- darkchild, on 11/12/2008, -0/+87I think their efforts are very noble. The only sad thing is that year after year mockups are designed for new Ubuntu releases, but then the default theme seems to never change.
- martalli, on 11/12/2008, -2/+40I loved the wood panel theme. I wish they would adopt that one.
- SDL486, on 11/12/2008, -1/+39Wow, already? Intrepid Ibex came out 11 days ago.
- amfantasy, on 11/12/2008, -2/+25Why do we keep doing this, none of these mock-ups get used. We always end up with a nasty brown theme, maybe the graphic designers they hired will finally convince them to get rid of the brown
- Vadi0, on 11/12/2008, -3/+21I still can't believe they named it a Jackalope.
I mean, come on... I usually don't mind, but a jackalope? It does not exist! (nevermind that everyone outside the english culture will be wtfconfused) - Nephersir7, on 11/12/2008, -5/+19Ubuntu 9.10 King Kong because we all know late 2009 is really Linux's year in desktop
- tj111, on 11/12/2008, -0/+13Hopefully the wealth of new UI Developers and Graphic Designers hired at Canonical will finally implement some sweeping changes to the Ubuntu theme.
- HeyArnold, on 11/12/2008, -1/+13Ubuntu 10.02 "Molested ManBearPig"
- noogymmij, on 11/12/2008, -3/+14It doesn't matter. They will do the same thing they always do near to the release.
They will scrap it and go back to the lame old styles. - benologist, on 11/12/2008, -5/+15Welcome to digg. Every version we enjoy many micro-comparisons of the handful of differences contained in a new Ubuntu version, as well as screenshots, installation guides and various prophecies about how Ubuntu is on the brink of forcing Microsoft into bankruptcy.
Sadly many blogs have realised writing about Ubuntu is an easy way to boost your ad impressions for the month without the trouble of having to actually think of or research a topic.
Saddest of all is the bit where they think telling and re-telling and re-telling and re-telling us about Ubuntu = successful marketing. - Skyview, on 11/12/2008, -2/+11So now we will see lots of incredibly nice mockups , designs and suggestions.
Everybody will be hopeful that Ubuntu will look good and slick - the way it should be.
Then the final release will feature some ugly ass theme.
We all know it's the inside that counts, but only ugly distributions keep on saying that.
History repeats itself ... - ethana2, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9My family has used Ubuntu since 2007. 2007 was our Year of the Linux Desktop.
- oblique63, on 11/12/2008, -0/+8well, it is a lot harder to get a real gtk+icon+window theme working properly than it is to whip up a mockup in photoshop...
that being said, I hope the Dust theme is at least considered for inclusion in 9.04, it's one of the few that has gone from being a really cool simple mockup, to a full-out, fully functioning theme, while keeping a good amount of the aesthetically pleasing aspects of the original design... - blooby, on 11/12/2008, -0/+7It's a Guinea Jackalope!
- weizbox, on 11/12/2008, -1/+8The new ones are pretty ugly... but I'm still digging that older II/wood panel one. Since Ubuntu didn't make these, I suppose I might start working on that gdm theme :)
- mrsteveman1, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6These are actually the same mockups i saw a few months ago for 8.10...........so yea. Recycling is common it seems.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -1/+7Don't get your hopes high.

The solid wood theme is a mock up it doesn't exist. It may require some mods to gnome itself. That being said you can get very close to that themed mock up.
Gdm aka the login screen:

You could use gdesklets for the clock, weather, ect...

