- madcap, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19Ubuntu Super Powers Activate!
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The 3D window stacking effect is a glorified alt+tab. It's interesting for about 0.3 seconds, if even that. I would hope that this feature is not the influencing factor for anyone considering purchasing Vista.
- ryanakca, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yeah... We emailed CTV Toronto, CTV National, Global News, Toronto Sun, Toronto Star, CBC Toronto, Globe and Mail, CityTV, and we're hoping CTV will show up.
I'll be recording it with my handy dandy DVD burner, and I'll try to get it up on YouTube and Planet Ubuntu by tommorow night at the latest if we do see it on the news. - halik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9What's the point of this again?
I'm all for linux and all, but this "educating" people seems kind of dumb. Even ubuntu isn't ready to be a consumer OS, so this vista parallel will only create a mass of people that get the wrong idea about linux when half of their stuff isnt working. - Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sadly from what i've heard, it can be..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm across from Dundas Square right now and was just talking to be linux people before the police came and kicked them and their huge blow up penguin out of the area. Oh well. I was talking to some of the Microsoft reps and they said they expect to be flash mobbed by Apple enthusiasts as well. Good times.
- eggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can WordPress EVER survive the front page? I don't think I've ever seen one manage it... Surly their servers can't suck that bad, can they?
- ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How are 10 guys on the street giving out CDs anything like a people preaching hellfire and brimstone on the street? I've never heard any Linux user ever say "You're going to hell if you use Vista!" or "Linux Saves" or "Convert to Linux or Die!". I have heard people say "You'll get viruses if you use Windows" or "Linux is better on servers" or "Use Linux, since built in DRM sucks." Huge difference.
Also, your comments are offensive to Christians. Play nice next time, ok, and maybe Bill will allow you to watch HDTV on Vista. - millette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Isn't it at least 5% of the desktop market already?
- JoeMittler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'd so go, but I have class until 6 dammit.. I'm in the area too!
- ratbear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you don't like closed software, you don't have to use it. This over-the-top hyberbole being espoused by the FSF community about proprietary software oppressing it's users is totally misguided and usually has the opposite intended affect.
"The only reason I don't quit smoking is because I fear that if I did, I'd become one of you."
-Bill Hicks on annoying self righteous non-smokers - tonyyarusso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just got off the phone with Dave. The police asked them to take down the penguin, since they thought it was a safety issue to have it blocking things, so that request has been complied with. Tux is no longer up, but the group IS definitely still on site and carrying on without the inflatable penguin. So things are still going well, you'll just have to look a little bit harder for them.
- latova, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I got class and work to go to today... as much as I'd want to come for this. Make sure you do a follow up and post highlights ;)
- ronaldst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's fundamentalism in process.
- rouben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tell that to Microsoft when you try to reinstall Vista more than 2 times, because you happened to upgrade your computer, or it simply kicked the bucked more than 2 times... which happens to everyone.
- KungFuJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's wrong with spreading information about free alternatives to expensive crapware?
- dsenior, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I swung by the ice house today after class..
Sweet looks, hot drinks were a nice touch, most of the people tending to the house were sort of ignorant on licenses and what version to get. You got general PR people basically..
The ads in the subway and around the eaton centre must have cost a pretty penny - KungFuJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no it's not, they're not going to people's houses
- techknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I went after work.
They gave me a pamphlet and an Ubuntu CD and told me about how it wouldn't refuse to activate if I had pirated software. I thought that was kind of a strange way to promote Linux, but I guess there are a lot of users with pirated copies of Windows. The person I spoke to was pretty enthusiastic about Linux and explained how Ubuntu came with lots free applications, including an office suite.
Then when I went inside the Microsoft Digital Ice House the guy doing the Media Center demo told me it would play all video formats, not just Windows Media format! (Which isn't true by a longshot, naturally.)
I took some pictures with my phone, including two of the Ubuntu Canada people:

- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I have to say that this ice thing Microsoft did for Vista is pretty nice.
But in ALL the print / TV ads I see for it, I only feel I should get Vista because there's this 3D stacking windows effect. It is the ONLY they seem to be pushing about that new Windows
So yeah, bring on the Tux at Dundas Square! Nice spot actually! - daylightfades, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was one of the people down there, and I just wanted to say something. (I simply know someone in Ubuntu Toronto and I'm not normally present at events, I just wanted to check it out.)
For those who feel we're "***** stupid" or forcing our opinions on people "like Christians" (ugh...please), I think you're missing the point (at least, this is how I see it, I don't pretend to speak for anyone else).
Every software company who sells to the public does some sort of advertising. This is where open source suffers: because most open source projects don't have cash flowing in like the ancient rivers of Babylon, they simply cannot afford to advertise. If we plan to compete with products like Windows, we're going to have to do some promotion. I don't understand how this has anything to do with religion or forcing our ideas on others. We're just trying to spread something that we believe in. If merely presenting your idea or belief constitutes forcing it on someone else, everyone who posted in this thread is guilty.
I was not there slandering Microsoft, simply promoting an alternative. Many people use Windows because it came with their PC, and they don't even know that there is a second choice; they just accept that PCs use Windows like Macs use MacOS. If people want to use Windows, they are free to do so and I respect their choice.
