- PhailQuail, on 10/30/2008, -14/+81Ubuntu, unlike Windows is steadily improving.
- Joh739, on 10/30/2008, -1/+30Wonderful article! I just hope that Nvidia will release compatible X.org drivers soon. Anyway I'm going to download it and test it myself.
- twiztidsinz, on 10/31/2008, -2/+27You care enough to waste your obviously valuable time making that comment.
- RobotBuddha, on 10/31/2008, -0/+24This is a bit of a milestone for me. I had windows on my laptop for a single program I needed. I no longer need to, and am 'glad' because it means I can install the better supported ubuntu back onto it. I would have said someone was insane if they'd told me a laptop of all things would have better support from linux than windows at any point in the near future. But it actually runs faster, has better wifi support, and far better battery life.
- Pfkninenines, on 10/31/2008, -2/+24Yes. If you're on this webpage, reading this article, you are the only one who doesn't care about Linux.
If you don't care, don't bother going to the site. - twiztidsinz, on 10/31/2008, -1/+21Have they fixed Horizontal Alignment of icons yet?
- Darkhacker, on 10/31/2008, -2/+20omg! The desktop also has icons and it uses a mouse. Copiers!
Jesus tap-dancing Christ, why does every new release of an OS (any OS, not just Linux) have these "omg they copied ____" posts? It's getting annoying. Everyone steals from everyone. There, happy? - Pfkninenines, on 10/31/2008, -0/+17Try re-burning the Live CD. Most errors with booting are a result of either a bad .iso, or a bad job burning the image to disk.
And please tell me you didn't just copy the .iso on to the disk. I'd expect you didn't, but it's surprising how many people think that is what you are supposed to do. - Evolutuon, on 10/31/2008, -0/+16There is no "side bar" thats just a bunch of separate widgets lined up on the side per user preference.
- keeganspeck, on 10/31/2008, -1/+17Seriously? Every single time, there's a douche that posts this EXACT comment. Don't click on the story, jackass. I don't read and comment on articles I am not interested in, why do you?
- drewhoo, on 10/31/2008, -1/+17Did you see they way they copied the idea of desktop icons, I mean Windows 3.1 TOTALLY STARTED THAT! Oh and don't get me started on the digital clock....
/sarcasm in jest :) - Sabretou, on 10/31/2008, -5/+21Erm, I believe Windows 7 will be an improvement.
>.> - noisymime, on 10/31/2008, -1/+16Don't worry, they'll drop all the cool stuff between now and whenever its released.
- maumac, on 10/31/2008, -3/+18Sure, Windows is also steadily improving... one decade at a time.
- Norumeni, on 10/31/2008, -0/+14Have you tried the newest version yet? It sounds like you haven't and are just making generalizations, I would ask you to try this first, THEN comment about all the misgivings it has for you.
- 1980Tim, on 10/31/2008, -0/+13Why cover it? If someone has a good idea take it and try to make it better, add a little, tweak it, make it your own.
A good idea is a good idea. - whiskeymb, on 10/31/2008, -0/+12Couldn't possibly disagree more with MaXPL...
About 6 months ago I bought a old Gateway tablet, used. I installed my old copy of XP on it (that I purchased and later replaced with Vista). I also dual-booted to 8.04. I had to dick around with XP for a CONSIDERABLE amount of time, I'm thinking at least 10 hours to get all the drivers installed and working. Ubuntu? Worked out of the box, even the wireless!
With a decently recent computer (last 4 years) and the latest version of Ubuntu, I'm willing to bet 10-1 that you'll have better luck getting all your hardware working on Ubuntu before you get it working on Windows (XP at least, maybe Vista is better, but who can run Vista on a 4 year old box? =-} - directrix13, on 10/31/2008, -1/+13I will start using Windows once I NEVER have to pay for it, once virus protection is not an enterprise, once I can remotely upgrade every application on every computer on my network with one command. I will use Windows when it quits having per seat per cpu per virtual machine fees, publishes its protocols and encourages open cooperation in their development thereby leading to an evolutionary approach to software. I will use Windows when I can review the source, improve it, and use it however I want. I will use Windows when I no longer have to call them up and get the OK to reinstall my legally purchased copy. This being said, I will never ***** use Windows again. I've made the step over to Linux, and I have no reason to look back at that antiquated way of doing things.
- Tiak, on 10/31/2008, -0/+10Well, they didn't really, there might've been a problem with nvidia drivers, which the article is reporting, but the update manager bugged me to ask it about getting my proprietary ATI driver working on my first boot, and the driver worked without issue.
- craigatwork, on 10/31/2008, -0/+10make that MB
- twiztidsinz, on 10/31/2008, -0/+10Actually.. I came here to ask a question and read comments.
Which I did, and while I was here I decided to take the 5 seconds it took to reply to his, and your, smartass comments.
While I wasted minimal time in replies, he wasted the time of visiting an article he "didn't" care about, the time to think up and type his "witty" remark, no doubt needing spellcheck, and then sit back in momentary smug satisfaction. - Flamekebab, on 10/31/2008, -0/+10The fact that each new release tends to include better driver support means that MaXPL's unwillingness to actually see if his hardware works before bitching about it (and having looked at his recent comment history) suggests to me that he is little more than a troll. Or she.
