- lava, on 11/08/2007, -0/+35At least when ubuntu stuff floods the frontpage it's about tangible stuff that already happened, not, ahem, rumors.
- NoTiG, on 11/08/2007, -3/+32Is it just me or were there about 500 ubuntu news items today on digg? I love ubuntu as much as the next guy but wow... its getting popular.
- random12345, on 11/16/2008, -2/+26Today was the release of 7.10- one of the most anticipated Linux distro releases probably ever.
- schestowitz, on 11/08/2007, -2/+19Very similar to some other "Perfect Desktop" articles. Reused and modified for Ubuntu? Either way, it's very detailed.
- vade79, on 10/19/2007, -1/+9Linux is Linux, all distributions use the same programs, who cares if it's Ubuntu. As for BSD, it's still mostly the same core programs being used. (I trust BSD's kernel more though)
- korozion, on 10/21/2007, -4/+11Another great article from Howtoforge. Keep up the good work guys
- DirtySnachez, on 10/27/2007, -4/+11It ain't the perfect "server", That would be Slackware or BSD,
Ubuntu is a damn fine linux OS, with focus on desktop polish. - hyanakin, on 10/27/2007, -0/+7A lot of you sound like children or trolls...
Each one has his/her own preferences on what a perfect server should be like...
However you interprete this too strictly. Did it ever cross your mind that it could mean "The perfect server setup for an Ubuntu Gutsy based system"? Probably not and hence all that whining and bitching and fighting what is the best OS for a server...
It's very detailed instructions that everybody with half-a-brain can follow and have a ISP-like setup in no time which works. - Loonacy, on 10/19/2007, -0/+6Yeah, yeah... Vector is the "mac" of Linux, we got you the first 50 times you spammed this discussion.
- random12345, on 11/16/2008, -0/+6buried for stupidity.
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+6They said that about Feisty, too. Ubuntu just keeps getting better and better.
- Genady, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5Ahem... that's UNIX, of which Linux is NOT a subset. May walk like a duck and talk like a duck, but it's a penguin under the bill.
- xnyhps, on 10/21/2007, -0/+5If you're to stupid to activate it, you probably can't handle it either.
- vade79, on 10/19/2007, -2/+7This reads like Ubuntu is the only Linux distribution to have these server/daemon programs. Every distribution has these core programs packaged since...well, since things have been packaged.
- koweja, on 10/19/2007, -2/+7so why don't you use your l33t haxor skilz to open up a terminal and type in:
sudo passwd root
I'm sure I saw that trick posted on a website somewhere. Where was it? Oh yeah, the one linked to from this page. - koweja, on 10/19/2007, -1/+6Yes, because as we all know, if it's popular it must be bad.
- radam, on 10/19/2007, -1/+5Bitter much?
- Wingman007, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4I dugg this comment up, then realized I was drunk. It made me wonder: who else dugg this up?
- tropicflite, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4I recommend against setting up your own DNS server unless you have a REALLY good reason to do so. If you're just running a hobby web server, you'll be much better off with a DNS forwarding service likne dyndns.com or no-ip.com. BIND is a PITA (better with webmin, but I'm just sayin'...).
- Hydraulix, on 10/21/2007, -3/+6Title should read...
The Perfect Server (for slackass lazy bastards that don't know how to configure anything.)
I have three "perfect" servers as well. Solaris, BSD, and Arch Linux. Ubuntu has a very long way to go before it's "perfect." - brundlefly76, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3It would be very helpful if the repositories werent completely fubar tonight.
Taking all the fun out of release day :( - Genady, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Are you high? Bind isn't bad at all. Sendmail now... *shudder*
- riah, on 10/20/2007, -0/+2Hey guys, Howtoforge puts up "The Perfect Server" guides for many popular distros. This is the latest one since Gutsy was just released.
- secleinteer, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2*cough* *cough* apple *cough* *cough*
- bytor4232, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Have you guys ever installed Ubuntu Server? Because it sure doesn't sound like it. Comparing Debian and Ubuntu is like comparing Macintosh Apples with Braeburn Apples. You do realize that its the same thing right? Ubuntu Server is stripped way down, just about as light as installing Debian from the Netboot disk.
- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -1/+3Yeah I saw that to.
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2I agree, BSD does make a better Server, however BSD is one tough OS to learn
- bytor4232, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2I don't think any of you have ever installed Ubuntu Server. Its not anything like Ubuntu Desktop. The installer isn't graphical, and the server base is as light as a stripped down Debian install. Besides, you all realize that fighting over whether or not Ubuntu should be used over Debian is like arguing over which apple is better, Red Delicious or Washington Red Delicious.