Please understand that there is no funny business going on. Nobody is trying to screw anyone. This is just a little promotion event. That's all. - timsco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Sadly, they're going to get turfed out. No doubt that m$ paid some sweet cash to get there and will not be allowed to be shown up by a 15 foot tux.
Despite the 'public square' feeling of Dundas Square, it's anything but. It's a profit centre for the city. - AROZ, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1It's a public square and postmodern marketplace.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"isn't that kind of the same the thing they endure every time the hand-upgrade a windows pc?
win2k to winXP, scanners stop working, printers simply quit, cause there's no driver.
Winxp to vista, it all gets slower, drm isn't working cause the drivers aren't there, and are unstable, so movie playback (plays for sure) breaks.
Scanners stop working again, digital camera downloads as a twain device will probably die too, same with older printers etc. Most people will innstall Vista and then get a cold shower, there's now WOW for you, since you're videocard sucks, and your low on ram, the aero is disabled. Oh, and try to score a readyboost hdd, cause this one is slooooowww."
Nice exaggeration. But anything that breaks with a new Windows upgrade are fix with new drivers supplied by your hardware vendor, which almost always happens. When it breaks because you switch to linux, there is a better than 90% chance it will be dead for good or working crippled because their is no driver available for it. The whole nonsense about Vista running too slow is based on the idea that you will go and by a version of it that is not appropriate for your PC. if you have a low end machine, dont get the version for high end ones. - tonyyarusso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some more pics here: http://picasaweb.google.com/Myles.Braithwaite/OperationColdComfort
- tonyyarusso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Went down for a bit, but I moved it to static HTML and closed down some stuff. You should be able to access the post again! Sorry about that...um, Digg is massive.
- chamberlain2007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I'd like to say that I wasn't able to get to Toronto to see the event, but I'm a huge fan of Linux/Ubuntu. I really am shocked (well not really) that so many people think that the event wasn't successful. Even if they didn't pass out any CD's, and nobody installed Ubuntu, it would still have been successful. The biggest thing that the Linux community needs is recognition. Most people that I talk to about Linux are completely clueless that there is an alternative to Windows. So please, get your facts straight, and just let people do there thing.
- tonyyarusso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A bit more here: http://dave-sullivan.com/entries/5/
Could be more to follow. - tonyyarusso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw, the group is back there again today, started at 3 PM.
- timsco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gee--didn't see that one coming (see my comment above)
I would love to see them getting that 15 foot tux on the subway at rush hour... I hope that they got some non-tech press at the very least. - rouben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is there a website for all this? I can't wait to see photos! So far I've only seen a fairly small FLICKR gallery (thanks for those photos, by the way), from a cell phone, but I was hoping to see more than that. I may even make it there tonight, but probably not...
- rexbron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I will definately post any photos I take.
- moulinneuf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Snow Ball fight !!! - tonyyarusso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Moved back to WordPress for the time being - I will be watching traffic closely to see if I need to go back to HTML.
- Pixellore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Awesome.... I'll be there taking photos....
- Wasyu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Right now more stuff is going to work under ubuntu then vista at the moment.
I was able to install it on my laptop a newer AMD 64 based system that is only 3months old and everything worked no command line stuff and no editing a single line in a single file in /etc .
Even the radeon X1600 worked after performing a gui install for the ATI drivers something vista cannot claim yet. - KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@darkyoshi Heh, you got me to think that someone on digg should submit a static wordpress error page but make a really interesting headline and description, just to see if it would actually get lots of diggs anyway.
- Sonic_Molson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wordpress can ruin any article, no matter how good the article is.
- ryanakca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The server whent down, but it should be back up in a couple of minutes
Gotta love home servers on home connections :) - millette, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Cached it: http://laptop.waglo.com.nyud.net:8080/~millette/toronto-ubuntu-vista.html
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8And when these consumers get home, delete their current OS, and find that most of their stuff no longer works, what exactly is this Ubuntu chapter going to do for these people?
Because a can guarantee you that this is EXACTLY what's going to happen.
This whole stunt could prove more damaging to Ubuntu than helpful. And it just reeks as juvenile. - IceZZ, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6To let everyone know how fat and ugly penguins are, and what you'll look like after using Linux.
- DuctTape31, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1GAH!!! I Wish i could have made it tonight, that would be an awesome photo op!!
- jutendouji, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm sure they could get away by doing the penguin thing across the street, in front of the Sears entrance at Eaton Centre... I mean, that's public for sure, the amount of street dancers in that corner during the summer is baffling, heh.
But also, I wonder how many people are gonna show up considering there are days with -15 Celcius with ease these days over there... - wikityler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just added another mirror if it's needed. Located at http://utihr.tyrivard.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2there is a flash mob rave party happening at this event too!!
6pm sharp - Wasyu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0As much hacking as it'll take to make vista even bearable why not go to linux tweaking wine and opengl just might be less work now.
The whole drm issue and broken drivers in vista have me giving up on microsoft
BTW I think it good for someone to tell people there is an alternative to microsoft's increasingly anti consumer practices. - tonyyarusso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Still holding strong for the time being. If you couldn't access earlier, you might try back now, or the mirror posted earlier - http://laptop.waglo.com.nyud.net:8080/~millette/toronto-ubuntu-vista.html
