- tehhowch, on 08/15/2008, -2/+70As far as screenshot tours go, I'm disappointed.
- pckbeta, on 08/15/2008, -14/+71It's not really worth reading.
- Atsumori, on 08/15/2008, -3/+55I wish it looked like this - http://willwill100.deviantart.com/art/Interpid-Ibe ...
- lilSears, on 08/15/2008, -2/+33Can we please get rid of that dotted-line box on highlighted buttons that has been around since Windows 95 or before? It makes everything that could be high-tech look like cheap trash. I'm still waiting for a new non-ugly theme. That alone would bring people to linux rather than its actual capabilities.
- LZeppelinJ0, on 08/15/2008, -2/+19I can just picture the Art Team making a decision on the theme:
"Oooh I have an idea!! Brown. Make everything brown!" - nickert0n, on 08/15/2008, -7/+24P.S. I want to do the snorg tee's girls
- DocHoliday22, on 08/15/2008, -3/+20... because Ubuntu always looks the same...
- n1mnul, on 08/15/2008, -8/+24The same Ubuntu, the same Gnome. For years.
- alperea, on 08/15/2008, -5/+20Dugg for digging Linux.
- Ademan, on 08/15/2008, -2/+16Looks like straight up clearlooks with human colors. I'll take it over that dark brown turd from before...
- DocHoliday22, on 08/15/2008, -1/+14Ubuntu just looks the same as the previous versions. This is one distribution that has many artists doing concept work but nothing gets implemented. Other Distributions Suse and Fedora have polished their UI with every release.
- HonestAbe, on 08/15/2008, -1/+12You mean orange.
They really need to put the default theme up for a vote, and not have a tiny committee deciding it. - inactive, on 08/15/2008, -13/+24Dugg for Linux.
- Gumz, on 08/15/2008, -1/+11softpedia really needs to get lightbox2 setup for viewing screenshots.
- MarkFranklin, on 08/15/2008, -5/+15Dugg for Linux...
Call to all graphic designers!!!! Now is the time to unite and put forth your best efforts to make Ubuntu the most beautiful distro ever!! - mohrt, on 08/15/2008, -3/+12Wow, it looks like Ubuntu.
- ZippyV, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10Who is interested in a list of the latest applications? I can already run them on the current version. They should focus more on the kernel, drivers, system services and the graphical environment.
- wedderburn, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9well clearlooks, gnomes default theme has done away with the dotted-line box's and they look alot better :)
- jetskidude911, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9I'm glad to see they removed that black theme, but I do wish they would come out with a new theme.
- pHr34kY, on 08/15/2008, -3/+11...but she's got a NEW HAT!
- Maratonda, on 08/15/2008, -4/+12Anyone interested in what ubuntu DOES and will do better now? Or it's just the eye-candy you care about? Did Apple drug you or what?
- Ub3rg33k, on 08/15/2008, -0/+8Unless Canonical starts to do more radical changes, I think they can get off this 6 month release cycle. There's really no point. Just pass upgraded packages through Synaptic and maybe do a full release once a year when you have actually worked out some major improvements.
- TheWindBlows, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8Personally I am wondering how the Guest account works. If its intergrated with GNOME or Its possible to use it in a lightweight setup. (Such as LXDE installed on a Ubuntu terminal command line ) without a massive drain on resources.
Another point of interest is how they plan to accomplish making 8.10 faster if they will just be trimming and optimizing GNOME or if they plan to do more at the core of the OS. Making GNOME leaner and faster would indeed be nice but around the board improvements would be further appreciated. - TheWindBlows, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8Screenshot looks and real use appearance are two different things.
In a screen shot my desktop appearance probably doesn't look super omg appealing. Though in real use it has a clean feel to it.
Configuration:
Greenman-Murrine ( Its nice. )
Human ( It doesn't look so bad when its green and a good font is used.)
Clearlooks OSX (A combination of a whole range of icons that fit items quite well.)
oxy-white (pointer) - OCPaul, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7Is the same *****
- Stemp, on 08/15/2008, -7/+14It's not really worth commenting ?
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7Whatever happened to the "We can out-pretty Apple in two years". Right now it seems like you aren't even trying. But I agree that the last dark theme was a little bit too dark...
- wicketr, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7Why is this OS tour a tour of application upgrades as opposed to actual OS changes?
- cmost, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7I don't know whey these screenshot tours go up with every release. It doesn't look any different than the last release (or the one before that, or that...) Ubuntu is still stale, garish orange & brown and nothing significant changes other than the core packages that are available in all Linux distributions.
- taseedorf, on 08/15/2008, -2/+8The default theme in Ubuntu sucks. I won't lie. Everyone knows it too. This screenshot tour sucks as well. This looks exactly like Hardy Heron, basically, so a screen shot tour is pointless. Instead, they should focus on bug fixes and changes and explain those.
- HonestAbe, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7Anything but the orange Human theme.
- DivineMonkey, on 08/15/2008, -3/+9Looks like vanilla Ubuntu, why do they bother with these things?
- MWeather, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5Because a list of obscure new kernel features would not only be boring, it wouldn't be specific to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu just packages the OS, they don't write it. - inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5The only thing I miss since I'm using Adblock...
- Greg2k, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6It's not like Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution is lacking the eye candy power to pull off decent UIs, it's just that the themes themselves look like ***** most of the time. I love Compiz, but Human and all these other silly window decorations suck ass.
- wedderburn, on 08/15/2008, -2/+6ubuntu because bleeding edge includes your eyes :)
- Roger, on 08/15/2008, -1/+5I was gonna say the same thing.
It definitely contributes to an outdated look. - boltmasterzero, on 08/16/2008, -0/+4My desktop is based on that mockup right now.

If anyone wants links to themes / icons / wallpaper, just ask. - Jholder112233, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Wow, their UI department have been working overboard. They've managed to make it look exactly like last years. Bravo.
- John6000, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4They got no excuses, I've seen some good concepts being developed but are simply rejected.
- kd420, on 08/15/2008, -1/+4I think for Ubuntu, they keep it simple because anyone that wants a theme (assuming theres one they like) can install it, absolutely no hassle. If they changed it drastically, some would like it, some wouldn't and you'd pretty much have the same number of people changing their theme. I'm more concerned with what's inside the system (the stuff that I don't fully understand) because I can easily tweak any appearance flaws.
- KMartSheriff, on 08/15/2008, -6/+9A Linux distro that fails to deliver!? No way...
- SonicEarth, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3Install ubuntu, then install KDE from the package manager. Then you can boot into Gnome or KDE.
- melkore, on 08/15/2008, -2/+5There was only one developer for kubuntu last I knew. If you want it to work better then help out where you can.
I do like KDE more but Ubuntu/Gnome is a better environment currently. - LZeppelinJ0, on 08/15/2008, -1/+4Well it's a "screenshot" tour... If the eye-candy didn't matter we could just have an essay.
- RaulMuadDib, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3what is the theme?
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3I actually liked the Darker Black and Brown one better: - http://phorolinux.com/ubuntu-810-intrepid-ibex-alp ...
But Ubuntu (being "African")... people hated the Dark & Brown one and wanted it to be whiter, well here is the whiter one, and it looks *****. - ozid, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3most worthless screenshot tour in the history of screenshot tours.
- infiniphunk, on 08/15/2008, -1/+4I'm a linux die-hard and have been using it for about 5 years now. Been using Ubuntu for about 2. Appearance-wise, I see nothing new here. Buried.
- skeeterbug84, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2I looks the same as the current version. Why take screenshots?
