- arjie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55Hurrah! So many people I know can't afford to download a huge ISO because their internet connections aren't great. Besides, it's easier to get people to take you seriously about an alternative OS when you have a nicely stamped CD bearing the logo and stuff like that.
- ntnwwnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35You have 6 days. If not available on Shipit by then, I will hold you personally responsible.
- jdawg19, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I used Shipit for previous versions of Ubuntu and I have to say it is a very nice and painless way to get the CDs. Also you can get multiple copies and hand them out to people who might be curious as to what Linux is. with it being stamped, it looks a lot more professional and gives the unknowing a better feeling about using it. I personally get a 10pack just to spread them around and get people started. It's a really fun thing to do.
- Vinvin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14But after you login, it says: "We'll be back in a few days, shipping Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) CDs."
So they will! But hopefully they'll ship Xubuntu too :D - killercow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I had this confirmed by a canonical employee on the cebit in Germany last month.
Upon asking if i could take a few disks from the table in front of him, or should better wait for shippit to offer me feisty disks.
He said:
Feisty will be available in shippit on the 12th of april.
Just to let you know, The dude at cebit also had the following pre-pressed disks:
Edubuntu, Kubuntu, en if im not mistaking Xubuntu. - ajifans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Well obviously lots of people do give a "flying *****" about Ubuntu CDs hence the reason they are digging this article and making comments.
Is there something about Digg that you don't understand? - UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is really cool. I have always been a big fan of the ship it cd's. Very impressive when you hand them out to people.
- wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yes! I love the ones from shipit. They look so nice when there prestamped and it give a great first impression to newcommers. Thanks Shipit+Ubuntu. I think its safe to say that 2007 is going to be a great year for open source.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I think I'm going to use Shipit for this for the first time ever.
- linksus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Feisty rocks!
Been using it on my machine now for a few days. Its actually the first distro ive used at home rather than windows!!
I got counterstrike source , quake4 etc all working on it fine :)
Everything seems to work perfectly with it, Networking is topnotch as is always with Ubuntu, Beryl runs fine.
One thing most linux newbs come across is the problems getting divx , mp3s etc working for the first time, Feisty actually has an option in the synaptec manager to install them all :)
With the upcoming release of Fedora7 aswell, this is going to be a good year for linux.! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@vinvin
absolutely,, Xubuntu, imo is the best of the lot. It is less cramped than ubuntu and more subdued than kubuntu with the added benefit of more sane resource usage. Even the fonts look better.. Seriously people, if you haven't tried xubuntu yet, id say you are missing out. - raseel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8When the Dapper, Edgy came out Ubuntu had / was fast becoming the preferred OS for most geeks/techies.
But by now, Ubuntu is by far the most loved Linux Distro. I think its popularity has reached mind-boggling levels. One look at the number of different Ubuntu based Distros and you'll know what I'm saying.
So all I hope when Fiesty becomes available , the Ubuntu Guys will take care that the site doesn't go down due to the load and that people actually get their Distros within the promised time.
A similar philanthropic project, The Free CD project or something, faced a major crisis and had to back out.
- iduridur07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well neiby not everything newswise in the world is sensational for you. If you don't like a lot of news about Ubuntu
Turn Off your PC.
Some people live in areas where 700MB downloads are easy. It might be nice to get a free CD for some people. - xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you want to set up a stand somewhere that gives away Ubuntu CDs then by all means. But this is for those people who don't have good internet connections to download the CD themselves.
- papavb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5well edgy was an interim release, unlike feisty or dapper which have shipit cd's
- Pow3rbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes!!! I was hoping this. It is really nice to have physical cds when you give them out/show them to people.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
Then log out, go to Options-->Select Session it will be there. - selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If I'm not mistaken these CDs are completely free(even postage?). So that would be cheaper than downloading and burning them yourself. I had dial-up until last year, and even now I don't have the fastest of broadband connection. I think it is pretty cool that they offer free CDs to those who would otherwise have a difficult time getting a 700MB CD image and then burning it.
- Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Alright, alright. Maybe I'm being too harsh. I'll just go get some more coffee and everything will be fine.
- sark666, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ubuntu is my main distro, but in giving them out, (as I ordered 10 when dapper was released) I had a little hesitation on my part in that I was worried they would end up toasting their xp install.
The default of the installer is format the entire drive. I really believe they have to assume a huge chunk of the people trying out 'linux' are coming from an existing operating system and are not first time OS users.
Saying that, it would be great if the gui installer checked for existing ntfs/fat32 parts, and assume the user does want to keep them and partition accordingly. Heck, even ask the user what os they'd like to be the default for bootup.
The only snag in this is, from what I understand, it's always been recommended to defrag ntfs/fat32 parts before repartitioning. Not sure if any linux tool could do that.
Cause otherwise, in handing out a disk, I'm like 'Ok make sure to defrag your drive before hand, DON'T choose the default of format entire drive, be careful partitioning the dirve... ahhh I'll install for you if you want'.
