- nilsalb, on 10/25/2008, -3/+44It looks just like the old one!
- inactive, on 10/25/2008, -2/+41Openoffice 2.4?
Why did they do that again? 3.0 works perfect right now. - MAGZine, on 10/25/2008, -4/+33Fortunately, the Ubuntu community realizes that the actual core functionality is what determines an update, and not the look.
Unfortunately, The Ubuntu community doesn't realize that the current color scheme needs an update. - LostOverThere, on 10/25/2008, -4/+30Uhm, the point of this is what again?
- hyperair, on 10/25/2008, -0/+19Do you even know what you're talking about? Vinagre's a client. Vino's a server. Vinagre's not about to replace Vino, because a client replacing a server is just not possible.
- weizbox, on 10/24/2008, -12/+29What a surprise, it's Gnome with the standard Ubuntu window/icon theme and new wallpaper that we're seeing in every other upcoming article (and old OpenOffice Software).... amazing :P
- MAGZine, on 10/25/2008, -2/+19Dear Softpedia,
When I click on the image thumbnail I want to view the IMAGE, not just a larger thumbnail.
Thanks
-MAGZ - pedo, on 10/25/2008, -1/+16this is more like a menu tour
- darkcompass, on 10/25/2008, -0/+11Id be moving to ubuntu on my HP laptop if they sort the wifi out without ndiswrapper
- Megatog615, on 10/25/2008, -0/+113.0 came out too late in the development cycle.
- havokzero, on 10/25/2008, -4/+14I can see that the Ubuntu team has been hard at work creating yet another brown wallpaper. I'm just hoping that they give it more of a polished look in Photoshop before final release.
/sarcasm - adjohnson916, on 10/25/2008, -0/+10I don't mind the new wallpaper...think it's pretty cool looking. Some people like the original artist's version of it (before the brown-loving Ubuntu Team had their way) better, which actually might be included as a alternate default.

and: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/ ... - jhchrist, on 10/25/2008, -0/+8It will probably be in backports, assuming you turn those on.
- mattycoze, on 10/25/2008, -0/+7I spent the weekend in the lab upgrading the Ubuntu distro's I had operating on the machines we use for data collection and analysis in pharmacological studies in cardiac reperfusion. I made the switch a year ago when I got frustrated with windows and had already made the change with my PC's at home. So much to say it took a bit of convincing with the tech-staff to modify the campus computers... and develop a program that would log data for our purposes (with the IT students)... but I am thoroughly impressed at its performance and I'm a happy user :p
- Schrodinger2, on 10/25/2008, -0/+7The fonts don't suck this time! This was one of my pet peeves with older ubuntus. I always had to change the default fonts.
- TheSprunk, on 10/25/2008, -0/+6What the hell are you people bitching about. Did you forget they do a major update every 6 months? This isn't like a new version of windows where everything gets progressively and thoroughly *****. And I'd wager that in the time It takes Window's to take a few steps foward, Ubuntu's already jogged up the street
- brickbat, on 10/25/2008, -0/+6Digg isn't really the best place for this. You should use the support forums.
Go here and post your question.
http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?s=c28d5b7 ...
You shouldn't install the driver from the nvidia site because it may break things in the current setup. The proprietary drivers in Ubuntu are thoroughly tested and are your best chance for a stable system.
You should make sure you give some more information though. eg. Does it give an error when you try to install the proprietary drivers? Does it download the drivers? That way people can help you solve the problem more easily. - saturn5, on 10/25/2008, -0/+6Why even bother doing Ubuntu screenshot tours? The look never changes.
- Ajnasz, on 10/25/2008, -0/+6just another gnome screenshot tour..
- JK1150, on 10/25/2008, -1/+6Bureaucratic nonsense like "don't install non-production software on production machines"
- oobuntu, on 10/25/2008, -2/+7you upgraded production machines to pre-release version of the distro? i hope not, for your job's sake
- Litespeed, on 10/25/2008, -0/+5The point is to get traffic to their site.
- Neiby, on 10/25/2008, -1/+5That's exactly what I was going to say. Oh, wow, it's Gnome with a new wallpaper. Good thing we have all these screen shots that look exactly like all the other screen shots except for the background.
- muty, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4ah being able to digg as your os installs sure feels good :)
- JeffersonDavis, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4Grand premise, bad design! I have hated it since day one. Can I say that? :)
- metalgel, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4ubuntu works beautifully on my HP. even the blue finger touch controls for dvd and volume work.
- talonstriker, on 10/25/2008, -1/+5Is it just me or are the default backgrounds progressively getting worse?
GUI looks nice besides the diahrrea themed colors....wonder if I could get those icon sets for KDE 3.5 - terrorpin, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4Right clicks, sets as desktop background
- robertlankford, on 10/25/2008, -1/+5You know what's funny to me? All these comments bashing this article. As if a posted web page on the internet could be boring to some folks. 'Cause, you know, apparently that's all that on the intertubes right now! Sheesh.
