- nosg, on 10/29/2009, -3/+65Maybe it's just me, but Flash is from Adobe, right? So, Ubuntu should fix it?
Yeah Ubuntu! Fix my printer! - sigmaman2, on 10/29/2009, -2/+56DON'T DOWNLOAD DIRECTLY!
You're sharing that single pipe with hundreds of others. Use the torrent!. After all, the torrent will actually be faster the more people that use it. - Warom, on 10/29/2009, -2/+44First Windows 7, then Ubuntu. I feel like a little kid at christmas :D

The Mirrors are slammed today so download the release by torrent. It is so much faster.
My top download speed using the torrent was > 4/MBs. - hydrodev, on 10/29/2009, -1/+35Looks like he should have put a "-" before 910
- UselessTrivia, on 10/29/2009, -5/+36I don't see how they'll ever top Jaunty Jackalope as release code name. Karmic Koala doesn't even come close. The word Jaunty simply has too much power.
- runeandre, on 10/29/2009, -1/+31Agreed! Use torrents :-D
- mickstephenson, on 10/29/2009, -0/+27"Can we have a nicer theme?"
This edition has the biggest change to the theme of any release, it has a brand new icon theme which is a vast improvement, the gtk theme is a bit better, and it ships with a fine set of wallpapers.
"Can themes be more configurable?"
They are already configurable, thats why sites like gnome-look exist, open up your text editor.
"Can we have a polished interface?"
That's the idea, the future of gnome is gnome-shell, try "sudo apt-get install gnome-shell" then "gnome-shell --replace" to see what direction they are going in.
"Can I not see any kernel/console/terminal messages on boot-up/shut-down (unless I ask for it?)"
Errrm, thats exactly what they have done in this release.
"Can my machine actually boot up in 10 seconds or less?"
I dunno can it? does windows boot in 10 seconds or less for you?
"Can multi-touch be supported in both hardware and software?"
I hardly think this is a priority since it's primarily a desktop/laptop OS, do you even have a touch enabled laptop?
"Can I pan and zoom in/out with multi-touch?"
see above
"Can the File Browser be slicker than Finder, and have column view?"
View > List view
"Can encryption now be easily integrated?"
Yes this is a major feature of karmic.
"Can running applications finally be distinguished from their window instances?"
See gnome-shell
"Can Docky finally be mature enough to be the default?"
Docky will never be default, nor should it, the dock doesn't properly integrate into a desktop workflow, it's a personal choice you make to run it. again see gnome-shell.
"Can I go to the corner store and actually see Ubuntu machines for sale?"
How is this a constructive criticism? it will be in corner stores when it gets market share, it will get market share when it is deemed suitable for the public based on it's featureset.
Your criticisms are shallow and ill informed, there is plenty to be criticised about ubuntu.
Primarily my major criticism is the lie that the package manager provides you with up to date packages, and a simple "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" will get you all the latest software, this is complete ***** ubuntu only updates software at the time of upgrade, until then you won't ever get your software updated, only security patches and bugfixes. On windows when firefox comes out you update it at your leisure, on ubuntu you have to add repos or ppas or go to getdeb, it's hardly the hassle free system people often tout it to be.
A perfect distro for me would update user applications whenever there is a stable release of that application, not when there is a stable release of the distro. - paulsmith288, on 10/29/2009, -0/+27 here is a +1 for all on one page and no spam

- LinuxLars, on 10/29/2009, -3/+26I've been using Koala on my Lenovo X61s and it's been great (I've been running Ubuntu on this machine - which has become my primary computer - since I purchased it).
My only issue is with the integrated Intel graphics cards (no Desktop Effects). - dirtyhipster, on 10/29/2009, -12/+35This truly will be the year of the linux desktop!

- sigmaman2, on 10/29/2009, -2/+22My DVR runs on Linux too. Linux should fix my cable signal so that my recordings don't get scrambled.
- basotl, on 10/29/2009, -1/+20I've been using the 64bit release candidate on my newest desktop build. It has several small but nice improvements all around.
Core 2 Quad Core, 4GBs of RAM, MSI Motherboard, Geforce 7200 GPU (hope to upgrade gpu)
I've been running City of Heroes via Cedega at max and other fun games such as Quake live. Which all run well.
I'm still getting used to Empathy and am undecided of it's choice over Pidgin. I think the Ubuntu Software Center looks good and is nice for new users. - DBeta, on 10/29/2009, -2/+20Full screen flash does work. On my netbook with 9.10, full screen actually normally works much better than not. I haven't figured out what it is exactly, but something about fullscreening the flash gives it a huge performance boost. Best I can tell it's the act of removing it from being "embedded" to standalone.
- FairDinkumMate, on 10/29/2009, -0/+17@subliminalurge - Please explain why you think it's a fault of Linux that Logitech designed their hardware & drivers with only Windows in mind? It's not as though the kernel doesn't have the ability to recognize a keyboard, simply that Logitech decided not to use it.
- qthews, on 10/29/2009, -2/+19I say wait for Mint 8. You get everything from 9.10 plus all the minty goodness you've come to expect.
- DiggerLater, on 10/29/2009, -5/+22This makes me happy. Ubuntu FTW!
- pissshivers, on 10/29/2009, -1/+17Linux is finally getting grandmother-friendly. I've installed the beta on my grandmother's web browsing computer 2 weeks ago, and she hasn't asked me to fix it yet.
- TrevorBradley, on 10/29/2009, -1/+17The thing I've loved about Ubuntu since I switched over... Fresh installs have never felt that necessary. The upgrade seems to do the trick!

- Icetype, on 10/29/2009, -0/+15The RC uses the same repos, so once you update you're fine.
Also, FYI for everybody: Around release dates the main servers are pwned, but you can go to Synaptic Package Manager and do the find best mirror thing and you'll be golden. - techdever, on 10/29/2009, -1/+16Mint Gloryhole?
- phpchris, on 10/29/2009, -0/+14I imagine they've separated the web server from the servers the downloads are on.

- DiggerLater, on 10/29/2009, -0/+14This should be a seperate digg submission! Great article, thx.
- pyrates, on 10/29/2009, -1/+14Not sure why you're getting voted down. Users should be told this. Shame on those who vote you down just because you're making linux look bad through legitimate means.

- paulsmith288, on 10/29/2009, -0/+12all previous ubuntus from the last 2 years have worked with my apple bluetooth keyboard out of the box. Perhaps its just that Logitech model
- sigmaman2, on 10/29/2009, -0/+12If direct downloading is taking you 12 hours, then yeah, wait till you get home. If you have a decent Cable Modem connection, it should only take about half an hour.
- Frostek, on 10/29/2009, -3/+15That's a paper cut if ever I've heard one.
Surely Adobe could fix this without too much bother? - waspbr, on 10/29/2009, -0/+11you dont need to re-install just update your current version in System>Administration> update manager
- Mockylock, on 10/29/2009, -0/+11This has been the Decade of Linux, if all the "year of linux" articles are true.