I wish I could hand it out with confidence and say, 'Don't worry, It'll detect your windows install and leave it intact. It'll take care of everything.'
And it would be one thing if we were just not there yet, but I didn't get the impression this is even the goal of the installer from posts I've read on the ubuntu forums.
It's nonsensical to me to ignore who are the actual first time users of ubuntu. I'd peg it at 90% of them are existing window users, so have sane defaults assuming/checking for that. - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7No Xubuntu?
- BorsKaegel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is fantastic! I will be as well.
- Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When is Feisty supposed to be released?
- gr3yn3t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I remember ordering ubuntu through shipit, and 6.10 also came.
However, after ~4 hours of trying to get my laptops wireless card (BCM4318) to work, I read on ubuntuforums that it essentially only worked with Dapper. So thats where I'm at =/ - EmxBA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great news for everyone who doesn't have (or has poor) connection.
- Vinvin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'd love for Xubuntu to be available via ShipIt! Let this be true, let this be true!
- OldSchoolNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks like April 19th is the magical day:
https://wiki.kubuntu.org/FeistyReleaseSchedule?highlight=%28feisty%29%7C%28release%29 - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg is not a news site.
News often gets frontpaged, but anything the community likes can be there. Hence the plethora dupes, old internet jokes, and blogs covering stories from other blogs which speculate about a rumor they heard from a guy on the bus about the next Apple product. Also, for me personally, this is more newsworthy than most things Ubuntu that get posted. Shipit CDs are something I regularly order and distribute, and were it not for this post, I wouldn't have known when they were available. - snth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't pay anything. I picked the default option on the shipit website that said they would send me 6.06 disks and they sent me 6.10 disks instead.
- ShoulderKnight, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4My first experience with linux was over 10 years ago and I thought it was pretty cool but could not get past the tediousness of getting it to work. Tried Ubunto a couple months ago and it felt the same as my linux experience back in the late 90's.
I hope this install does give you the codecs like you said. This is the only way for this to go mainstream and get people involved. I consider myself fairly experienced but can't stand the lack of support and when you go to various community sites the language and way everything is presented is daunting. Links send you all over the place and the names, I mean the names of the various programs to get things to work are ridiculous.
Anyway, I will give it my best chance to get familiar with Linux because I feel it is a great thing for the computer world. - korosive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great! No more getting an older version for free, at least for now...
- Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The fonts look the same to me. http://www.xubuntu.org/screenshots
- spikespeigel42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1did you just order them from the site magically or ....?
- McTendo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dugg down for thanking digg users for diggs.
- wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1just wondering, how did you get cs:s working? i've tried a few times, but have never gotten it working perfectly.
- Istrancis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Glad you saw the error of your ways, Neiby! ;-]
I really hope that Xubuntu is sent out free aswell. It seems like a better idea than just using XFCE within Ubuntu! - carthik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thank you for all the diggs folks.
Digg encourages me to write more - since sometimes things I don't expect to get dugg do, and things I think are important don't get diggs. The crowd has a mind of its own - so do I :) - snth, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Actually, Edgy was available through shipit. It wasn't what the website said, but 6.10 disks are what arrived in my mailbox.
- thegoodsteer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Hey, I have an idea...
Let's just burn the image and save some waiting time! - quiksliver, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2from what I understand, you had to pay 10 bucks to amazon for 6.10 while they would hand out dapper for free
- spikespeigel42, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I second ntn on that, I will kick you in the nuts if its not there in 6 days.
Just letting you know. - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Well, point taken, but I still don't get the exuberance about Ubuntu. When it gets so bad that "news" about Ubuntu CDs makes it to the front page, that's getting a little ridiculous. It's almost as if someone could write a blog post titled "Ubuntu user goes to the restroom, wipes ass" and it would make it to the front page. :-)
- weizbox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1just install xfce from ubuntu? Ubuntu makes it pretty easy to install xfce, and the download isnt too big for it either :) I'm still not compltly sure why they make a whole other sub-distro for something that takes a few minutes to change.... maybe they should have wallpaper-specific distros too! =)
- t2t2, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Finally newer CD that i can throw, destroy and play football using it!
- Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1This mass fetish with Ubuntu is getting really old. I think it's great that linux is becoming so popular. I even use it at home as my primary OS (although I use PCLinuxOS, not Ubuntu).
But seriously....who gives a flying ***** about Ubuntu CDs? I'm all for real Ubuntu news making it to the front page but this sort of non-news is getting ridiculous. It's as if there is an army of Ubuntu fanboys who search for and digg every article that mentions Ubuntu.
We get it. You like Ubuntu. It's a pretty good distro. Now stop beating us over the head with it. - lagartoflojo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Well, bad news (I think). The Shipit website used to say "We'll be back in a few days, shipping Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) CDs..."
Now it says: "ShipIt is currently closed while we prepare for the Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) release. We'll be back in a few days."
...Which does not necessarily mean that Feisty CDs will be available. If they were, there would be no reason for them to change the message.

What is Digg?
