- x713, on 03/13/2009, -2/+54What is with all the hate in here? I don't know whether to believe it is normal people or just some Microsoft or Apple employees getting paid to trash Ubuntu. Anyway, definitely looking forward to trying KDE 4 now that it looks more stable and ext4.
- 4DFX, on 03/13/2009, -0/+47Finally, PulseAudio that doesn't crash with 6 channels, no more volume-scrollbar-doesn't-close bug, a wonderful new notification system, ext4, and *gasp* GEM!! Oh this is going to be a wonderful release!
- enlligghtenment, on 03/12/2009, -1/+46And the usual screenshot tour -> http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ubuntu-9-04-Alpha-6 ...
- tripzero, on 03/13/2009, -2/+40FTA: "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is now disabled, to reduce issues experienced by users who accidentally trigger the key combo. "
How does one "accidentally" hit this key combo? Did you miss Ctrl+Alt+F12 or something? - noahgelman, on 03/13/2009, -0/+35Good, download a dictionary
- cigrainger, on 03/13/2009, -1/+34I don't understand why the Windows/Apple fanboys think that it's impossible to edit the Gnome desktop. I dislike the way it comes too, but the beauty of GNOME (and Linux in general) is how customizable it is. Do a search for 'beautiful gnome' or similar (and hope it doesn't bring up midget porn), and you'll see what I mean. BTW, I'm typing this on my iMac. I like both, and think those who sit and bitch about Ubuntu, making really ignorant statements, are just tools.
- JohnFlux, on 03/13/2009, -0/+31"How do I log out?"
"Ah, just press ctrl+alt+delete and chose logout"
"Which delete?"
"huh? oh wai.."
"wow it logged out quickly. But why didn't it ask me if I wanted to save my open documents? I hope my 100-page-thesis-that-i-haven't-saved-once is okay!" - MiGs2, on 03/13/2009, -1/+31Calm down, calm down.... just don't release.. around.. here.
- Swivelstick, on 03/13/2009, -1/+26amateurtip: using PROTIP is obnoxious and douchy at the same time.
- Thoku, on 03/13/2009, -0/+22How do you restart X if it crashes?
Ctrl+alt+facesmash ? - gnatinator, on 03/13/2009, -4/+25PROTIP: First impressions to new users are important.
- vsujohn2, on 03/13/2009, -0/+21Its before beta!
- waspbr, on 03/13/2009, -0/+20just disable linux news from you view page and stop trolling
- mynameistux, on 03/13/2009, -1/+19ok, you don't like the wallpaper, good for you, change it. While you think of *****, I think of coffee, and earth, and wood and other warm things. It doesn't take long to completely change it to whatever colour you want.
- neocreo, on 03/13/2009, -1/+18When people complain about the original theme for Ubuntu - cripes, I have never experienced an OS where you could adjust so many elements look and feel so easily.
For a long time I ran with a Mac-ified version, that worked brilliantly and was pleasant to look at. And there are ready-made themes to use too. Easy to install.
What is important with this release is that it becomes a smoother experience. - adderx99, on 03/13/2009, -0/+17digg effect is hitting the servers. please use the torrents....

32bit http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/alpha-6/ ... - 0tis, on 03/13/2009, -0/+17Hey, people would say the same about Windows if it were true.
Pulseaudio in the current release was pretty much a debacle though... all the parts are there, but you have to know what you're doing to set it up properly. - mavar, on 03/13/2009, -0/+16Calm down. Don't you think its a bit too extreme to think that Canonical is a boneheaded masochistic company aimed at making sure their customers hate it ?
If you have noticed, they are focusing on the desktop experience (new notification system). Not just a theme. They have introduced a new GDM and I am sure they are going to take feedback on that into consideration when they start making skin changes.
Companies can't move as fast as individual contributors do, because they have numerous priorities which may or may not be apparent to most outsiders. This is the reason why individual contributors from the community artwork team try and make the artwork better while Canonical works on the official desktop release.
Don't expect a completely changed *and* stable desktop release compared to 8.06 until 10.06, the next LTS. Meanwhile, either contribute or at least be patient while the company catches up. - yfph, on 03/13/2009, -2/+17Not everyone uses their computer solely for games you know. Maybe you heard of a thing called work. Anyways, I'm usually pretty busy, so kxmame usually fills my desire to bust out a game now and then.
- alpineswirl, on 03/13/2009, -0/+14I understand your point, I'm only digging you down because you type like a retard.
