Also, http://www.duggmirror.com - i440, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30Looks nice.
But please, Ubuntu devs, /don't/ use so much orange again in the GUI. Default themes are supposed to be more neutral. - caliform, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Yes, more glass. Wait, let's just drop the orange, and make it blue, and then, perhaps, call the visual style as a whole after something with water or air - Aqua? Or perhaps Aero? Yeah, that'll be a real good idea to set Ubuntu's look apart.
Seriously though, sarcasm aside, I find it enough Aqua and glossiness as it is. Design of OS'es isn't polarised between XP-candy and Aqua, it's just that a lot of designers cannot come up with something different. Too bad. I don't like what I see here. - Chandon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You should submit a bug to the Ubuntu bug tracker for that, because they generally seem to care about that sort of problem.
In the meantime, do alternate office apps like Abiword or KOffice work better? - Chandon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Dapper Drake is the no-nonsense enterprise-grade super-stable release. Edgy Eft is the counterpoint to that, where the goal is to put in a bunch of shiny new graphical "features".
If you don't care about pretty pictures, then I can assure you that you won't need a new version of Ubuntu only six months after the release of Dapper anyway. - eastshores, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Man.. you know one thing that Microsoft and Apple do, is spend a lot of time generating various design concepts and having tests that allow feedback to drive the look. I am really saddened to see that there aren't more professional graphic artists involved in the themes in such a way that they can actually act as lead designers and perhaps through committee, provide style guides for artwork created.
I am not hating, but the design in these samples are not great on several levels. Too much heavy use of effects. Effects should be subtle. Stacking bevels, on top of glows, on top of shadows, creates too many dimensions which end up taking away from what could otherwise be a dramatic design. What you are seeing in vista is an evolution of what apple started.
There is a video of the MS lead designer discussing the themes they studied, including some of the current leader in the OS design space Apple, they studied the look and feel of luxury by investigating what people feel is sexy design. The likes of BMW, Mercedes, etc. The gloss look, and satin finishes are universal to what people percieve as "luxury" in design, or simply very high quality. These themes are largely from the manufacturing industry. - Flooq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It'll only ever be a default, it not like any of the desktop enviroments make it hard to change their themes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18true but the current brown thing is really ugly.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14No no no, you're not going to find your target audience here. Digg is home to many IT and technology professionals that couldn't be less interested in your low-lifeish websites.
Try Fark instead. - xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Indeed
Looks like a gallery of do-it-yourself-in-two-steps Photoshop tutorials. - Neorio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10They could start by helping open office out by making sure that it works with fonts other than English. Try installing Ubuntu 6.06 in Japanese, and try opening Open office.... notice how the menus clash with the fonts all over the place to make OOo unusable in anything other than a latin font.
- kubudubudubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7the Eft in 'Ubuntu Edgy Eft', which is the name of it,,, is some sort of a salamander
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I just installed compiz-quinn on Ubuntu. That along with compizthemer is an awesome piece of software. I showed off my new setup to a few friends and they were practically drooling. I can't wait for XGL/Compiz to be included in the standard reps so they will support more systems. For software that's in Beta (Alpha some portions), its mighty impressive.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13the kubuntu stuff looks especially clean and crisp and doesn't violate my eyes :)
not that ubuntu has ever violated my eyes.... but i do understand when my friends enquire as to the 'brown' everywhere (though they do things with brown i ever thought possible) - PrimoTurbo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15They need to hire people to do a better job with the color theme and the various wall papers/splash screens because it looks pretty horrible at the moment and the newer stuff isn’t any better imo. Some of it looks like ugly overused bevel.
What’s with the nasty *****/bean wallpaper. - weidel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Allright, people, as one of the people on the ubuntu art-team I'd like to clear up some things: These are not ready-for-edgy-artwork, we're in a proposal phase where everyone is encouraged just to send lots and lots of different, unpolished and temporary ideas in. That's what this is, a bunch of widely varied tests. Don't take any of those seriously as in "that's how it will look".
It's even a tad unneccessary for this to be even digged at this moment. Come back when we're in the actual production phase and have hammered out what it really will look like.
As of this moment, the general guidelines set forth by Mark for Edgy is that, yes, it will continue with a glossy look. And yes, it will still be earth tones, but might steer away from the overly orange. Ubuntu is, after all, about being a more friendly, natural OS, and needs to have its own unique look. And the brown earthy tones are distinctly ubuntu.
