- HHP2K, on 01/03/2008, -11/+93Why is it that every single design for Hoary has to be so dark!?
Doesn't anybody remember the brightness rule in design? Did someone decide to just collectively throw that one out the window?
All of these dark themes are depressing and give the system a rather heavy feel to it. Bright schemes with mature, sophisticated colors and functional, aesthetically pleasing design is the way to go - not dark! - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -10/+53wow that is beautiful you should submit it here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alt ... - neowip, on 01/03/2008, -15/+57nice, starting to look good
- Yokabi, on 01/03/2008, -27/+57This mockup is way better than the one currently on front page http://digg.com/linux_unix/Gelatin_Ubuntu_8_04_the ...
- TheWiseNoob, on 01/03/2008, -8/+33Looks good, but it is too dark for me. Good luck, though.
- jasz, on 01/03/2008, -3/+28And the Union theme in the same thread is even better...

Question: every time someone comes up with a new Ubuntu theme idea, does it really need to make it to the front page?
I mean, I'm an Ubuntu fan, it's my favorite distro, but what the hell...
"gee! look! a new Ubuntu Icon!"
"gee! look! a new Ubuntu wallpaper!"
"gee! look! a new Ubuntu !" - Betrayer, on 01/03/2008, -29/+54WTF!. we are now digging walpapers and desktop colors from a blogger?
Buried as CRAP! - chris9902, on 01/03/2008, -33/+52disgusting as always. They really need to move away from brown and orange. It's such a horrible colour pallet to work with.
- srg13, on 01/03/2008, -0/+15You must be a really good programmer if you can write a device driver as easily as clicking System -> Appearance and then clicking one of the 15 or so themes in the box...
- ariez84, on 01/03/2008, -2/+15God forbid you like something Vista has!
- MattDavis, on 01/03/2008, -12/+25I dugg it, but it's basically a reddish brown Vista. (Not that that's bad, just saying.)
... and yah, it beats the tar out of the Gelatin theme. - Giga, on 01/03/2008, -1/+13Funny, I don't notice any resemblance.
- heavyd14, on 01/03/2008, -2/+14They plan on doing so, but nobody seems to understand that.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -6/+17Too much black, looks like drying/dried blood. Otherwise, not bad.
- mossblaser, on 01/03/2008, -2/+13Yeh, unfortunately stuff that is glossy now is "vista" like etc etc. which is a shame as I like glossy stuff (since back when only the KDE guys seemed to...), either way, I am sure it can be made more original by someone with more artistic flare than me...
- trogdoor, on 01/03/2008, -0/+11Doesn't mean we can't criticize certain options that we think look like crap.
- Nimphious, on 01/03/2008, -3/+13What is it that makes you assume he's a blogger?
Buried for ignorance. - RaiKitsune, on 01/03/2008, -1/+11Its actually easier to change theme on Ubuntu than Windows - and thats in a parallel universe where Windows doesn't need a hacked .dll to use something other than that childish blue.
- mossblaser, on 01/03/2008, -3/+13For the record, I am not a blogger...
- canman888, on 01/03/2008, -2/+11gawd dang it, that's FUGLY, no no no, my eyes hurt!
- mooninite, on 01/03/2008, -7/+161. Make the arrows in the menus smaller. They're too big.
2. The minimize/maximize/close buttons are nasty and plain. If you're doing gradients everywhere, make them boxes with gradients so they look 3D.
3. Use the Tango icons... - RaiKitsune, on 01/03/2008, -1/+10So I should buy/pirate something thats adds alot of bloat and bugs to accomplish something that should be done anyway?
This is a perfect example of why I left Windows. - gaoshan, on 01/03/2008, -2/+10Digg me down "Using the word fanboy" fanboys but can we retire that insult for 2008?
- eclectro, on 01/03/2008, -2/+10As others have noted in this thread (and have been downmodded for their honesty) red is a psychologically uncomfortable color. There really is a 'color ergonomics' that ubuntu seems to fail to grasp.
- gordmoo, on 01/03/2008, -1/+9it just looks like normal ubuntu dipped in blood
- warriorscot, on 01/03/2008, -1/+9Personally I like the darker themes the lighter ones tend to go for my eyes faster at the moment all my ubuntu machines are running dark themes with lots of transparency and a hint of blue in their, but the nice thing is if you like the style of windows you can always keep that and change the colour scheme pretty easily. it is part of the reason I like linux you don't have to have the same as everyone else just adjust it to suit yourself I certainly don't know many long time linux users that use the same desktop themes.
