- ommadawn, on 11/24/2008, -2/+4What does he mean by featureless? It's perfect because it never gets in your way, everyday use is easy and smooth, it's safe and does what I need it to. The "features" is exactly why I hate Windows.
- theunixgeek, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Take a look at the Fedora 10 release notes. http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/f10/en ...
They have a similar release cycle to that of Ubuntu's and have (quoting the release notes) better webcam support, faster booting, new gaming and entertainment features, amateur radio and electronics applications, better Java compatibility, and simplification of virtual storage in the new release. These features seem more interesting than the new ones available in Intrepid. - darkchild, on 11/24/2008, -1/+3Visually, I don't think Ubuntu 8.10 is any different from past Ubuntu releases. It would be nice if they worked on more gtk2 themes, icon themes and included more wallpapers. A lot of the new features in Ubuntu 8.10 seem to be under the hood. For me, the most important feature is the new networkmanager because it makes it very easy to setup mobile broadband unlike the past hacks that were needed in the past.
- cheeseplease, on 11/24/2008, -2/+4I don't really agree with the author, he seems to expect every 6-month release to be a complete new OS with dozens of new end-user features. I do agree on his point concerning themes however. There is a huge group of artists very willing to work on artwork for free and see their artwork incorporated in open source software, but Ubuntu doesn't really seem to pick up on it and keeps delivering very few default theme and background options, the majority of which are disliked by many people.
- cptmichael101st, on 11/24/2008, -2/+3personally, i prefer a basic gui. i can add/customize whatever i want, and I don't have to worry about crap i don't need.
coughvistacough - zzzpoohzzz, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1i dunno if he was trying to look for a difference like xp and vista... but this was 6 months... not 7 or 8 years or whatever it was for microsoft. it's not gonna be a completely revamped experience. just a decent amount of updates with a couple new features.
i for one love intrepid, with the use of the new kernel i can now use wireless on my new laptop. - theunixgeek, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1By featureless I mean that there are no compelling new user features in Intrepid (besides the tiny ones and better networking) to convince new users, say, from another distro.
Do note that, at the end, I state that I'm still a big Ubuntu fan. It's still one of my favorite distros. :-) - Bicep, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1I upgraded my work computer to Ibex and now am using dual monitors. In Hardy, the "Screen Resolution" dialog wouldn't let me extend my desktop onto the second monitor without messing up the resolution. I then wen into the conference room and plugged in the projector... works like a champ! This piece of functionality is definitely an improvement to me. The tests I've run are from a good ole HP Compaq nc6320 notebook. Perhaps using the System > Hardware Testing utility has paid off for me.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 11/25/2008, -1/+1i just switched and i love it
- depro9, on 11/25/2008, -1/+1Ubuntu kicks ass!
