- ItWasOnlyAJoke, on 10/10/2009, -34/+355Yo Suse, I'm really happy fo you, Ima let you finish, but Ubuntu have one of da fastest boots of all time! OF ALL TIME!
- warp99, on 10/10/2009, -17/+241For everyone that complains consistently about the brown and orange colors doesn't understand that outside of western cultures earth tones are seen in a more positive light then colors such as blue and gray. Ubuntu it appears decided to target the remaining 2/3 of the world's population that is currently ignored, so the slogan "Linux for Human Beings" actual means something.
- LinuxSmooth, on 10/10/2009, -1/+154Well to be fair, if an upgrade doesn't make it the best release ever, it wouldn't really be an upgrade.
- jekkin, on 10/10/2009, -14/+141One entire game?!
- threeblackdots, on 10/10/2009, -11/+127A Real Game for Linux:
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com - salvadorwii, on 10/10/2009, -5/+91This is the best Linux distro ever!
(Please remember me to say the same thing in 6 months) - Taiyoryu, on 10/10/2009, -0/+74Actually those earth tones are human skin tones. Hence the default theme is called Human further reinforcing the slogan.
- umren, on 10/10/2009, -10/+78and this is sparta
- Kirsle, on 10/10/2009, -1/+65Mostly because VLC supports many proprietary codecs and file formats, and for Ubuntu to ship it out-of-the-box, Canonical would need to pay royalties to all the patent holders that control all those codecs and file formats.
- inactive, on 10/10/2009, -2/+64Couldn't remember the word remind?
- runner108, on 10/10/2009, -6/+63Every release I install linux to see all the new features. I'm not a linux user at default though. My impressions are is that its ALMOST there.. still a few things need to be cleaned up.. The new App installer will go a long way.
Two things I've found that whenever I install an ubuntu system I want to install the desktop cube and I want to change the theme. I find compiz advanced configuration fairly confusing. I also find that having different theme managers ends up being confusing as I'm not sure at times what I'm downloading.. why at times only title bars change and not windows, etc. Emerald seems to do more but never seems to apply correctly and even seems to break some windows elements like the title bar, etc. Then I have to go into terminal to do something I read like replace --emerald but then it doesn't load when I reboot..
I really like ubuntu and its almost there! I never have to think about these things on windows or mac though.. its getting close but not perfect. - scuba7183, on 10/10/2009, -13/+70This is Ubuntu.
- Cerebron, on 10/10/2009, -0/+56Unreal Tournament and Quake have both worked in Linux for a while now.
- druke, on 10/10/2009, -4/+55dugg, not for truth, or b/c I agree with you; but rather because you made me giggle just a little bit.
- druke, on 10/10/2009, -0/+41every unreal before ut:3, every id software game... eve to a dismal extent. Quite a few independent games.
There are more than people give credit to. - pissshivers, on 10/10/2009, -5/+45Why doesn't Ubuntu come with VLC? It's the best multi purpose media player on every desktop platform.
- JediPilot, on 10/10/2009, -8/+47Who would complain about something you can change easily?
- havocjaw, on 10/10/2009, -6/+43I see what you did there... you killed his joke. Nice.
- druke, on 10/10/2009, -6/+41it's more like, wtf is system restore? win-nub...
real linux users have /home on a different partition and thus are system independent. - druke, on 10/10/2009, -2/+36as correct as you are, those apps are not designed for linux in production, while teh other mentioned games are. The difference is rather important.
Honestly making this argument just leaves you vulnerable to more attacks than it resolves by making it in the first place. - druke, on 10/10/2009, -1/+33obviously... the only better review would be an "ubuntu is perfect" review. That, however is being saved for the year of linux.
- beautifulbeast, on 10/10/2009, -1/+32I can't believe a commercial game is being developed to be compatible with Linux. I'll keep an eye on it and thanks for the shout out.
- gl77, on 10/10/2009, -3/+34when people say that, they are telling the truth, it IS the best distro ever up to that point. Ubuntu just keeps getting better and better, no doubt about that.
- syowr, on 10/10/2009, -4/+33Thats it? The theme is your big gripe?
You do know you can change it yourself right? and there is this thing called the interwebs where you download themes other people have made and use them on your machine... you should hit the library and get a book so you can learn more about it. - inactive, on 10/10/2009, -15/+43You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
- Nephersir7, on 10/10/2009, -4/+31This isnt OS X. You are free to change the theme.
- JDLade, on 10/11/2009, -1/+26[X] Idea
[ ] execution - iskin, on 10/10/2009, -1/+26I haven't tried Oblivion, BF3, or Fallout 3, but TF2, and HL2 have very mixed results in Wine. Even the Steam client is buggy.
I prefer using a Linux desktop when I'm working, but if you are going to use a PC for gaming Windows is still very necessary. - La9os, on 10/10/2009, -1/+26Oh man, that sucks. You should totally ask for a refund... oh wait...
- tk0680, on 10/10/2009, -1/+25I'm trying to remember the last time I needed a System Restore function on Ubuntu ... Even if I did, see Druke's comment.
- RupeThereItIs, on 10/10/2009, -1/+24Simple & offensive, yet severely lacking in detail. I give it a 2. Remember a good troll should convince someone that your serious enough to be argued with, yet possibly insane.
- tk0680, on 10/10/2009, -1/+23Here's hoping that the final release doesn't have errors that the beta suffers from? Unique thinking there, billy.
