay maybe he agreed that he cared less but that's not a big deal to not care about things)
- cawpin, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4I installed it last week on my desktop and over the weekend on my laptop. Both machines are far-from-top-of-the-line and Gutsy feels much quicker to me. Apps open faster and everything seems to have been streamlined. The UI improvements, while minor, do make it feel nicer, too.
- daftman, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Security repositories is to update security flaws. Linux is secure is because it is frequently fix its security flaws. Nothing is aulomatically built secure, but constant patches would make it more secure than Windows once a year patch.
- Protoss, on 10/17/2007, -4/+6I am installing Gutsy right now. It seems much more polished and less buggy than Feisty was.
- madk, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2My fonts are still messed up. :/ grrr
- tgrk35, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Funny. Congrats.
- monkeyboy7706, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Sometimes you need to install one of the alternative kernels. Sometimes the generic one is just not right.
- mercurysquad, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Type: free | grep Swap
in a terminal. If you see 0 0 0, then your swap file is kaputt. Common problem. Google for the solution. - yodasama, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2In Fiesty I had to use Envy or install from nvidia's source because Ubuntu's binary didn't support my 8600, it may be the same issue here. Envy was pretty painless.
Envy: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
AMD64 (not using 64bit? I highly recommend it...): http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_1 ... - mikedoth, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2LOL, I have almost the same configuration of systems, and the same results.
- cibby, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2I didn't think I'd ever switch to Linux... then I installed Ubuntu on a whim, since my Windows installation was getting plugged up, buggy and slow. It's not perfect, but I like the attitude behind the community.
Things that I absolutely love about ubuntu:
1) Installing software and updates is so much easier. I almost fell out of my chair when I found out how simple it was to install software
2) Getting my printer to work was much, much easier than Windows. Just plug it in, Ubuntu loads the appropriate drivers.
3) I like having the terminal to do things by hand. It's a nice option! - rinks, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Are hourly updates on the state of this release really necessary?
- Dochtuir, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Seems to be. Is it a written thing only? Like a phrase they think they know, and say it real fast in daily life or something, so no one really notices? do people actually say I could care less?
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -1/+3Arrogant user based? You must not of really tried ubuntu the forums and users are some of the best on the net. They always try to help you on the forums with no attiude, you won't get that being a n00b on the gentoo forums, or other distro forums. I think you should try it again
- mikedoth, on 10/17/2007, -1/+3Not you.
- Linuturk, on 10/17/2007, -1/+3I guess you missed the article on the new open BIOS website a few weeks back.
