- tsf5000, on 02/28/2009, -1/+36Because you want it to be named after you?
- Leopards, on 02/28/2009, -1/+24How long ago was it that you tried out Ubuntu?? Flash works for me and my webcam has worked in the last 3 versions!!
- arrenlex, on 02/28/2009, -0/+19Karmic Koala. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karmic_Koala
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -2/+20Dugg cause I like Ubuntu. They just keep better. I didn't like 6.06 LTS though.
- nutmac, on 02/28/2009, -4/+22You mean 10.4? Every Ubuntu fanboys know that major version number corresponds to the year (e.g., 8, 9, 10 to 2008, 2009, 2010) and minor to the month (e.g., 4, 11 to April, November). And Ubuntu is on bi-annual schedule, one on April and one on November.
- booyahbitch, on 02/28/2009, -3/+20Ummm...that is your reason for Linux being fail?!? You need to broadcast yer pr0n across the innertoobs or something? That has got to be the weakest excuse I have heard.
- Dunnix, on 02/27/2009, -1/+18Nice, can't wait to test the notification system. Though I wish Mark Shuttleworth would decide to have actions tide in with notifications, kinda like growl. =(
- jordantneff, on 02/28/2009, -4/+20You might be the dumbest troll ever lol
- josepablos, on 02/28/2009, -2/+18is just a joke .. wtf!
- mishabear, on 02/28/2009, -0/+15aawkward aardvark?
- leejarratt, on 02/28/2009, -0/+156.06 LTS didn't like you.
- motang, on 02/27/2009, -1/+15Other versions including the new ARM build is available here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JauntyJackalope/TechnicalO ...
- secrity, on 02/28/2009, -0/+12Jaunty Jackalope is the development name, the actual name after it is released will just be '9.04'.
- theaceoffire, on 02/28/2009, -1/+13(October)
- KAMiKAZOW, on 02/28/2009, -0/+11Backups are always good.
- jimT, on 02/28/2009, -2/+13I'm waiting for 9.10: Krispy Koala or Knocked-up Kangaroo!
- dasunst3r, on 02/28/2009, -0/+10Try the 180 series driver. You'll need to install nvidia-180-modaliases.
- ileftfark, on 02/28/2009, -0/+10Best advice in Linux - Put /home on a separate partition. Third best advice I ever got.
- sigmaman2, on 02/28/2009, -1/+11I am who I am because of who we all are.
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -1/+11BURN
- theaceoffire, on 02/28/2009, -0/+9I would back up everything, and format the computer.
There is a new File system (Ext 4) available for this one, and it has some neat features... but to get all the benifit, you would have to format as Ext 4.
So yeah, you can upgrade without formating, but you get a bit faster format if you go through the trouble. - godsdead, on 02/28/2009, -0/+9I cant belive how fast 9.04 has come around already!, good work guys and gals!
- KAMiKAZOW, on 02/28/2009, -0/+9Ubuntu is not the only Linux distro around, you know.
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -0/+8No, just put Ubuntu on a flash drive, boot it up on a school computer, fire up Gparted, and take off the boot flag for the OS's partition, the reaction is classic.
- noahgelman, on 02/28/2009, -0/+8Can I upgrade my Ubuntu without having to back up my files and programs, or do I have to back everything up before?
- clip9, on 02/28/2009, -1/+8You can do it. But it can be risky. I've done it several times never had any issues. But I can't guarantee that it will work for you!
$ sudo update-manager -d - RobynG7, on 02/28/2009, -0/+7I think the idea isn't that this is something revolutionary, but rather that it's free.
- Vadi0, on 02/28/2009, -0/+7It's fairly safe to upgrade. Just don't upgrade now, wait until it's out.
- Sealbhach, on 02/28/2009, -0/+7You'll really want to go for the new ext4 filesystem, so backup and a full install including formatting the /home drive would be required. Ext4 is fast, I like it.
. - bongwater29, on 03/01/2009, -0/+7i think it's 9.10 Karmic Koala, could be wrong tho
- srg13, on 02/28/2009, -0/+7As of now, at least 437 people care. By digging it, they've promoted the story to the front page. That's how Digg works.
If you don't care, then shut the hell up, bury the story and move on, idiot... - HonoredMule, on 02/28/2009, -0/+7I guess the ibex's day has already passed.
- Jalh, on 02/28/2009, -0/+6i can't wait to install this version in my school :)
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -0/+6Krispy.......lol...bad timing..
- ileftfark, on 02/28/2009, -0/+6Flash 10 supports both V4L2 and wmode. SNACK ATTACK *****!
- KAMiKAZOW, on 02/28/2009, -0/+6H has been used twice before and Ubuntu started at W.
- illepic, on 02/28/2009, -0/+6I'm running 8.10 on the 180 nvidia drivers. An obvious improvement, especially in animations for such things as the Gnome-Do dock.
- inactive, on 02/28/2009, -0/+6Mark Shuttleworth.
- Buttink, on 02/28/2009, -3/+9WTF are you doing that requires both a webcam and flash to work together .... porn?
- enlligghtenment, on 02/28/2009, -1/+6Nope, it's not Pidgin.... it's the handler for the new notification system (Notify-OSD)... an envelope appears if there are unread notifications :)
- nutmac, on 02/28/2009, -0/+5I realize I can convert from Ext3 to Ext4 fairly easily (http://ext4.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Ext4_Howto#C ... but how do I convert older Ext3 files to Ext4? Copy and restore?
- enlligghtenment, on 02/28/2009, -0/+5Here's what's new in this alpha... http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ubuntu-9-04-Alpha-5 ...
- srg13, on 02/28/2009, -0/+5Fedora hasn't been called 'Fedora Core' for five versions now...
- wigren, on 02/28/2009, -0/+5You don't have to, but it's STRONGLY recommended. Most upgrades I've ever done have come off with out a hitch, but every once in a while something will mess up. Worst case scenario if you backup: You have to reinstall and move all your stuff back over. If you don't backup: You're *****. As for programs, every thing you have installed through the package manager now will be there after an upgrade. I can't speak for programs you may have installed manually or compiled from source. And like Vadi0 said, wait till the final release is out. Unless your testing specific hardware or something you can always install VirtualBox and try it as a virtual machine.
- Culyt, on 02/28/2009, -0/+5Problem with that is if you run out of space you have to screw around with doing things like resizing and/or moving partitions.
WARNING: DO NOT MOVE PARTITIONS!
I've lost data twice now doing that, specifically it was resizing and moving, resizing by itself shouldn't be too unsafe, but make sure you print out a 'fdisk -l /dev/sdx' so if you have to go back manually you can. Even then backup (and if you backup you might as well just nuke the partitions, copy file back and start again to be sure). - Vadi0, on 02/27/2009, -3/+8What in the world is this envelope:
http://news.softpedia.com/images/news2/Ubuntu-9-04 ... - jonsterling, on 02/28/2009, -2/+7I have a feeling I'm about to kill this joke, but I think that nutmac meant 10.04.
- NobodyWhoCares, on 02/28/2009, -0/+5The kernel is pretty generic, a one-size-fits-all deal. Hit the Ubuntu forums though and look up the Master Kernel Thread, very easy to follow guide on rebuilding the kernel, including optimizing it for your specific processor.
- arrenlex, on 02/28/2009, -0/+4What can the ARM build be used for? Obviously I can't install this on my cell phone... is anything shipping with an ARM chip these days that I can try it out on?