- endor7, on 10/10/2009, -6/+27Best Karmic review, ever!
- BionicApple, on 10/11/2009, -1/+22Holy ***** *****.
A talking panda! - Waisybabu, on 10/10/2009, -1/+21It's perfect for me. And that's all that matters.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 10/10/2009, -0/+20I'd really like Songbird included as the default media player. If you think about it, most new users are coming from iTunes and Songbird is probably the closest alternative. Since it has extension support like Firefox, you can add just about any functionality you want and customize it. It supports iPods and other devices . I use it all the time and don't care for the bland interfaces of other Linux media players.
- cmost, on 10/10/2009, -5/+24Every time a new release of Ubuntu drops, the tech sites all declare "this is the best Ubuntu ever...." Then, following the release, they talk about how it's almost perfect except for...<insert laundry list of complaints.> Don't get me wrong, I've used Ubuntu for many years off and on. I've been beta testing the new 9.10 release since the early days and the absolute truth of the matter is that it's an incremental improvement, like usual. Nothing groundbreaking in Gnome 2.28; no unique features or applications not available in other distros (with the exception of Canonical's new "cloud" computing service Ubuntu One.) Really, the only new thing Ubuntu 9.10 has to offer is a faster boot and a pretty boot sequence. Ooooh, ahhhhh. Unfortunately the rest of the theme is another variation on the usual orange and brown. Blah! As usual, the hype machine is in full swing and users will eat it up the same as always.
- druke, on 10/10/2009, -2/+21more overhead than the other ones,
not as user friendly,
doesn't theme with gnome (it's qt),
people who want it know it's only an apt-get away. - canthraxp, on 10/10/2009, -1/+19Fun thing is that I watched the video, then scrolled to check for the "Blizzard" logo. Looks like an updated Warcraft (which is great).
I hope this guys really give blizzard a run for their money, as they've been sitting all day wasting time milking their cash cow (WoW) meanwhile they kick the release date of their other franchises (D3, S2). - hockeyfighter09, on 10/10/2009, -3/+21*swoosh*.......Did you even read the paragraph you replied to?
- BenSho, on 10/10/2009, -0/+17http://rorr.im/digg.com/linux_unix/ubuntu_9_10_alm ...
- RupeThereItIs, on 10/10/2009, -1/+17Almost perfect, I give it a 7. This is truly a quality troll, you can't tell if he's a serious fanboy, sarcastic ubuntu fan or high quality Troll. He's sure to pull some poor basted in to a fight though. Good show sir, good show indeed. Might I suggest a few 1's after the triple exclamation points next time ;-)
- Moralogic, on 10/10/2009, -1/+16Yeah, I think it is the fact that the non-Linux users don't understand that a system restore isn't even needed on an OS that is built correctly. That is like asking where Linux's registry or Linux's defrag.
- quantumstatejim, on 10/10/2009, -7/+22So to summarise your post you really like Linux but find it just doesn't match up to Windows because you get confused by all of the advanced configuration options for the UI.
But the huge gaping flaw in your otherwise reasonable argument is that these things simple are not possible in windows without installing funny third party software which could well mess up your system. So you have rejected Ubuntu on the basis that you find it hard to do something that Windows cannot do in it.
To use an analogy it is like trying two cars, one of which has replaceable seat covers and the other doesn't. You proceed to reject the one with replaceable seat covers because the process is just too damn hard and confusing. - KyleO, on 10/10/2009, -0/+15But how can the Linux developers go about making a game native for Linux ...if the game developers don't port the game to Linux natively? Those "it's the creators faults" or "it's proprietary" are valid arguments, because that's actually how it works.
- altgeeky1, on 10/10/2009, -0/+15Great for Intel video drivers.
I'd been SUFFERING through the 9.04 release due to the not-yet-ready Intel video drivers. I know there was a fix for that, but I didn't want to fuss around with the system, so I waited.
If you're in the same boat, upgrade NOW (unless it's a production system). Happy to say that Intel video acceleration is working again, nice and smooth. - TrueJournals, on 10/10/2009, -0/+15Wow you have this wrong...
1. apt-get is the primary way to install software, yes, but it is also command line, and therefore not "new user" friendly. So, GUI implementations were needed. However, apt-get (or dpkg), is the backend for all GUI software (on debian-based distributions like Ubuntu, at least).
2. Add/Remove has been... removed... In favor of the Ubuntu Software Center.
3. Synaptic is meant for more advanced users. It's hidden away in the "System > Administration" menu, under the scary title "Synaptic Package Manager". The Software Center, however, is located where Add/Remove used to be -- right in the applications menu.
4. You actually missed a piece of software -- gdebi. gdebi was a GUI tool to install downloaded debs. However, from my understanding, the Software Center aims to replace gdebi as well.
So, in 9.10, there are three tools:
1. apt-get -- For REALLY advanced users who are comfortable with the command line.
2. Synaptic -- For more advanced users who would like to play around a bit, or would like more control over how they view software.
3. Ubuntu Software Center -- For the average user who wants to install and remove software. - 3242130193, on 10/10/2009, -2/+17Just wait till they add Gnome 3.0 to it with 10.04. Things are gonna get nasty good.
- druke, on 10/10/2009, -1/+16there is a bit of ironic truth here...
- deltron0, on 10/10/2009, -4/+19sudo apt-get install pidgin
