- aywwts4, on 09/09/2008, -2/+74I'm still pissed about 8.04 Hungry Hippo.
- compacho, on 09/09/2008, -7/+55Should be called Jesse Jackson.
- ptFoe, on 09/09/2008, -23/+63stupid name
- straxxus, on 09/09/2008, -1/+41I just switched to Ubuntu. It feels strange to be completely free of MS software. I'm glad everything works on my Lenovo T61 so the fustration level is near 0. I look forward to the next version.
- powatom, on 09/09/2008, -0/+25And you just coined a third!
Ubuntu fanboy = Ubunut. - neasteflorin, on 09/09/2008, -2/+24I don't know where they get these names but they sure are interesting and quite funny.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -3/+24Yeah. Many voted for Horny *****.
- alphaterminus, on 09/09/2008, -11/+32You mean "***** AWESOME name"
- straxxus, on 09/09/2008, -1/+19As long as Ubuntu gets better with support and features, they can name it anything they want.
- fmorel90, on 09/09/2008, -1/+18"Ubuntu 9.04 will be like a Jackalope, he claims, because it will be lightning fast and will converge desktop and web technologies to create a hybrid software experience." - reminds of Snow Leopard...supposed to be optimization mostly
- BobCFC, on 09/09/2008, -0/+17From the article I get the impression he meant for smaller devices like netbooks etc. If they can optimise for the new mini dells and eeepc so they instant-on I'm all for it.
I agree my desktop boots up 3xfaster than vista.. also it doesn't spend the first ten minutes churning away in the backgound with various services like vista does after you have reached the desktop.... listen closely you can hear the HD clicking. - mohtasham, on 09/09/2008, -1/+18After each release of Ubunut, I learn two new English words.
- rockstar1o9, on 09/09/2008, -1/+18Kinky Kitten??
- jpwhitmore, on 09/09/2008, -1/+17lets just hope its not something like kuddly koala
- MicrosoftBob, on 09/09/2008, -0/+16Well, that would fit with the brown color scheme....
[ducks and covers] - arjie, on 09/09/2008, -1/+13That's three releases away. Do not fear, it will come ;)
- Vadi0, on 09/09/2008, -9/+21I think such focus on boot time is a waste of effort. I don't see it being too bad really.
Would be more useful if they lobbied for more hardware support from the manufacturers imho. - slugicide, on 09/09/2008, -1/+12Sounds like they're gunning straight for the netbook market. A lot of people should be very happy.
- Aitese, on 09/09/2008, -1/+11Code names...how many times...they are CODE NAMES.
It will officially be known as Ubuntu 9.04. Get over the code name already. - benplaut, on 09/09/2008, -0/+10Kick Ass-kangaroo.
Somebody had to do it... - nitr, on 09/09/2008, -8/+18Well there goes my prediction of it being called Masturbating Monkey
- Aitese, on 09/09/2008, -1/+10Remember when Chicago came out? Remember how it came with a Weezer video to show off it's multimedia capabilities? I was still running Janus at the time. Didn't move to Memphis until around the end of 2000...I'm a bit behind the times like that. Used Asteroid through university and as soon as I got my first job upgraded to Whistler. Haven't made the leap to Longhorn, don't think I ever will actually. Never used any of the "Big Cat" Os's too heavily. Might give them a try one day.
Get over the ***** code names people...who cares what it's called unofficially? - srg13, on 09/09/2008, -0/+8You know, they are capable of doing more than one thing at a time...
It's not like the only thing they are going to work on is boot time. - MicrosoftBob, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9Yes, it can be a bit 'disorienting' at first. But it is well worth the learning curve, imho.
Also,my ThinkPad has been getting along very well with Ubuntu as well. Much better driver support than XP. - BassJunkie, on 09/09/2008, -0/+8Kinky Kinkajou has a nice ring to it, just to steal idea's from the 2 comments above of course........
- cdigioia, on 09/09/2008, -2/+9na-ha...you said cum...