The overgloss, plugin effects and bevels and all others are there because we're hammering out quick drafts, and shortcuts are encouraged. Once we have a direction set, whatever we decide on will be done as sleek and polished as possible. Feel free to give us creative feedback and ideas, it's after all open for everyone to help out with. - kubudubudubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You have to admit that the kubuntu transparent login screen looks sweet! :P
But the really really glassy xubuntu logo is just too much. - FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Wow. It needs some work...
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Ubuntu should hold a contest for new default schemes and colors. I think I get why they chose orange/brown -- because it's supposed to represent "humanity" or somesuch one-world feel-goodyness. But who wants their OS looking like a medley of human skin tones? :p
The Ubuntu logo is cool. But everything else must be redone. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7specially the shade of brown they are using. it's really really ugly.
who the hell came up with it? - mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks like there might finally be a shot at getting rid of the default brown theme. Most stuff there was brown, though, and I hope everything else presented was not strictly XFCE/KDE.
- VVho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I am on the art-team, and, well, I gotta give you credit for the Worthers analogy :)
To be fair, as Weidel said - everything we are doing at the moment is very quick design ideas, gradients, colours, everyhting happens fast and without much subtlety. You may note that some of the more recent stuff has been less glassy
A good example of the level of gloss that is likely to be final is the Human icon theme and the Dapper login splash. - Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I was trying to capture the words to describe the essence of the style. "*****/bean" portrays it perfectly, thank you.
Ubuntu is on my primary desktop and I enjoy it as much as most. As much as the greatness of the distro will cloud a fanboy's judgement, let's face it, the default theme is atrocious. - DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Bah! I enjoyed the Earthtones, personally.
Mmm... earthy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9http://www.duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_Edgy_artwork_progress_Great_eye_candy_on_the_way/
- luchid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They really, really, reallly should get rid of the brown...
- pongx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I wish they wouldn't go with the "mee too" approach to these designs. Half of them suck outright and the rest are almost all copies of a Mac or Windows background theme. About two are original and cool-looking and those are the stylish ones with the salamander looking creature on there. Ubuntu has nothing to do with salamanders, in fact it has more to do with furrry warthogs and badgers, so their mascot should be furry.
If nothing else this proves that once again Linux is the mee too of operating systems. Nothing new there, just something repackaged at 75% of the value and 0% of the price. In the end with Linux you get what you pay for and these designs are obviously "free" designs. - Sharkee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Ubuntu is Zimbabwen for "Auto Digg" right?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7a heads-up for kubuntu also having a much sleeker login, the standard ubuntu login page was absolutely neanderthal in comparison
- somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like the default theme- I much prefer the earthy, human feel to the corporate image of Windows or the "too cool for school" Apple look. But then again, I am the kind of person who will then spend way more time than I should redesigning my own desktop.
But the "Blubuntu" alternative scheme looks very nice too. I predict a hundred and one "How to get started with Edgy Eft" tutorials with "step one- replace boring default theme with Blubuntu." (Just before "step two- install a load of non-free codecs and applications.") - KAMiKAZOW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, "we" can. Open lsplash.png in a text editor and you'll see the string SoftwareAdobe ImageReady. There's your answer.
- aplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Looks pretty smooth to me.
- VVho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am also a member of the Artwork team, (and I agree with all Weidel said - he has covered explanation of why the art is like this)
I have some links for you to move this on
I think it is important for everyone to realize how early this stuff all is.
Officially we are still in the 'the rougher the better' stage! It is unlikely Edgy will look like our current mock ups, there will be much more polish!
Mark Shuttleworth has suggested we use the Dapper Gnome Splash as our baseline for style and quality - so almost all ideas are moving towards this now. Love it or hate it, the orange/brown combination is distinctly Ubuntu, and makes the OS instantly recognizable.
Our plan for the Edgy artwork can be found here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan
We are currently in the Propose phase
A number of other themes are being developed for Edgy by some 'Theme Teams' - the information about these can be found here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan/ThemeTeams
There will be a decision at a later date about which, if any, of these themes will be included in Edgy. As far as I know it will depend on quality and (importantly) space on the CD.
If you want artwork officially included in Edgy then I believe the best way to go about it is to be part of the art team, or to contact someone who is.
If you think you like the idea of being on the art team then look here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Team/GetInvolved
If you like your Ubuntu blue then look at this
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Blubuntu
It is the blue theme I am developing as a theme team leader. I am looking for contributions now!
