- exscape, on 10/30/2008, -0/+24"Using 64-bit will give you 2x the (theoretical) throughput" no no no. That's not how it works. The main difference is that the CPU registers are 64-bit instead of 32, meaning you can do bigger calculations faster, and that you can adress >4GB RAM without ugly hacks. Do NOT expect any major performance boost in regular applications. Don't expect one AT ALL unless you use, for instance, GIMP with HUGE images.
- zeroshiftsl, on 10/30/2008, -7/+29Welcome to the digg.com Ubuntu forum.
- Renton, on 10/30/2008, -1/+22I couldn't use 8.04 on my laptop because there were no drivers for my wireless card (ndiswrapper wouldn't work). But with, 8.10, everything works right out of the box. Finally a no hassle Ubuntu install that the average user can do without looking for drivers or workarounds.

Look up Dust theme. It's what I'm using. Other then that Aurora engine based themes are really nice. - tamman2000, on 10/30/2008, -0/+19Neither is windows or Mac... but a lot of people have gotten used to them, just as they can with ubuntu...

Each time one of my favorite distros comes out, I load it, play with it, dig deep into its guts, and then break something. Time to load another one!

- jvincent08, on 10/30/2008, -0/+13I highly doubt you'll get it faster via direct http on the DAY its released. Besides, like the above poster said, torrents save servers. It saves them bandwidth and cpu load, which cuts down on costs, which helps them to continue doing the great things they do for free. Right now I'm taking full advantage of my bandwidth (8 Mbps down) using these torrents, AND I'm helping servers. I suggest you do the same ;)
- secrity, on 10/30/2008, -0/+13Change it to whatever you want. The default wallpaper and themes are easily changed.

First company to make that OS wins! - inactive, on 10/30/2008, -1/+12God, that's promising. Driver issues are what's been primarily keeping me away from Linux. There's nothing more intimidating about a new OS than finding yourself ass-deep in config files and such before you even have a chance to use it.
- ch40sBr1ng3r, on 10/30/2008, -7/+18I use Opensuse 11 but Ubuntu is a very powerful linux. Kudos in the release. Dugg.
- jvincent08, on 10/30/2008, -0/+11Well, thats good then :) The more seeders the better!

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download - jeremec, on 10/30/2008, -2/+12I ditched KDE4 for GNOME about 3 months ago and it was the best decision I ever made. However, likewise I long ago ditched GNOME for KDE3 and that then was the best decision I made. It's ebb and flow... However, I'm so happy in GNOME-land right now, I can't see myself going back.
- exscape, on 10/30/2008, -0/+10Nope, you've been using an alpha/beta/unfinished "release".
- trogdor282, on 10/30/2008, -0/+101. Put the file somewhere
2. Download and open the correct .torrent file
3. 'set download location' as the place where you put the already downloaded file
4. hit 'check data integrity' and it will see that it's all there and start seeding.
works in ktorrent, something similar should work for other programs - bratterscain, on 10/30/2008, -1/+11I feel compelled to remind everyone of Kubuntu in these threads because Gnome just seems to lack config options for the power users while KDE seems to go for that more. KDE4 is shaping up quite nicely. Torrents:

Looks like there are A LOT of people upgrading today!
Go Shuttleworth! - int19h, on 10/30/2008, -1/+10I've been using 64-bit Intrepid for about two months now. The new kernel supports my WD Raptor harddrive far, far better than the kernel that came with Hardy. In the last month, the support for Wacom Bamboo One has been fixed and works great. But, the biggest improvement in hardware support, IMO, is that my Radeon HD3850 card now works great using the restricted driver management GUI-thingy. I've had so much pain trying to get that graphics card to work, with both Hardy and ArchLinux, so it's a great relief. (Needless to say, the problems with the proprietary graphics drivers are the fault of AMD(/ATI), not Ubuntu or ArchLinux).
I'm still not happy with "tracker", though, the search application that comes with Ubuntu, since it takes forever to search through my files and does not respect me when I tell it to go away. Luckily it's easy to remove.
When it comes to flash and java, OpenJDK works great for regular Java-applications now, but I can only make Sun's java work for displaying java applets. "Swfdec" works for playing YouTube videos, but there are still some sites that require the nonfree flash in order to cooperate. Pulseaudio has a better default setup that works great with the nonfree flash plugin from Adobe. Flash doesn't crash anymore now, but occationally some flash applications or videos just doesn't show up.
I miss "netcfg" and the way ArchLinux doesn't make any programs run in the background at startup unless you add them, otherwise Ubuntu Intrepid is brilliant. It's the best Ubuntu so far. - expert01, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9They actually have a tool now for cleaning that up.
- watcht, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9It's not just the UI, my friend, this Ubuntu's fixed alot of problems for people. The Kernel is somewhat faster*, alot more hardware support**. In my experience it's perhaps the best release for me, all my stuff is working the way it should of: examples; speakers, uhm my graphics card is running nicely finally, and a somewhat ok dual screen setup finally which was horrible for me in previous releases.
*/**= as always with an open-source OS your mileage may vary.
P.S: The new UI you are hearing about is actually just a theme, it's called DarkRoom. - Shananra, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9I dunno, my tower has more kernels than a bag of popcorn. I really need to go in there and clean it up.
- YokoZar, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9Don't do dist-upgrade, it can break things due to an incomplete upgrade. do update-manager -d
- Gonasadude, on 10/30/2008, -1/+10'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' should do it for those who aren't seeing the update. Or, go to your software sources (System->Administration->Software Sources) on the Updates tab, and make sure your 'Release upgrade' is set to normal instead of LTS.
- ssam, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9what would that take?
- daverave999, on 10/30/2008, -0/+8PEBKAC
- CalcProgrammer1, on 10/30/2008, -0/+8Stupid server, getting 20KB/s on each disk (downloading 32 and 64 bit editions simultaneously). I hate university Internet, blocking P2P and whatnot, some admin is a real idiot when it comes to Internet connectivity.