- Rudegar, on 03/13/2009, -0/+14it's a taste thing i guess but it is easier to customise it then
osx or vista - gnatinator, on 03/13/2009, -2/+16This is the "excrement" wallpaper as the original artist intended it:
http://www.behance.net/Gallery/Intrepid-Ibex/13289 ...
IMO, much more visually pleasing. Ubuntu is a "first linux distribution" to many users. With the 8.10 wallpaper, the first impression users are getting of Linux on the desktop is literally an image of *****.
It amazes me how the Ubuntu release producers do not see this. - daftman, on 03/13/2009, -1/+14I love these article sometimes. It helps me block a bunch of idiots.
- kahrn, on 03/13/2009, -0/+12The release schedule can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JauntyReleaseSchedule
- Dragonis, on 03/13/2009, -0/+12there are numerous ways to change theme to your liking. you asking for a default theme that you like is like these fan boys telling you to complain to Gnome.
the purpose of kepeing it plain is to appeal to everyone (or at least try to). not everyone with a Mac likes the whole bubble effect when mousing over an icon. Things like that don't need to be default - oobuntu, on 03/13/2009, -1/+12you do know that gnome is equally as affected, right?
- cigrainger, on 03/13/2009, -0/+10Another ignorant statement. This is patently untrue, and shows you haven't spent any time with Ubuntu. It's actually more the other way around, and if you don't know why, you need to stop posting as if you have a vague understanding of the things about which you are speaking.
Why the 'you idiot' thing anyway? Very childish. Ad hominem attacks don't make you right. - daftman, on 03/13/2009, -0/+10Do you know there this new uber cool ***** feature in digg call ... The Filter? Learn to use it
- 4DFX, on 03/13/2009, -0/+9Graphic Execution Manager. A unified system for graphic memory management. Intel said they boosted performance around 50-60% by using it with their driver.
- paulsmith288, on 03/13/2009, -0/+9Anything which helps improve pulse audio is a plus for me.
What is GEM? - Kabloink, on 03/13/2009, -0/+9There is no reason you have to use the command line to update your software in Ubuntu. You can easily use the software update program or synaptic to update your software. Even downloaded debs will use the gdebi gui if you click on them.
Of course the users still have the option to use the command line to update the software, but it is in no way a necessity. - jknevitt, on 03/13/2009, -0/+8It always reminds me of a coffee-cup stain on a piece of paper. When I started using it, I HATED the color scheme. Now it reminds me of all the things you've mentioned, which I guess is the point (along with the whole 'all the skin tones of the world' thing that Canonical have mentioned previously).
- oobuntu, on 03/13/2009, -0/+8don't you mean:
Even worse, I was exposed to the broadcom's lack of support which required multiple cryptic downloads, terminal entries, etc......which put me off broadcom indefinitely.
i find it hard to believe that an open source advocate is (1) trying linux so late in the day (2) running away so quickly. - armo, on 03/13/2009, -2/+10Strange, looks like a coffee stain to me. Just because you're clearly obsessed with scat doesn't mean everyone else is.
But yes, the wallpaper will obviously be changed from the Ibex to something more fitting for the Jackalope codename. - JohnFlux, on 03/13/2009, -0/+8Ah yes, lets judge OS developers by the most vocal proponents people on digg. I'm sure that the main OS developers have nothing better to do than trash talk MS on forums.
/s - tripzero, on 03/13/2009, -1/+9I personally hate windows XP's dock. It's buggy and lame. Vista's is the same code base. Windows 7 is a slight improvement, yet still has its annoyances (yes I've used it).
Gnome's panels have rounded corners, anti-aliased edges, simple and easy to use menus, and is relatively bug free. What is Windows 95 esque about that?
I used to reboot to Ubuntu at work just to look at something prettier than XP. Even with a "brown" theme. But that's just my opinion... but I'm right.
BTW, when windows implements proper scroll focus (ie, windows that don't have the focus can still be scrolled with the mouse wheel), then I may believe they are "innovating and refining" the desktop. - theaceoffire, on 03/13/2009, -1/+8You are attempting to be a douche, Allow or deny?
- Kabloink, on 03/13/2009, -0/+7Hopefully, they haven't disabled Alt-SysRq-K also. Since, I am pretty sure few users would ever accidentally hit that combo.
- Utaku, on 03/13/2009, -0/+7It's a matter of personal taste. I love this wallpaper, I even use it on my windows xp computer at work.
- 0tis, on 03/13/2009, -1/+8As a stultified Linux fanboy, I am going to bury you; I agree that the default theme could look better, but I don't think it's hideous.