Gnome do could be the launcher in the middle

The Icon theme is a mix of different themes I don't know where to find it premixed like that.
Suggestions and questions welcome
complaints google goatse - bhalo05, on 11/12/2008, -1/+7I think the only purpose of the 6 month cycle is to keep people talking about them all the time. Other than that... what sane reason could be for that?
- mobomofo, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5These mockup creators need to take into consideration what is actually possible in GTK and Gnome. A couple of these themes would require a drastic overhaul of Gnome's UI and that's just not going to happen in the next 6 months. Also, @Nephersir7, Ubuntu 9.10 King Kong would be a kick ass release name.
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -2/+7We are still waiting for our Hungry Hippo. Damn you Canonical.
- jamesey, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5you just changed their release schedule
- BootsElectric, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5Yeah, that wood panel one was a great mix of flat tones and other OS elements while staying modern and keeping it's own stamp. They need to hire someone to make it happen, then maybe Ubuntu wouldn't be looked at as "nerd design" anymore.
- oblique63, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5ubuntu doesn't 'scrap' anything; none of these are official mockups...
- arcticblue, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4Oh come on... You know not one of these mockups will be accepted and 9.04 will look just like 8.10 with a different wallpaper. It's been like this every single release for a while now. Why do people even waste so much time making these mockups (although some of them are nice, they're still just mockups) and try to get them in to Ubuntu? It just won't happen.
- steelmaverick, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4The format is Ubuntu [Adjective] [Animal].
Since King is not an adjective, and Kong is a name, not an animal, I doubt it would happen.
Maybe Kickass Kangaroo. - v4vishal, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4What's in a name? Vista is a beautiful name; but didn't MS drop it from its ad campaign? At least there is some theme in ubuntu names (I agree that Jackalope is a bit too much); but XP, Vista, 7.. they seem random!
- drgmdp, on 11/12/2008, -1/+5thoses guys put some serious time on making ubuntu look awful...
- theOster, on 11/12/2008, -1/+5yep, that's the joke.
- Ndiggnation, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4They could have called it the Jeery Jackass..
- Culyt, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4just call them eight dot ten like I do. The animal names are only really supposed to be code names, you'll notice they don't use the names on the Ubuntu website much.
- abbathdoom, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4Canonical need to hire the guy who does the Shiki colours theme. In one fell swoop they would fix all their theme problems.
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Shiki-C ... - shanesemler, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3These themes aren't that great. Dust is better. Plus, why are people so in love with docks? They aren't terribly useful and the one's I've tried on linux, AWN included, were slow and clunky.
- Leopards, on 11/13/2008, -1/+4Quit bitching and do something about it! My desktop hasn't had the standard Intrepid Ibex look since the first day! That is why you can use your own wallpaper and change the type and color of just about everything! I find a medium grey on the titlebar makes it much easier on eye and more readable!
- turezky, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4Again? :)
- nutmac, on 11/12/2008, -2/+5I tried really hard to like 8.10's DarkRoom theme, but it proved to be more of a geek's toy. Dark brown background and controls provide poor contrast to white background and text fields used by most web pages and applications. Sadly, these mock ups seem to be just an iteration of same flawed ideas.
- oblique63, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4needs more fluffiness...
see: http://news.softpedia.com/newsImage/Ubuntu-9-04-Re ... - jakereilly, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4There is a reason why Vista and OS x don't use brown in their themes. It's neutral, it is glaring and distracting. The UI designers of ubuntu are simply airheads. To hell with being "different", I want something that looks better than something I could have designed when I was 12.
- Litespeed, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3I have to agree with you. Frankly, I think the only reason people get so wet over these dark themes is because they look different. They look nice in screenshots, but in reality they are a pain in the ass to use.
- freezerburn666, on 11/12/2008, -3/+6oh i dugg this before it hit front page and then instantly regretted it as its just another ***** article bout themes. honestly, if you think all ubuntu is is brown and orange then your a ***** retard. also these mock-ups ***** blow compared to my setup.
- shredswithpiks, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4But, brown is the best color.
- Stonekeeper, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3year in desktop sounds like a david blaine stunt
- helloothere, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4The sooner they kill that god-awful brown theme, the better.
Speaking of which, what happened to their "theme overhaul" scheduled for 8.10? First it was planned for Hardy, then it was deferred to Intrepid... and from what I've seen, the brown human theme's barely changed, if at all. Are they counting the new dark option as their OS's amazing transformation? - Nicoon, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Wow, those sure are terrible. Buried.
- MWeather, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3"there is no plan of a theme redesign for this next version"
- ethana2, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3How can you eat that poop-colored chocolate?! You make me sick. Seriously?
It's just brown. That's what it's called-- and it's actually really nice in desktop themes if it's used right. - Litespeed, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4I don't think your sexual orientation has anything to do with it.
- Maddman, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2And then there's the uber-nerds, who comment on those Digg articles about fan-created mockups of an OS.
Oh wait... - jonsterling, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2And the mockups for Ibex were beautiful. But they were not factored into the real product, because they never were actual real themes. The freetard artists are really talented, and I admire them greatly. But it all seems like a joke when they make beautiful mockups and create the hype, but then never actually deliver in the final product.
