That's one short video. - b3n87, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3Ogg has high quality and compress so 2.5mb is fine
- YodaJones, on 11/26/2008, -1/+4Great idea. I am looking forward to see some of the submissions.
- Vadi0, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3Yeah, but you gotta consider that they're already barely squeezing everything into the 700mb CD.
- ethana2, on 11/26/2008, -1/+3I think it's nifty to have a DVD that comes with all kind of extra stuff, artwork and whatnot, but I really don't like the idea of putting all that art on a CD.. It seems like such a waste of space..
- piratehead, on 11/26/2008, -0/+2I found some great musicians through the last one -- even though I'm not particularly impressed with the winner! Thanks to Ubuntu for doing this - it's great to encourage and spread free culture this way.
- piratehead, on 11/26/2008, -0/+2weizbox: We've already got excellent free culture showcases such as ccmixter, various Creative Commons Salons, the media used at many conferences, install-fests, release parties, and so on; there's no shortage of free culture available online. However, the Ubuntu developers have made the decision since early on to include some sample media on the Ubuntu Install CD. I agree with them that it behooves us to use fresh free culture and promote creative artists through our (albeit limited) distribution channel.
- piratehead, on 11/26/2008, -0/+2Putting a small amount of interesting media on the CD enhances the value of that CD by showing all the types of media can utilize, testing the programs that that handle it, etc.
- diggfan75, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1I couldn't imagine many people be interest in thing like thiswhen they have the internet available to them in order to see all of these contents and tones more..
http://www.topdil.fr/ - popey, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1The package name is 'example-content' you certainly can remove it if you wish. You could even remove whilst you're using the Live CD before you do the install, and it wont get installed.
- weizbox, on 11/26/2008, -1/+2Why don't they just have an online showcase instead of trying to cram more into the install CD? Pretty much all of the people using Ubuntu in the first place have internet access, right?
I couldn't imagine too many people being interested in something like this (besides the die-hard Ubuntu fanboys who like it because of the fact that it's branded with 'Ubuntu') when they have the internet available to them in order to see all of this content and tons more... unless it's shoved down your throats automatically post-install, which i really hope they don't do. I also hope they'll make it easy this 'Free Culture Showcase' a package that can be uninstalled easily, as I think a lot of people would see it as bloat. Just one more thing to uninstall. - weizbox, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1I agree, especially since they said they are looking for 'high quality' work. 2.5MB worth of quality work in video is only about a second or so... or at resolution of 320x240 for maybe 2 seconds. The audio and image limits seem about right, but sometimes I easily go over 500kB when making high quality/background images.