All it takes is to change the wallpaper, and most people can do that - I don't see any problem with the borders, etc, but if you're the kind of person who cares that much about how they look, you're likely the kind of person who knows how to change them (which isn't hard, but let's assume it's beyond your everyday user).
If I'm honest, I'm glad that Canonical are focusing on functionality rather than Aero-style effects (don't take that as a dig at Windows, much as I don't like using it - the functionality is there as well as the shiny bits). Otherwise it's a bit like playing the latest computer game - it may have photo-realistic graphics but if no effort has been put into the gameplay, the game will still be boring.
That said, I still have Compiz installed for pointless cubes (now with added fishtank!). - daftman, on 03/13/2009, -0/+7> In about 30 seconds I can re-arrange the Gnome theme onto one bar and it behaves and looks pretty much exactly like Windows 95. Start bar, quick launch, dock, system tray, clock.
It's call flexibility.
In about 30 seconds you can also rearrange it to make it look like Mac OS X dock or Vista tool bar.
Can your 15 years ago concept do that?
> I am saying 'there is room for improvement'.
Alrite so where the ***** are your ideas of "room for improvements"?
Oh right, it's so ***** easy to arbitrarily say "there is room for improvement" to everything isn't it. Coming up with the goods is the hard bit.
>If you wern't so bent on defending it like I just insulted your mum we could probably have a discussion about how it can be improved. Unfortunatley it's just not possible with people like you around.
No you're just boring. Please go die somewhere. - dcherryholmes, on 03/13/2009, -1/+8I don't doubt you're telling the truth, and it may be of no consolation, but I haven't had any wireless cards fail to work out of the box in a loooooong time. It used to be a PITA, agreed, but most cards work now (looking at you, Broadcom). Sorry it was such a deal breaker.
- Stonekeeper, on 03/13/2009, -0/+7From what I've read around the internet, I believe it's the latter.
- Meep3D, on 03/13/2009, -2/+9I think it's to stop comedy IRC 'hints' such as saying 'Wow, holding ctrl+alt+f12 brings up a cool easter egg' and watching all the Linux users disconnect. :)
- pingveno, on 03/13/2009, -1/+8Ever hear of dual boot? Personally I mainly use Kubuntu (the KDE sister project of Ubuntu), but I keep Windows around for when I absolutely need it. That mostly includes games and testing HTML on Internet Explorer (combined with obscenities caused by the results).
- yetAnotherCroc, on 03/13/2009, -0/+7Waaaah Waaaah Waaah!
But seriously, if the choice of theme is the only thing you have to complain about then Canonical are doing a damn fine job. - raydeen, on 03/13/2009, -1/+8Riiiiiight...because looks are so much more important than security and stability.
- boicityboy, on 03/13/2009, -0/+7on many keyboards, the "delete" key is right next to the backspace key... trying to do a ctrl-alt-del (which I think is pretty common in the Windoze world) can accidentally be a ctrl-alt-backspace. Maybe adding a "are you sure?" prompt to ctrl-alt-backspace would be better than disabling the key combo altogether. I still find myself having to kill X occasionally.
- javaroast, on 03/13/2009, -0/+6"And it looks like crap. Seriously. " Resounding argument there, top notch points and convincing delivery! Superb Linux bashing.
Meep, to me it seems you might be simply tired of the fanboy train, and you can avoid that by not playing the game. If you look at the development of Linux over time you'll see that it doesn't really ignore criticisms. The experience has improved leaps and bounds even in the last 5 years.
It doesn't help when you have someone make a rational reply and you claim he is M$ bashing. The comment gave you some reasons why he thinks the way he does and you go off half-cocked like the fanboys you claim to despise.
So here is my suggestion for you... Instead of wallowing with the fanboys, take a step up and make sure your comments are void of the the types of things in a typical fanboy comment. Offer constructive, and substantive comments and most importantly listen to others arguments with an open mind. You might be surprised to find that you really aren't that far apart from some others in the discussion.
But if you continue to lead with flames, you can expect flames in return. - waspbr, on 03/13/2009, -0/+6you really fail to see the big picture here, ubuntu comes is released in a standard frugal form, but unlike Mac OS and windows it is extremely customisable. If you want a dock, there is a whole rang of docks to choose from, if you want a new theme just go to www.gnome-look.org and download yourself a new one.
The ubuntu jaunty clearlooks human theme looks great, for some reason the brown looks a little more like copper to me (just me?) and it is very easy on the eyes.
your rant is completely misplaced -