- Andrewmatt, on 01/03/2008, -4/+12Buried!! I'm using Ubuntu right now, but I dont want my eyes to bleed.
- eclectro, on 01/03/2008, -0/+8codename for the next Ubuntu release: redrum
- ostracize, on 01/03/2008, -0/+8Question: every time someone comes up with a new Ubuntu theme idea, does it really need to make it to the front page?
Answer: If it looks good, why the hell not? - ours, on 01/03/2008, -1/+8It's a bit aggressive I would say.
- Wilson, on 01/03/2008, -0/+7Hi! I'm a Tooltip!
- sixthree, on 01/03/2008, -23/+30Stop posting Ubuntu GUIs.
- Skod, on 01/03/2008, -1/+8Like others, light is a bit too much for my eyes during computing hours (ie. early morning). Unfortunately, the entire internet seems to be designed with "Light" in mind and all of these GUI schemes use dark text, light background nonsense. Use the light for the information, dont waste my retinal cells on backdrops.
- NeoRicen, on 01/03/2008, -3/+10Not bad, I like the notification box.
- Mejogid, on 01/03/2008, -0/+7If by "a mix of Leopard and Vista" you mean "it's shiny", then yes - I guess it is. Interestingly, glass was exhibiting this quality thousands of years before either of these operating systems so I'd hardly say it's copying them. Oh, and being a completely different colour's a pretty significant difference IMHO.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -3/+9I like it.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -1/+7You must be a moron.
- Scheissen, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6there's not enough contrast between orange and brown
And can we please stop using glass buttons? - mossblaser, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6Yeh - i agree - personally I'd like it in blue (and with a quick mockup changing it all over to blue it did look good but the Ubuntu people would not be at all likley accept it).
- PhrosTT, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5u know u could use the reply button.
- johnnysaucepn, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5Yes, and remember folks, open source is the only way to get 'options'!
- trogdoor, on 01/03/2008, -2/+7No, it's not.
- cslawren, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5your mother is calling for you to get off the internet, she needs the telephone line.
- mihkeltt, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6i am no linux user, but the red gradient on a grey background looks really cheap.
- disappointed, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5That applies to paper, not screens. Staring at a screen is like staring at a lightbulb, so you want it to be as dark as possible. I've never seen anything better than the old '80s green-(or orange)-on-black. Could look at that all day.
- andycr512, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5Eclectro: Sorry, we simply -cannot- target people -that- darned dumb with computers. Ubuntu is -not- going to become another Linspire.
(PS: If they're that terrible at using computers, do you really think they care about the theme?) - latova, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5I wasn't aware Apple and Vista owned rights to making things look shiny.. We better hide the sun, we don't want it being sued.
- johnnysaucepn, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5It's contrast - it helps to reduce the amount of work your eye has to do. It's the same reason that most paper is white, and most pens are black or dark blue.
- cornflakepirate, on 01/03/2008, -2/+6I like the idea, but it's way too intense. I can't look at it for more than 10 seconds.
- insllvn, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4No, Betrayer. What he was trying to tell you was to please, ignore the stories you don't think are interesting. Don't come into the comment thread and bitch about them. You know how much you don't care about a theme change for Ubuntu? That is peanuts, nay acne on some bacterium's *****, to the vast abyss that is my lack of caring about how sick you are of other peoples interests. Imagine the cold, icy depths of my soul where all human compassion is drowned out by the palpable wail of other worldly terrors, for it is here that my interest in your opinions went to die you self absorbed whiny prick. In the cold endless reaches of empty space there is more thought, more caring wasted on the mental deformity that brought you here to bitch and moan about how "I amn't interested! lolz!" The thing is, we are trying to ask you very nicely to adjust your profile settings and GO THE ***** AWAY. Don't waste your time or effort to tell us how you feel about the story, never mind returning scant hours later to correct those you feel have misinterpreted you perfect vision of digg's glorious future.
"soon you will learn DIGG is a place for people (with different views) to discuss stupid subjects like the colors of your desktop."
Exactly. Digg is the place where, as you so cunningly observed, we come to talk about things EXACTLY LIKE THIS ARTICLE. Don't pretend for a second that we are just the knaves and ignorant rabble who don't "get" what you are trying to say or do here. You didn't come in here to add value to the discussion, you came in to put down the author, and the opinions of those who are interested. Piss off. -