Here's a news flash: DEBIAN AND UBUNTU ARE THE SAME DISTRO!
All Ubuntu did was polish the desktop and installer, and rename items on the menu so new users can find the apps they need. Both use the same utilites, Ubuntu just makes it easier to get them going. Some of the packages are taken directly from the Debian archives. - tehmoth, on 10/25/2007, -4/+6do not confuse number of articles with popularity, you're in the echo chamber
- Genady, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Pft. I'll get excited when it's certified to run DB2 on a Z series.
- tpink, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2"Why not use ClarkConnect (or any other distro like it)?"
Because some of us use Linux for more than routing. - mercurysquad, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2FYI there is an Ubuntu Server, complete with its own specialized kernel.
- Cherubim, on 10/21/2007, -4/+6BSD, AIX and even Windows Server 2003 are all good server platforms as well. I wish people would stick to the facts and stop parroting how great Ubuntu is all the time.
- tpink, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2How many desktop-centric Linux distros are certified to run DB2?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/news/db2cert - wewa, on 10/19/2007, -1/+3I agree. Ubuntu sux.
- andycr512, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2"If you want an OS that just works, pay for a Windows Vista license. Simple as that."
LOL. - krunchyfrog, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Bah.. It's nothing compared to the news related to the iPhone.
- maino82, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1I'm an Ubuntu fanboi, admittedly, but alex has a point. Debian is designed to be rock solid for server use, which is why major updates are few and far between (they actually want to make sure that when they stable, they mean STABLE). Debian stable branches will NEVER crap out on you, and I would trust their testing branches with a heavily trafficked commercial site any day of the week over most other distros because even their testing branches are more stable than many others. That isn't to say that other distros won't get the job done, it's just that Debian has a purpose, and it's damn good at fulfilling that purpose.
- subliminalurge, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Go play in traffic, you spamming *****.
- SourceClosed, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2Please tell me how the server edition of Ubuntu is any worse than Debian as an enterprise server solution? This should be funny....
- ilovenicotine, on 10/20/2007, -0/+1sweet
- aaron.dunlap, on 10/21/2007, -1/+2yeah sorry ubuntu is not the perfect server. simply because you CAN ran all of these nicely prepackaged apps on your linux box, doesn't mean you SHOULD.
And who the heck runs all of these services on the same box?? I don't care how secure linux is, if even one of these apps is determined to have a security flaw, all of a sudden you have a TON of information that is unsafe. You should always run a firewall (and ONLY a firewall) between your servers and the internet. (/me pets his FreeBSD firewall that has been humming along without maintenance for the past 7 years) - erlkonig, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2LAMP, eh? Too bad about that M. Not so fond of your data? Don't care to do LAPP instead and have ACID compliance and other grown-up features in your database? Still free, still better (for most things where your data surviving actually matters). PostgreSQL.
- Loonacy, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Or:
sudo -s - Gauthic, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I agree with Genady. DNS for Internal use is great, makes a great cache to lower your bandwidth on your downstream (not as big of an issue as it was back in the early 90's for me ;) ), however the ability to set your bind your DNS and your DHCP is fantastic and very handy if you decide to have an open wireless & wired network for your home (not to mention the ability to route packets through your server and limit the amount of traffic).
- xtlosx, on 10/19/2007, -3/+4gasp, a real *nix... CentOS is nice for server stuff, gentoo... wait FreeBSD... never!!!!! I agree, Ubuntu for beginners isn't a bad LAMP, but not a perfect server for an ISP.. I'd be afraid if my ISP used Ubuntu.... heh
- ppp0, on 10/21/2007, -0/+1Nope, its not. If you only tried, BSD is one of the easiest, most documented (documentations are everywhere!) and structured OS I ever used.
- alexvalentine, on 10/19/2007, -2/+2The perfect server? Debian is superior to Ubuntu for servers. Its built with a server mentality, where Ubuntu is built with a desktop mentality. Ubuntu is great for the desktop, but its has no place on real production servers. For the kiddies who want to run it on their colo boxes, go right ahead, but its not even close to being enterprise ready for the server.
- quux, on 10/19/2007, -2/+2Yeah, like Windows.
- drwoo202, on 06/14/2008, -0/+0i like centos too but for my family ubuntu is easy for learning because it looks like Winodws