- 2Pharcyded, on 09/09/2008, -2/+9dugg just for the word jaunty.
and ubuntu=] - AzureRise, on 09/09/2008, -1/+8Yes.
- autologica, on 09/09/2008, -1/+8So? Nobody will call it 9.04 in the forums. It's always "Breezy", "Edgy", "Feisty" or "Hardy" or something like that.
How many people in casual conversation will refer to it as 9.04? The purpose of the ubuntu code names are to provide a certain moniker that is catchy enough so people can talk about it casually. I never say, "Hey! So do you like ubuntu 8.04 over 7.10? I wonder what 8.10 is going to have that's new and interesting."
Also, this isn't like a "code name" like "Longhorn" was for Vista. This thing -is- going to be called Jaunty Jackalope by people on a regular basis.
And a Jackalope? Come on. At least they were using -real- animals before .... and interestingly enough, African ones, which I always thought was pretty interesting and cool. - srg13, on 09/09/2008, -1/+7Yeah, I judge everything I use by its name as well - no need to actually look at features or anything at all.
Not that it is even its actual name - just a code name... - Aitese, on 09/09/2008, -1/+7Yes, yes it IS a codename like Longhorn! You just don't get it. If people CHOOSE to call it that, that's STILL not the official line:
http://www.ubuntu.com/
Find me the word Hardy, or Gutsy or Jaunty ANYWHERE on this site and I'll hand over my wallet. - mickstephenson, on 09/09/2008, -2/+8"A jackalope is lightning fast and converges desktop and web technologies to create a hybrid software experience." - The Oxford English Dictionary definition
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackalope Go vandalise NOW! - powatom, on 09/09/2008, -0/+6Are you ***** kidding me? Read a book.
- CrimsonBlur, on 09/09/2008, -1/+6Dude come on, Jaunty Jackalope is probably the most awesome software codename I have ever heard! It's so much fun to say. Kids are going to love it ;)
- mohtasham, on 09/09/2008, -1/+6lol
- cybr2K, on 09/09/2008, -1/+6"Fast as fast can be, you'll never catch me." - Jackalope from 90's "America's Funniest People" Show
- deconsecrator, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5Boot time and look-and-feel are not the biggest problems that I see. I wish they would work out the kinks on wireless networking and power management. This seems especially important now with the rise in cheap Linux laptops. It is disappointing to get 1-2 hours less battery time than Windows on average.
- Sornos, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5I would go with Vivacious Vixen myself.
- autologica, on 09/09/2008, -5/+9Ugh. I love Ubuntu, but I hate the names they come up with.
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Kinkajou...Ill put money on it
- leejarratt, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4I ***** love Ubuntu
- TehDoctor, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4I can't wait to see Ubuntu 11.10 : Pissed-off Penguin
- defenswens26, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4This might make me switch back from Fedora finally. I felt that Hardy Heron was far too pokey on my computer as it would lock up all the time just trying to browse the web. So hopefully they get it optimized right as I'd love to switch back since it was the first distro I really played around with.
- lukemh, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3hahahaha
- straxxus, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Got it.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3 yes,welcome to Linux.
I use Cosmosis Linux and have been Microsoft free for almost four years.
I think,as time passes you will come to really enjoy Linus and all it offers. - mrBitch, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3@ straxxus RE: " I just switched to Ubuntu. I really hope your learning experiences are pleasant, and that you get back that sense of "fun" you had all those years back when you first started on this road. I know I did, oh and WELCOME! - mrBitch, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3RE: " Vista's boot time churning is likely due to SuperFetch. "
Nope, XP does it as well, and XP doesn't have "super fetch". I always thought the reason behind it was to "fake" a faster "boot to desktop" experience when the OS is still not really ready to do any work.
Anyone else play that game? The game where you "wait another minute until the mouse icon stops flicking between arrow and pulsing hoop" -- it's fun! - inactive, on 09/09/2008, -5/+8Jaunty Jackalope?? Boy, I tell ya, I sure like me them Ubuntu names.
