You see, credit is given where credit is due... - cawpin, on 10/16/2008, -0/+28Yes, it's update process/notification system is top notch.
- inactive, on 10/16/2008, -10/+37Can't wait can't wait can't wait
- ieee, on 10/16/2008, -1/+26Do you want some open source cheese with your whine. Mark Shuttleworth DID DO something other people working with Linux DID NOT Instead of telling end users "tough luck, suck it up" he made a linux distribution catered to their end users tastes. That made people who wouldn't other care about Linux care.
- mysn239, on 10/16/2008, -2/+25I'm a low experienced user, so will Ubuntu update itself?
- weizbox, on 10/16/2008, -0/+22one more note.. check out douglas1991's spam histroy:
http://digg.com/users/douglas1991/history/comments
I would suggest he be blocked :) - wopbobaloobop, on 10/16/2008, -1/+19Rhythmbox is Gnome's music player. It's not something that's "bundled" with Ubuntu.
- weizbox, on 10/16/2008, -2/+18Only 5 points mentioned? Surely we could find a better article than this one about the new Ubuntu release.
What is the name of the new 'Network manager"? Was it created by Canonical or is he talking about the Gnome Network Manager? He barley even talked about it... like all of the points he wrote about :/ - amdlinux, on 10/16/2008, -5/+20Still the (IMHO) ugly brown colours - BUT... the current wallpaper, although brownish, really looks good, I have to admit.
And technically: Superb. Just good. I wonder why Windows still is dominating the desktop - from a technical point of view, this is getting more and more absurd. XP is from ..... 2003? 2001? And Vista is worse.... - kesam, on 10/16/2008, -1/+15You don't have to do that anymore. The upgrade button always shows up in the update manager of newer releases.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 10/16/2008, -1/+15This is the release I've been waiting for! Upgraded a few days ago from 8.04 to 8.10 and FINALLY my 2-year-old Radeon X1600Pro AGP has 3d acceleration and Compiz. The new kernel patches itself with modules so drivers like fglrx can work properly. There are also a few good UI enhancements and improvements. The CPU Scaler applet now allows you to set CPU frequencies rather than just view them, so you can conserve power easier using a laptop. It's worth an upgrade. I would actually recommend updating right now, it's that good (at least if you have a non-functional Radeon, definitely upgrade now). Can't wait to order some CD's too.
- ieee, on 10/16/2008, -2/+14There were Linux distros that catered MORE to the end users, but none that did it nearly as well as Ubuntu.
That is why Ubuntu is so popular and those obscure distros are still obscure distros.
Mark Shuttle worth did more work and he did the work ( and thinking ) of making an org that could put muscle behind an linux distro.
I've used about a dozen distros since 2000, including a progressive line of "the easiest distro yet"s. Ubuntu is by FAR the top of its heap and deserving of its good press. - weizbox, on 10/16/2008, -3/+15Trying to give 'proof' for an opinion? lol... good luck :)
(I still vote for Banshee) - TheZorch, on 10/16/2008, -0/+12Where the hell have you been? Ubuntu has supported OpenGL acceleration on the desktop with ATI and Nvidia cards for a long time now.
- Vadi0, on 10/16/2008, -3/+12Few days? I thought it was end of month.
Network Manager is made by Novell and Red Hat btw, as you see when you go to the about dialog. and of course lots of other people patched it, ubuntu probably too. - bstock, on 10/16/2008, -2/+10Few days? Try 2 weeks..
- weizbox, on 10/16/2008, -0/+8Last time I checked, you could run Amarok in Gnome just fine :) What does the display manager have to do with what apps you use? They all work everywhere :P
- djbon2112, on 10/16/2008, -0/+8Huh? You know there's graphics acceleration from DRIVERS, right? Or do you just like trolling?
- mykool, on 10/16/2008, -0/+7@kesam - yes but not untill the upgrade is officially released, if you would like to force an upgrade before the official release you will have to run the update-manager with a "-d"
- bagboyrebel, on 10/16/2008, -0/+7@johndavidjack
he was being nice, he could have called you a mac fanboy - ja4444, on 10/16/2008, -2/+8Stupid link, server dead. Try Ubuntu.com directly
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta - RudeTurnip, on 10/16/2008, -1/+7I put Ubuntu 8.04 (the AMD64 build) on my home desktop (Dell Dimension AMD64 5200, 2 gigs RAM), replacing Vista. I knew Vista was slow since I still use XP on my Macbook Pro for work, but this was the first time my desktop system had anything other than Vista. My desktop system is absolutely screamingly fast now and I don't feel the sense of regret that Linux installations of past years have given me. It runs everything I need, including DVDFab under Wine.
- naganooch, on 10/16/2008, -0/+5not really sure why you got dugg down. to me, from an OS perspective, linux is the superior, and i would love to use it exclusively. as it is, i dual boot.
the way i see it, the problems with mass adoption are:
a) that its two big competitors can afford to push to have their OS pre-installed on the machines being sold.
b) that people like my dad who use office for work don't know about, or are afraid to switch to opensource alternatives like openoffice due to (usually unfounded) fears of compatibility and learning a new interface.
c) sure most of your windows games can be made to run on wine, but most people don't want to go through the hassle...alot of games are easy to run on wine...others take a good deal of online research and fiddling with stuff
fixing A and B are important for the unwashed masses.
fixing C would be difficult. developers don't make the big name games and other software for linux because of the size of the userbase. but the userbase won't get large enough until that changes, so both problems are sort of waiting on each other to be fixed first. - inactive, on 10/16/2008, -1/+6Done.
- dknighton, on 10/16/2008, -3/+8That depends. What do you butt-reaming douchebags have planned for the *fart* eventual release of Windows 7?
