/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate ... instead. (You must add the link parts) - davidrools, on 01/14/2008, -3/+92Looks like the love child of Vista and OSX, raised by a south african community
- Pilot85, on 01/14/2008, -3/+90...Digg is for everything.
- P373Y, on 01/14/2008, -4/+69better than the crappy orange
- thtroyer, on 01/14/2008, -9/+46Hmm... while I don't use Ubuntu anymore, (I did for a year or so) I know that the devs tend to stay on the conservative edge of things. That's mostly why Ubuntu still looks about the same as it has since Dapper -- and there's nothing wrong with that. People come up with crazy ideas for each release -- some really good and some really bad, but none are ever used.
And I don't think it's the responsibility of the distro to overhaul the appearance with every release. It should certainly remain presentable and nice, but if you go and start radically changing the design every 6-months, you're going to start losing loyal members.
Ubuntu needs to do exactly what they've been doing. Keep the default theme presentable and modern. Leave the customization and theming to the users -- that's exactly how it should be. - drato, on 01/14/2008, -6/+43Okay, so:
1. As stated in the above comments, Digg is not the appropriate place to post arbitrary mock-ups for 8.04
2. Can we please cut the crap with all these mock-ups that obviously can't be done with GTK without major reworkings of the code? Just because you can draw it with Photoshop doesn't mean it can make a viable GTK theme. Stop treating it like that's the case.
3. I'll be interested when someone posts screenshots of themes that are actually _IN DEVELOPMENT_ and are actual candidates for 8.04. In the meantime stop blocking up the front page.
For the first time, I'm actually bothered enough to bury a story. - niallabrown, on 01/14/2008, -2/+36I have been saying all along not to go overboard because people can sometimes let things get out of hand and just plain ugly.... but this is georgus. If Ubuntu looked like this I think people would start to second guess if Windows is really a better os. People are visual creatures and they assume something with a nice cover is well made. Just look at this comment on the deviant art page "oh wow, that looks really cool. at the moment i'm using windows xp, but with an interface like this, i will maybe use buntu! Great Work!" If I was still using windows this would have captured my attention as well. Hope a light theme that is this awesome comes around, I know some people wont allow a dark one to be default.
- adriannome, on 01/14/2008, -27/+58damn man. thats the coolest mockup iv ever seen. have you made it as a theam yo ubuntu 7.10? id love tu have it on my computer.
- sin2051, on 01/14/2008, -16/+45Absolutely awful. And are we trying to rip off OS X or come up with something new?
- willwill100, on 01/14/2008, -1/+27agreed, it wasnt meant to be a skin but rather a suggestion of how it could possibly look in the future (im guessing most computers will be able the deal with compiz easily) and of course, you're right natilus can't look like that, but who says things cant change (except the devs lol)
- Ansible, on 01/14/2008, -1/+20Looks nice. I hope that ubuntu doesn't adopt the 'My Computer' thing though. That's so microsoft.
- jdhore1, on 01/14/2008, -3/+22That looks amazing except that on a lot of systems, Compiz is not going to be on by default so no AWN and I know of no way to get nautilus to look like the one you mocked up there...
- keyo, on 01/14/2008, -6/+24Looks tacky, window decorations look like those ***** windows xp skins.
- willwill100, on 01/14/2008, -2/+18Please see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alt ...
- willwill100, on 01/14/2008, -2/+16fair point, however from the point of view of someone considering using ubuntu you can't deny a sleeker design isnt going to do any harm. i really think its time the devs took the design seriously and took it to the next level i.e something that looks at least reasonable to the eye if nothing else
- EXreaction, on 01/14/2008, -0/+13No, I think the next audience wants all of their hardware to either work like it should immediately, or, at the very least, have a simple installable package that sets everything up with a easy to use GUI.
People don't want to spend hours trying to get their native monitor resolution to work, or their wireless cards, or their (more than 3 button) mouse. - willwill100, on 01/14/2008, -2/+15what i have in 7.10 is similar, but i that mock up includes a few changes which i guess aren't possible in 7.10, sorry.
- solidus636, on 01/14/2008, -2/+14Absolutely gorgeous! The file browser (nautilus) looks amazing! Too bad it's only a mock-up.