Then there's the comments expecting more out of Ubuntu. This I sorta get. I don't think folks appreciate what a Linux Distro actually is. Of course it's only "gnome with a different wallpaper". That's kinda the point. Seriously. All you folks who just want something that looks really sexy and cool to show of to your Apple-owning friends --- drink the cool aid and buy an even newer Mac. That's the only way you'll ever win that game (and it is a game).
My experience? I forwarded this URL to a friend at work who's ever only used Windows and has had to listen to me extol the virtues of Ubuntu for the last year or so. He walked over to my office and exclaimed that he could understand how someone ought to consider something this polished looking vs. just going out and buying the same ol' thing they've always bought (Windows). In other words, he got something from this article. Screenshot tours, although quick-and-easy to post, have value to folks who still haven't really been exposed to Ubuntu yet. - Slade605, on 10/25/2008, -2/+6Hmmm..... OS I like for free.... OS I hate for over $200+
It doesn't balance. - mattycoze, on 10/25/2008, -1/+5Heh; well actually for your information - yes it was the pre-release version of Ubuntu; no my job is not in jeopardy. As far as I know, my rights to modify the computers, were granted when allowed to install the previous version of Ubuntu and willfully update. Indeed, there was a lot of paperwork mainly accepting the responsibility of any damage I inadvertently cause to the computers (covering their insurance of course). I appreciate the fact that I wasn't hampered by bureaucratic nonsense.
- opusaz, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Thanks. The one in the RC images looked more like a coffee mug stain than any animal, at least to my eyes.
- infinitejones, on 10/25/2008, -1/+4That's funny because I've been using Ubuntu since 2005 on a variety of mass-market laptops and desktops, of exactly the sort a novice would probably use, and during installation I've never once had to do any configuration other than making a few simple choices in a few simple dialog boxes.
If you're installing it on a weird old machine, or one with manually chosen custom hardware, chances are you'll need to do some non-trivial configuration. Also, chances are you're not a novice.
If you're installing it on a mass-market machine that you haven't customised in any way (just like the vast majority of novices would be!) and you find yourself having to manually configure xorg.conf, you're trying way too hard to find complexities in something that doesn't need to have any. - thevoiceless, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3I agree with opusaz, what's up with ruining such a fantastic wallpaper? The original is way more detailed and elegant than the one used in the RC.
- auruspex, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Untrue. I'm currently in 8.10 RC1 and the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf still indeed exists.
- aywwts4, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3I would say they are getting worse as time goes on.
I'm using this one, its from an ancient ubuntu release 6.06. http://lucumr.pocoo.org/static/pictures/dawn_of_ub ...
I think everything went downhill after 7.04, 7.10 was just too dark, and then what the hell was up with that abstract bird thing? I Know for a fact there were some very nice wallpapers being submitted for all of these operating systems, but they picked the weirdest lamest one to be default. - inactive, on 10/25/2008, -1/+4I don't much like the poo, but there are some nice themes in the default install.
- tylerjwilk, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3And please offer a next image link for god sakes. i found manually incrementing the numbers in address bar faster than scrolling the page.
- bmorency, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3does anyone know if they will release it later as an update once they test it more or are we going to have to wait until the next release of Ubuntu?
I know I can just install it myself but just want to know when it will be in the repos. - richlw, on 10/25/2008, -2/+56 days? But I want it now!
- silfiriel, on 10/25/2008, -2/+5I got back to digg just to comment on this? It's gotta be a mistake, the final release will probably contain OOo 3.0. Ubuntu's premise is that it delivers the latest and the best open source apps.
- ethana2, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Everyone wants wireless. Almost everyone, with 8.10, is going to get it.
Atheros Just Works
Broadcom made Linux drivers because of Dell, and Ubuntu uses them. - secrity, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Recent distros are very good at getting the video right, even with unusual video combinations.
- rowjimmy, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3hint - use kde if you want a more "involved" desktop; gnome just works - and adding compiz atop of it makes it look fancy (and adds a few good features, like different ways to alt-tab, zoom out to see all open windows, etc). i hope and assume that gnome will never turn into some crazy bloated desktop environment, as that's why i don't like kde. but that's the great thing with linux - if you don't like something, you can change it!
- the7thmagus, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3yes, you can. if only they'd listen, because everything else about Ubuntu is just perfect
- awhiteflame, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
- grexeo, on 10/25/2008, -5/+8Someone please tell me that's not the default wallpaper.
- emberjohn, on 10/25/2008, -3/+6It looks dull.
- trogdoor, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3What chipset?
- multifacet3d, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2They actually did a impressive job this time. Everything works out of the box - even wireless on my laptop!!
I've been trying to get wireless to work for a few months now with Gutsy and Heron, but to no avail. -
