- canthraxp, on 02/23/2008, -1/+201Let me pre-answer:
-No, Heron is a bird (go to wikipedia), the drug is "heroin".
-It won't be Hungry Hippo, sorry.
-Yes, it's a stupid name, but it's not the release name, the real name is "Ubuntu 8.04".
-Why it's 8.04 and the last was 7.10?, because of "200(8)", April (04) = 8.04
-If you don't like human theme, change it. There's plenty stuff on gnome/kde look, and gnome art.
-It may play doom through wine, and it doesn't blend (unless it's on a CD/DVD).
-yes, ***** the RIAA. - Demistate, on 02/23/2008, -4/+81You know I liked Digg better when the front page was filled with Ubuntu and OS X news articles. Enough with the Obama/Clinton stories.
Dugg - ataylor32, on 02/23/2008, -0/+48It's scheduled to be released on April 24th
- jamezracer, on 02/23/2008, -2/+42YES!! we are getting close guys, Hardy is just around the corner :)
- armo, on 02/23/2008, -0/+24Its been put back to Intrepid. Bit of a pity but kind of sensible not to have a brand new theme for a LTS release.
- bigsteve, on 02/23/2008, -0/+20There are Linux-native binaries for a number of versions of Doom. No wine needed. Otherwise, good assessment.
- bigsteve, on 02/23/2008, -7/+27Dear everyone who comments with "Is ___ fixed yet?" or "Is [some feature that's actually fine] still ***** up / broken / slow / sucks?"
Please submit a bug report to the appropriate team, or STFU and GTFH.
You remind me of the users who pester the hell out of my poor helpdesk team at work. "Dear helpdesk. There's something wrong with a few of the computers in development. TY" What the ***** do you hope to accomplish besides making yourself look foolish? You want to use the open source product, in this case Ubuntu Linux, but you don't want to give anything back. I realize not everyone's a coder, but you can help by testing your setup, and visiting the forums to hash out a problem before getting on some thread and posting FUD. Gee, I'm so sorry the unpaid hobbyist programmers that brought you this fine product couldn't deliver something that works out of the box on 100% of all hardware setups. If after all of your trouble there's a real honest-to-god bug, well guess what! You just contributed a great deal of assistance to making a good product even better. It'll get fixed per the project's leaders' priority, and you'll have that much more of a usable product.
Gah. - inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+19Well, all my questions are answered!
- suprxtragrav, on 12/09/2008, -0/+19False.
8.04 means APRIL 2008. - jdhore1, on 02/23/2008, -0/+18I've been using the Firefox nightlies and on my Gutsy box, they're just as stable (if not moreso) then Firefox 2.x
- Aeuta, on 02/23/2008, -3/+16LTS releases are meant to be super-stable they are the opposite of being a major Windows release. Spending time on a default theme doesn't really make much sense. And yes everyone changes theres pretty quickly...it would have probably turned out orange and brown anyway...
- GMorgan, on 02/23/2008, -1/+13That's unfair, Windows is always in alpha.
- Evolutuon, on 02/23/2008, -2/+14Intrepid Ibex!
- motang, on 02/23/2008, -1/+11Here are the screen shots: http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opensource/linux/sc ...
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+10Dear makers of XFCE please make it include a network browser, thanks
- Carburetor, on 02/23/2008, -0/+10Since that's alpha, there's nothing wrong releasing it with other alpha/beta releases.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+10The NVIDIA drivers are in the repositories and can be easily installed through the Restricted Drivers Manager.
- jdhore1, on 02/23/2008, -0/+9Also, don't forget, Firefox 3 will probably be RC1 or RC2 by the time Hardy comes out...Beta 4 is hitting late this month or early next month and RC1 should be hitting 2 weeks to a month after that.
- darkNiGHTS, on 02/23/2008, -1/+10So you mean Ubuntu 9.04 is right around the corner?
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+9..I like the name... it fits with the fact LTS release for Ubuntu. And that Ubuntu and Linux is growing stronger and stronger.
- Acglaphotis, on 02/24/2008, -0/+8You speak the truth.
- MrSpontaneous, on 02/23/2008, -1/+9The fact that you included RPM distributions on that list speaks volumes as to it's inaccuracy.