- Kyderdog, on 01/14/2008, -2/+14Only if Vista Raped OS X
- TacticalPenguin, on 01/14/2008, -3/+158.04 is the time to start change. Ubuntu has been simple and clean and simple and clean is good, but the next audience of linux wants good looks, and this can help. If there's a poll for 8.04's theme, this definitely will get my vote.
- chetanthaker, on 01/14/2008, -1/+13Too dark = Vista
Too bright = MacOS
Where can we take Ubuntu ??
I'm sure most of us have had it with the Orange in Ubuntu ! - stoanhart, on 01/14/2008, -0/+11Agreed.
This is why I never like these mock-ups, especially when they are misleadingly labeled "Ubuntu 8.04 mockup." This is more than just a theme, this is a complete UI re-write of some core GNOME apps. Therefore, doing this could never be a Ubuntu decision, since they don't decide which direction GNOME goes.
Also, dark themes always look great in mockups because the author gets to choose the contents of the windows. However, in real life, dark themes are often hard on the eyes because many websites and programs have light contents.
Finally, the icons in AWN are mostly Mac and MS icons, so those definitely won't be in any Ubuntu by default. Ever. - JoeB4ever, on 01/14/2008, -0/+11Just thought I'd let you know I buried your post.
- kreatre2007, on 01/14/2008, -7/+18It's not very original. That dock on the bottom looks just like Mac OS X v. 10.5. I'm a little disappointed that the designer couldn't come up with a more original concept.
- NOFXY, on 01/14/2008, -0/+9here you go http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install-avant-wind ...
- Giga, on 01/14/2008, -1/+10I'll settle for a spell checker.
- muniak, on 01/14/2008, -0/+9It's called Avant Window Navigator it's already available and I have known about it for about a year, I'm not sure how much older it is. It's for people that use linux and would like that look rather than the typical gnome dock. It's not about copying it's about choice.
- se1zure, on 01/14/2008, -6/+15not sure why he's being dugg down, the dock is such a blatant rip off of osx's new dock it's not even funny.
it's one thing when you create a design inspired by something, but to completely rip not only a feature,e but the shape, concept, and style of it is called being a bad designer. - RaiKitsune, on 01/14/2008, -1/+10The dock has existed in OSes before they have done in Linux of MacOSX, so Linux copying Mac isn't an accurate statement.
- jake6730, on 01/14/2008, -2/+11very cool nautilus, but the window decoration is just stupidly ugly
- nizzy1115, on 01/14/2008, -10/+18That is the best looking OS i have ever seen.
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -1/+8EPIC FAIL #2
- schestowitz, on 01/14/2008, -13/+20This looks brilliant. Be aware that many people (I'm not one of them) loathe dark themes, which is why they are rarely made default.
- nizzy1115, on 01/14/2008, -1/+8you still suck
- expert01, on 01/14/2008, -3/+9it lets me search my music library on linux, and doesn't suck at playback.
- rawheadrex, on 01/14/2008, -3/+9You mean Deviantart is not the appropriate place to contribute? As this is a story on Digg of a submission to Deviantart?
- etandrib, on 01/14/2008, -4/+10Have you seen OSX? This is taken pretty much straight from it.
- andycr512, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Gelatin isn't a mockup, I use it sometimes.
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Because idiots like to change the Open Office Apps to look like office. ***** knows why.
- Irco, on 01/14/2008, -5/+10Amarok.
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5You already have ubuntu.
- jackhynes, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5The dock is Avant Window Navigator and it's been around on Linux for a little while.
- bob12321, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6I noticed that your icon is the Ubuntu logo.
- MasterRex, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6You're shallow.
- eldridgea, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Why are all the icons of Microsoft Office for OS X?
- Smwbigboss, on 01/14/2008, -4/+9It looks more like a theme for OSX than Gnome. Dugg anyway, it looks really nice.
- specialK16, on 01/14/2008, -3/+8Get a brain.
- nizzy1115, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6your desktop background looks like a google page that can't be displayed? thats pretty boring if you ask me...
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -1/+6Yes. Because Apple invented that dock. (COUGH PROJECT LOOKING GLASS)
- ours, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5"That dock on the bottom looks just like Mac OS X "
Which they borrowed from NeXt etc... And tab windows as we know them where borrowed from Microsoft...
See a pattern? Everybody borrows from everybody else. Get used to it and be happy that the good stuff goes around. -