- klowngoblin, on 10/16/2008, -1/+6there are no such thing as microsoft fanboys, this is an apple fanboy because hes jealous that the effects in leopard blow goats compared to compiz fusion
- madduffy, on 10/16/2008, -0/+5Not automatically, but you will have the option to upgrade when using the Update Manager.
The rest should take care of itself! - KingBabi, on 10/16/2008, -0/+5Thank you so much for posting that! I have the same card and I've had an incredibly ***** time with it and Ubuntu. Downloading the beta as we speak.
- Cenobite, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4@bagboyrebel Oh, snap!
- Khanvalescent, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4A dickless queer would be a very selfish person.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4Oh I dont know, Microsoft has been doing exactly that with Office for years (Well not an OS but still) and Adobe with Photoshop. If you at each incremental version change not much changes.
- StripeyMagee, on 10/16/2008, -9/+13Bring it!!
- mykool, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4If you would like to upgrade right now (might as well I did sunday night, no problems at all) just press alt+f2 then type "update-manager -d".
- DevilInPgh, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4Big mistake. Follow what MavRevMatt said above. Merely changing stuff in the sources.list file may leave some things out, such as kernel upgrades.
- Lhandroval, on 10/16/2008, -1/+5Uh... Linux is a community driven project, so what you say is correct but not for the reasons you think.
- bj1989, on 10/16/2008, -1/+5If you tell it to. When 8.10 is available the update manager will inform you that a new ubuntu version is available and ask if you want to upgrade.
I have to warn you though. Upgrading this way is error-prone, I tried it a few times and it succeeded only once. Also, I'm not the only one who's had upgrading trouble. It might not really break your system but it's annoying. - arjie, on 10/16/2008, -0/+4Listen, if you want to go be an *****, be one elsewhere.
I care about the specifics, because it was on random discussion board that I discovered that Ubuntu worked on a particular integrated graphics chipset that I'd had trouble with when I had RedHat 9 earlier. And that's when I installed it, and liked it there. I wouldn't have installed it without having seen that post with someone mentioning off-hand that the Via Unichrome VT8378 had direct rendering.
So more power to people talking about particular configurations that work, though this particular instance would have benefited from being more specific than less specific. I don't get it, man, Linux is really not your thing apparently, that's good. Easy solution: Turn off Linux/Unix section, it is obviously going to have pre-release stories. Leave us be. - puppetj, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3Did you even read?
- sigmaman2, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3Careful...
Your extreme, sweeping generalities are showing. - Krissam, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3install our new os? the package manager will manage that (no pun intended)
- Datcyde, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3I can't wait. Moving from vista to ubuntu will be great. No more M$ for me.....well at least not on my notebook. Titles like "Dead Planet" and "NFS: Undercover" keep me with windows.
- DevilInPgh, on 10/16/2008, -1/+4While kesam is right, you still need to type that command in if you want to upgrade right now to the beta.
- westyvw, on 10/16/2008, -2/+5I have used linux on the servers and desktops since 2001. I have linux experience.
You will mod me down, but I have to say it: I run 2 distros here currently, Ubuntu, and Debian.
Ubuntu is still the toy. Its slow, fragile, its upgrades are not always smooth, it has crashes in FF when using flash: I could go on for awhile. My debian boxes, Sid and Lenny are pretty much trouble free. I use Debian to manage lenny, and Sidux and SMXI scripts for Sid. I would expect problems with Sid, but they are few and far between thanks to a good community system of warnings when we are going through a major transition. Unlike ubuntu, i constantly move forward with kernals and packages, without major breakage.
In any case, I fear, Ubuntu's popularity hurts linux because of the fragile nature, and slow operation, and it may hurt linux chances on the desktop.
Ubuntu: FF3 beta and hardly tested PulseAudio in your last LTS release? WTF? - weizbox, on 10/16/2008, -1/+4Found out they are in fact using the Gnome Network Manager, which is hardly 'new' since it's been around since 2004. 'Updated' might be a better word for it, since previous version of Ubuntu included the Network Manager :)
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta#Networ ... - MattBD, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3So? Ubuntu don't always stick with the Gnome defaults. Ubuntu uses Firefox, not Epiphany, as its web browser. And Empathy is the official IM client of the version of Gnome that will ship in Intrepid, but I believe Intrepid is sticking with Pidgin.
- r3bol, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3Native support for 3G USB modems! There is even an automatically connect tick box for those who don't want to mess with settings.
Network Manager 0.7
Ubuntu 8.10 Beta ships Network Manager 0.7 (by Dan Williams and others), which comes with long-expected features, such as:
* system wide settings (i.e., no need to log in in order to get a connection)
* management of 3G connections (GSM/CDMA)
* management of multiple active devices at once
* management of PPP and PPPOE connections
* management of devices with static IP configurations
* route management for devices
More information can be found on the Network Manager wiki. - djbon2112, on 10/16/2008, -1/+4Huh? MacOSX is doing it. Not that it's a bad thing, but that's really all the 10.x upgrades are... new versions of the programs with some new ones thrown in, for $129. No real changes to the underlying OS.
- sigmaman2, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3*sigh*
Ignoring your idiocy, no, we won't take a day off. We won't need to.
Every time I upgraded, I just clicked on the "Dist. Upgrade" button when it appeared. Then, after a few seconds of setting up, my Ubuntu PC upgrades itself. I don't have to "install" anything.
How does that contrast with upgrading XP to Vista, or Tiger to Leopard? - djphatjive, on 10/16/2008, -2/+5Alright, I can install this, spend another day getting the wireless to work and then from then on boot into Vista untill the next Ubuntu comes out.
- kyelewis, on 10/16/2008, -0/+3@harisund... great- Low experienced user and early upgrading to a beta release don't exactly go together either well either.