- Toshibi, on 10/31/2008, -1/+11broadcoms fault.
- OrangeSoda31, on 10/31/2008, -0/+10It gets even worse when the same person starts complaining about how some OS hasn't adopted the great features of another OS.
- 1980Tim, on 10/31/2008, -1/+11You've met linux users right?
- rdvon, on 10/31/2008, -0/+9Torrent.
http://torrentfreak.com/use-bittorrent-to-upgrade- ... - mikelinux, on 10/30/2008, -1/+10awesome story! liked the video! keep up the good work!
- smotpoker, on 10/31/2008, -0/+9There is some support, just not *native* support, so it should not really be a problem per se for most users I think. I know the last time I installed Ubuntu on a laptop with broadcom, it automagically detected it, busted out ndiswrapper and it came online within a few sec just like most others
- molochi, on 10/31/2008, -1/+9I know it's hard to believe, but digg started out as a slashdot with more democracy. I really expected it to turn into the ultimate source for free porn and warez. I guess political spam isn't far off.
- keeganspeck, on 10/31/2008, -0/+8Apparently they just released them a little while ago. Woo!
- huff51, on 10/31/2008, -0/+8b43-fwcutter works great
ndiswrapper is an option
broadcom released a linux driver called wl that you could try as well - whiskeymb, on 10/31/2008, -2/+10Wow, didn't know DIGG had become a support forum! =-}
I guess if we have to educate people on the political stories we can educate them here too. - noisymime, on 10/31/2008, -0/+8You realise you can still use a xorg.conf and it will overide the automatic detection stuff?
- RobotBuddha, on 10/31/2008, -1/+9Are you sure they don't work? I had trouble with the drivers from the intrepid repositories, and tried just downloading and installing from nvidia's site. All my hardware accelerated kde desktop effects, including the 3d cube, are working fine.
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -2/+10If you never want to visit a terminal then you shouldn't be using GNU/Linux. As for media players, Amarok blows away every media player I have seen.
- Junpei, on 10/31/2008, -1/+8Not anything huge, but it's a nice upgrade. I approve of this download.
- oblique63, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7./octodd
- Delta32521, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7the whole point that Norumeni is trying to make is that you *shouldnt* need to go out of your way for wireless or video drivers for ubuntu. sure, it's been a problem in the past but there have been many improvements in providing drivers straight from repositories
- noisymime, on 10/31/2008, -1/+8I can't stress this enough people: Always do an MD5 check after you download an iso!
- huff51, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7chmod 777 octodd
be carefull octodd, now anyone can execute you - pHreaksYcle, on 10/31/2008, -1/+7Yeah, but I'm never going to actually do that. Know why?
Me either. . . - craigatwork, on 10/31/2008, -0/+6probably right. 1st downloaded thru usenet and the iso was only 677KB. just redownloaded via torrent and it was715KB. Will try again now.
- LastDitchHero, on 10/31/2008, -1/+7About time Linux had plug and play support for plugging in other monitors. Previously the only way this worked is if you had an Nvidia card. I would also like to see an option to install the real OpenOffice cause the distro builds a lot of times has broken/buggy/slow features when it comes to some parts like Base. Also I recommend using the font rendering config that can be found on Tombuntu.
In the future I hope they offer a "home server" type option that will save the contents of a home directory using easy to use GUI options and maybe even Avahi to see all the machines on the network. - weizbox, on 10/31/2008, -4/+10I'm just surprised Canonical pushed out a release that couldn't even handle OpenGL acceleration for the overwhelming majority of users...
- larsonc, on 10/31/2008, -5/+11Windows, unlike Ubuntu, is stable and doesn't need to steadily improve. But, I do hope that Ubuntu catches up to it.
Windows 7 will be what Vista should have been. So yeah, digg me down. - cquilliam, on 10/31/2008, -2/+8Am I missing something? I installed the RC last week, and my 8800GT works just fine with the nvidia driver installed in the 64bit edition. I've been playing Guildwars the last couple of days through crossover and there hasn't been a hitch.
- ScottoGato, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5With previous versions of Ubuntu, I did have to look for and use Windows 2000 drivers for my wifi. With 8.10, it worked "right out of the box". Once it installed, the first thing that popped up was my wifi detector, detecting my network. All that I had to do was enter my encryption key and I was off.
Even before, my integrated chipset was blacklisted with Compiz Fusion. I had to do a bunch of workarounds to get it working, and even then, it was very limited. This time, however, it worked right out of the box and I'm able to add a little eye candy.
I love it. Excellent release. The only thing I can really say bad things about, is not being able to tether with my Blackberry and my Zune not working with it. That's about it. - itsontheway, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5Typical: Elitist Linux user. Caught up in stupid squabble between gnome and kde or between this distro and that distro. Does not understand fact that such attitudes affect linux adoption. Comments on web pages and social sites have an air of superiority ...
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5This is one of the fine examples of why linux wont be gaining market space anytime soon? There needs to be more Cooperation between GUI coders not bickering?
- infiniphunk, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5Already test it out. I love the 'Create a USB startup Disk' Option. Now so easy to put Ubuntu on a flash drive.