- Kingoftherings, on 02/23/2008, -1/+9Didn't Dapper Drake have a new theme, and it was an LTS?
I'm not sure because I never used 5.10. - geoken, on 02/23/2008, -0/+8So did the whole 'new theme' thing get dropped or is it something that's still planned to be included in the actual release?
- secrity, on 02/23/2008, -0/+8Firefox 3 is in the Hardy betas
- PrometheusZero, on 02/23/2008, -1/+9Just curious; do they release 8.04 at the start of April or sometime during April?
- T8erT0T, on 02/23/2008, -4/+11Wubi looks damn spiffy.
- socomoddjob, on 02/23/2008, -0/+7Ill wait for the final version, im not in the mood to fix things.
- phinn, on 02/23/2008, -0/+7Yes of course, almost all NVIDIA cards are very well supported. If your want the official drivers use as suggested above.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+7No, Firefox 3 Beta 3 comes default with Hardy.
- andycr512, on 02/23/2008, -0/+6It has a number, 8.04. If you don't like the name, it's easy to just ignore it - there are very very few places in the OS itself where it gives the "animal name".
- phinn, on 02/23/2008, -0/+6It's in the betas, and your right FF2 has always been crappy in Linux. FF3 is WAAAY better.
Even if its not though, its easy enough to download on firefox's site because the repositories are always way behind in everything. - pgquiles, on 02/23/2008, -3/+9Yet bug #107326 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+source/pa ... which causes loss of data, remains unfixed.
- andycr512, on 02/23/2008, -0/+6I should note that once the official 8.04 release is out, the update manager should pick it up by itself without the -d option (the -d is to enable development releases to be selected for upgrades).
- phinn, on 02/23/2008, -0/+6I used Fusesmb and it works nicely. But yea a built-in network browser would be better
- GMorgan, on 02/23/2008, -0/+6Not a problem. Firefox is a special package that gets upgraded throughout the release. In essence they won't freeze Firefox 3 in a beta stage.
- muniak, on 02/23/2008, -1/+6You're so hardcore, I can't believe you use the command line.
- reazal, on 02/23/2008, -1/+6I really wish Hardy Heron will come with nice typography. The default font size is too big for 1024x768 user like me, and I found it strange when first time I tasted the juice of Ubuntu.
- DiggLive, on 02/23/2008, -6/+11http://i29.tinypic.com/1zbvr48.jpg
Oops, wrong Hardy. - bieber, on 02/23/2008, -0/+5Great Blue Herons, Tricolored Herons, and probably at least a couple other Heron species I can't think of off the top of my head aren't white...
- Darkhacker, on 02/23/2008, -0/+4Incorrect. Ubuntu 8.04 is an LTS release. Kubuntu 8.04 however is not because of KDE 4.
- amadman, on 02/24/2008, -0/+4...even the Ron Paul stories were better!
- RobotBuddha, on 02/23/2008, -0/+4I hope they're not using coders to do an artists work.
- plethorex, on 02/23/2008, -4/+8Ok, does this release support the 8800 GT? I'd love to try Ubuntu, but I can't because my video card isn't supported.
- bgovern, on 02/23/2008, -1/+4Hopefully the bug that prevents Broadcom cards from connecting automatically to WPA protected wireless access points is fixed in this one. Having to manually edit config files every time I switched offices is not a plan for success.
- bigsteve, on 02/23/2008, -1/+4Did you submit a bug report specific to your setup to assist the ndiswrapper team, or did you just hope they magically knew something was wrong and fixed it?
- neonpulse, on 02/24/2008, -0/+3Doom through Wine? You can play Doom natively!
- pgquiles, on 02/23/2008, -0/+3It is present on 32-bit machines. It will only hit you if you have a > 2TB data partition, which is increasingly usual, at least in servers. Given that Hardy is a 5-year support release, this bug will become a critical issue very soon.
- aelias, on 02/23/2008, -0/+3If it supports Sigmatel AC97 sound cards, I'm in. Gutsy gives me a blank stare when I tell it to use my sound card.
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -1/+4Dude, this doesn't even have to do with the article.