I hope that helps clear things up and gives out some more real information - tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@teqman
"Ubuntu is on track to look like a saliva-coated Werther's."
Quite possibly the most amazing/horrible prediction I've ever read. - plueken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is why I like the original Clearlooks theme. Windows can go with glass, OS X can go with brushed steel, and GNOME can go with... well, whatever the hell Clearlooks is. But it sure is both unique and incredibly attractive (and simplistic at the same time).
- jrsims, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to ask - can we confirm if Gimp or Photoshop was used to create these?
- Snakey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you look closely at the first 2 wallpapers, these are blue (well, most of it), the disappointment (for you) is in the filename: it contains _k_ this will most probably mean it's for KDE.
But nevertheless, for me, I think that Brown theme is fine for me, I like it, with that orange. But that's my opinion/taste. You can easily change that if you want.
I've read in other comments on an older article, it was based on the Lion King (Mark S. is an african) and that this the reason is that everything is brown-alike as default. Even the names, Warthog, Hedgehog, Badger, Dapper, Eft,... are characters from the cartoon (however, I don't really know allot about animals, but I've never heard about them :p )
Can't wait for Plumbing Pumbaa, lol
EDIT: pumbaa is warthog :| - coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hm. I agree that there's not much to inspire here. They might do better to ditch the whole glass/bevel/shadow thing as it simply detracts from the strength of their logo. It's all very amateurish - reminds me of early 80s DTP using all the fonts. I think they could go for a more cartooon/posterised look with drop shadows in order to provide a clean look that's completely different from Aqua/Aero - take a look at the styling of Ableton's 'Live' audio software for an interesting take on that http://www.ableton.com/pages/live_6/whats_new/home.
On that whole page the blue kubuntu logo is by far the most readable, and the kubuntu login screen the prettiest (though why on earth do they put id and password on separate pages? Doesn't everyone have some kind of muscle memory for tabbing between the two??). - jameshales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really don't like the orange. Clashing colours make me scream. The worst bit of the Dapper Drake theme was the splashscreen for GNOME, but it says on the site that the splashscreen is actually the "target inspiration anchor".
Despite that, some of the mock-ups look good, although again I hate the orange. I'd really like it if the theme were more like that light-brown login screen. - ordminute, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ubuntu could really innovate here if it went with a F L A T but nicely XGL shadowed theme that works intelligently with the XGL transparency. Part of the problem here is that they aren't developing with XGL directly in mind, so all this bulging drag-and-drop bevel is going to look absurd and convulving coupled with XGL. Let XGL provide the '3D'ness' in itself and get away from all this fake over-compensation. Ubuntu should stop directly competing with Aero and Aqua and diversify. You can do a huge amount with color to define window elements. Use it for that not fake 3D bevels!
Go Clean and light!!!! Let the other players wear feather bowers and jewelled ear-rings. Users don't want to be shouted at by intensely rich colors and faked 3D gloss, they want to feel that they really like working on that computer. A desktop can look sexy and still be easy and light on the eye after many hours of using it. I don't want to be noticing my desktop all the time and these screenshots look like they are asking for my attention far too much.
Disclaimer: I love Ubuntu! I can't get enough of it - I gladly dropped OSX for it! - byte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, according to Wikipedia an 'eft' is a young newt
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eft - ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They need to change their default colours if you ask me. Blue is a much nicer colour and doesn't make my eyes bleed half as much as the existing scheme. Also why are they going down the shiney plastic looking glowstick route with of their designs, not exactly original.
- monkeyboy8686, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2B-E-A-utiful!
- eastshores, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And that matters why?
- kubudubudubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I really dont like the brown theme, they should got with a more orange-lightbrowny themes, it will add more contrast to it, and look nicer imo.
- Kailash.Nadh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Personally, I dont like the orange/brown color scheme. And also, the new schemes have nothing special, just wild colors that dont even go with each other.
- imyayo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Can't help but being blunt about it: nothing overly exciting.
- pglyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm wasn't a big fan of the brown/orange color scheme at first but it did kind of grow on me. Ubuntu has a bunch of themes you can use so you can get away from their stock colors and icons. Here's a screenshot of my Ubuntu desktop http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterglyman/189116049/
- VVho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wicked - well, why not digg Blubuntu then - I want submissions:
More ideas-->better theme-->more chance of inclusion

may be the thing for you :)
Caramel is agreat default colour - it makes Ubuntu instantly recognisable, is more 'warm' and human than a cold brown -
