There is a good article listing the new features - onesojourner, on 07/25/2008, -3/+37nice. Its amazing how fast this software improves. It takes windows 5 years to get anything done and then it just ends up worse than what they had before.
- shimmyt, on 07/25/2008, -3/+26Everyone does know it's dead simple to change the theme right? http://art.gnome.org, http://www.gnome-look.org, plus tons of other places.
- cricketsymphony, on 07/25/2008, -3/+24still don't care
- stealthc, on 07/25/2008, -3/+21Yes.
- stonyhill, on 07/25/2008, -6/+24Seriously, does every single discussion of Ubuntu have to devolve into alternating brown haters and animal alliteration?
- jamesmcm, on 07/25/2008, -2/+19Nice to see it's getting done quickly.
- cricketsymphony, on 07/25/2008, -3/+18i'm holding out for Wanking Walruses, myself.
- ChayesFSS, on 07/25/2008, -19/+34Please drop the doo doo brown color scheme
- superspud, on 07/25/2008, -2/+16Chocolate is brown too
- neileroberts, on 07/25/2008, -1/+14Am I the only person who likes the Ubuntu colour scheme? There are thousands of other themes available to download if you don't like it. The theme for Ubuntu Studio looks pretty smart though. All dark and moody.
http://ubuntustudio.org/ - bratterscain, on 07/25/2008, -2/+15Don't forget Kubuntu is Alpha 3 as well.
http://www.kubuntu.org/ - sigmaman2, on 07/25/2008, -1/+12Either that or Masturbating Monkeys!
- flashingcurser, on 07/25/2008, -0/+10Anyone look at the bug page?
Notice the 3rd one down:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs - 3MM3, on 07/25/2008, -0/+10That's not what the 8.10 theme will be, they haven't chosen it yet. I think I remember someone saying they're using that dark theme as a place holder so developers can make sure that if they do chose a dark theme they won't have any screw-ups like brown text on brown background.
- agentlame, on 07/25/2008, -0/+9No, WE'RE Wanking Walruses. The BSD guys are Masturbating Monkeys.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/25/2008, -4/+13That's not the point. The default look is going to turn away many people who might otherwise consider using it.
Example: If Macs looked like ***** would people use them? - alperea, on 07/25/2008, -1/+10nautilus has tabs is the biggest one.
- stealthc, on 07/25/2008, -0/+8You'll have to wait for BSDbuntu
- arjie, on 07/25/2008, -0/+8If the comments on digg are to be believed, we must be in the minority. When I installed Ubuntu on a dual-boot for my dad (he uses OO.org, Firefox, and whatever camera tool comes his way so if the computer has Windows open he uses that, and if it has Ubuntu open he uses that), he liked it. A few days later he tells me, "You know, this Ubuntu stuff, it looks really well done..." I couldn't believe my ears, considering I've been told so many times that Linux is hard, it's ugly and stuff like that.
- horsepie, on 07/25/2008, -0/+8Yeah but there's a difference between doo doo, chocolate and caramel. If they manage to do brown well, Ubuntu will have a very unique look to other OSs, as hard as that may be.
- freezerburn666, on 07/25/2008, -0/+7i've had one of those before, doctor gave me some pills and it cleared right up
- matthewinDRO, on 07/25/2008, -5/+12Can't wait til Jumpin Jackalopes!
- WatchDragon, on 07/25/2008, -3/+10http://www.gnome-look.org drop the theme yourself.
- drato, on 07/25/2008, -2/+9Go back to 4chan, please.
- 3MM3, on 07/25/2008, -0/+6You'll have to wait until April 2014 for that one.
- bratterscain, on 07/25/2008, -0/+6I'm using the RC of KDE4 on Kubuntu, really liking it.
- stuffradio, on 07/25/2008, -1/+7Except Vista is more stable then XP. I'm a Ubuntu fan anyways ;)
- Flamekebab, on 07/25/2008, -5/+11Ubuntu is brown by default. Get over it.
- nandasunu, on 07/25/2008, -0/+6I like it too...
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -5/+11Should have called it Itchy Iguana...
- brettalton, on 07/26/2008, -0/+5So if he isn't happy with Windows and then growls at you when you show him a more secure and stable operating system, then I'd call him a jackass.
You can't get a more secure and stable OS and still use 100% of the Windows paradigm. Ubuntu/GNOME uses about 80-90% of the Windows paradigm, which is pretty darn good; just explain to him that Ubuntu takes care of ALL the software on his computer, and he should use Applications > Add/Remove to change the software on his computer.
Then, if you really want to get in depth, explain to him why shareware programs, especially registry editors are bad in nature and that he should embrace open source. - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -1/+6Dugg you up because I might actually use KDE4 with the next release of kubuntu, aiming to making it my DE of choice.
- Totz83, on 07/25/2008, -6/+11Voluptuous Velociraptor would be cooler
- stealthc, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4Oh, right. My bad, I got my alliterated masturbating zoo animals confused.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4I just hope that they include several versions of the same theme, one black other blue, the same with the icons. I've been proposing this idea since Edgy Eft and I don't know why they haven't done this yet, is not like it is such a big deal, is just use other colors already on the ubuntu pallet, they can get rid of all those awful default Gnome themes. Thank god we can always wait for the community @ gnome-look.org to bring the so awaited mods of the default theme :)
- AikonIV, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4I did an upgrade set today...and got tabbed Nautilus! joy =D
- nandasunu, on 07/25/2008, -2/+6If he's happy with windows, why force something else on him?
- theaceoffire, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3I don't know about you, but my XP is *very* stable.
- whereiseljefe, on 07/25/2008, -3/+6I hope to god they fix the theme before release. The colors are nasty, and I just don't think a system-wide dark color scheme is a good idea.
I do like the subtle changes to the window decorations and tabs, I think if they just adjusted the color back to the original human colors (nice, warm, yellowish-gray color scheme at least) it would work out. - freezerburn666, on 07/25/2008, -2/+5he wasnt happy with windows, otherwise i wouldn't have burdened myself with offering to help him install ubuntu and its been a nightmare ever since. he would prefer to use it, as its faster and less prone to malware/virii/etc, but he doesn't understand anything with app names like Totem and such, that just confuses him. the major killer was that tv-out will never work for him because he has a radeon 9250, only in windows can he have it working and ati will never develop a driver for linux that will let him do this.
- freezerburn666, on 07/25/2008, -3/+6still, though, there has to be something to make it better... i mean, i go to my dad "here try this operating system" and the first thing he does is go download winamp.exe to listen to streaming radio stations and then bitches at me because it wont work, so i try to explain wine, and that he doesn't need winamp anyways. so then he goes and tries to installs registry mechanic and bitches that it doesn't work either, and that he cant figure out how to defrag his HD... now, to me my dad seems retarded, but thats the reality of most PC users.
- Ademan, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4This is totally true, but even i'm disgusted by this new theme... and I don't really want it to be the face of ubuntu...
- brettalton, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3Yup, you found bug #1: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1
Here's a cookie crumb: . - haterofps3, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3Theme doesn't bother me but the Icons just don't look right, maybe they will get changed.
- cenarta, on 07/25/2008, -0/+3I'm a fan of it too. I alternate themes every so often, but always find myself going back to the Human theme. For some reason I just like looking at it.
- seandfeeney, on 07/25/2008, -1/+4"The latest Xorg is available in Hardy, Xorg 7.4, with new cutting-edge features. In the short term, this will cause increased instability for some users while the video drivers catch up."
where do I sign up? - jcani, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2but will it play crysis?
- brettalton, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2I think I know what you're trying to say, but that was the entirely incorrect way of saying it.
