- cagrino, on 01/24/2009, -4/+90You know your Friday night took a wrong turn somewhere when you're up at 4 AM commenting on an Ubuntu article...
- Stonekeeper, on 01/24/2009, -0/+26Actually, it's so the next-few-years being LTS and all...
- theaceoffire, on 01/24/2009, -0/+24We're just two wild and crazy guys!
- kurtiscaston, on 01/24/2009, -8/+26Great to see Linux moving along. One day I dream of finally making the full switch!
- grungegbunny, on 01/24/2009, -2/+19What's stopping ya?
- theaceoffire, on 01/24/2009, -0/+15I played WoW, and a couple of other games... Most didn't work in Linux, but WoW worked *better* in wine than it did in XP on my machine.
Keep an eye open! If/When Wine supports your game, sometimes it works better since it doesn't have to drag an entire Windows OS with it. - Cheehos, on 01/24/2009, -0/+15I made the conversion 2 days ago to Ubuntu with a 4 gig partition (just trying it out, guys. When I get my new machine, this one will be completely Tux-ed).
I have no experience whatsoever with this software, but I'm having a great time. It was very easy to do (even from a layman's perspective), and I'd certainly point my tech-savvy friends in the same direction.
Anyway, Digg, do any of you guys have some noob tips for me? I'd love to have some assistance from a crowd much less ignorant than myself!
-Cheehos - Mejogid, on 01/24/2009, -0/+12@directrix13
They didn't mess up the graphics, it's in development and there are obviously going to be bugs immediately after the introduction of a new Xorg server and kernel. Seriously, don't make judgements about what works and doesn't with an *alpha*, it's there for developers to prepare for the release, people to help debug development apps and for interested users to get an idea about what's coming up. It's not released yet for a reason. - Kabloink, on 01/24/2009, -0/+12LTS is the reason. People may want to use it as a server or some other application where the longer support is preferable over the latest software versions.
- djauto23, on 01/24/2009, -1/+11Just hoping that they get that Intel GM965 graphics controller bug working before 9.04:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver- ... - Ophie, on 01/24/2009, -0/+10Dugg, because i can.
- courtjester555, on 01/24/2009, -1/+11Not if you're also *****
- tuxisawesome, on 01/24/2009, -1/+9lol
- KaiUno, on 01/24/2009, -4/+12Lack of games is what does it for me. And I can't be arsed to dual-boot.
- th3j0k3r, on 01/25/2009, -0/+8bootcamp = intel mac
g3 = powerpc, not intel.
Debian supports the g3 stuff as well.
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r6/powerpc ... - Mejogid, on 01/24/2009, -0/+7Good to hear of your success. In terms of tips and things to look around with, I'd recommend:
* Getting to know the command line better - this makes scripting possible and many tasks far quicker
* Getting involved in the ubuntuforums - there's lots of smart and helpful people round there, and quite a few interesting little projects just starting up (feel free to PM me under the name mejy if you have any more specific questions)
* Giving gnome-do a go - it's a great little productivity enhancing app
* Give us a list of things that Windows can do for you that Ubuntu can't that are stopping you moving over, and give a few key apps a go in Wine - BIOHazard87, on 01/24/2009, -1/+7Game compatibility obviously. Wine does not work that great for a lot of games. Actually most games I play. Also I seem to experience faster performance in Windows and in general enjoy the experience more.
Also, lack of hardware support. Not Linux's fault per sey, but still, its a problem regardless of whose fault it is. onboard audio on my laptop has lots of trouble with audio and its just not worth it.
I dugg the article to support Ubuntu / Open source in general :) - Myztry, on 01/24/2009, -1/+7Just install it with virtualbox if there is any doubt. If it tastes good, give it it's own plate.
I've done the same with Win7 (Which by the way runs better under virtual box under Vista - then Vista itself - strangely enough). I didn't trust Win7 (beta or not) not to foobar the MBR as is tradition with Microsoft.
Delete the VM image and your machine is clean again regardless or whether it's Windows, Linux or whatever. Dedicating hardware is an option. Not a must. - zer0mass, on 01/24/2009, -0/+6Year of release (8) . Month of release (04) . Major Updates (2)
Two releases a year not including the LTS updates. It's pretty stable and predictable. If you don't want to deal with that many updates then only focus on the LTS versions which have on going support for years. When an update like this comes along you just click update when you get the popup take about 10 minutes of your time plus a reboot and your done. Windows does not have such an easy and stable upgrade path. - fluxion, on 01/24/2009, -0/+5i generally don't even upgrade until an LTS release comes around, so this is as much news to me as any new Ubuntu release. also, Ubuntu has been taken up by a lot of Debian users, many of whom are used to much less frequest, much more stable releases, and dont really care for the testing/experimental releases, which are what non-LTS releases of Ubuntu basically amount to.
also, if you've ever had a non-LTS release fall out of its support cycle because you don't run a system where re-installing the OS or doing a distro upgrade every 6 months isnt very convenient, and had Canonical pull all the packages from the repository so that you're so dead in the water you no longer even have the option to run the upgrade (cuz you're missing some required packages), you might choose to stick with LTS releases. (happened to me with feisty a couple months back....feisty is only like 2 years old! ive had slackware/debian boxes i didnt upgrade for over 5 years! (not counting individual kernels/packages)) - courtjester555, on 01/24/2009, -1/+6Have you ever actually used the 8.10 LiveCD (or even the 7.10 and 7.04)? I wouldn't call them buggy by any means, except for cases where the hardware forces you to use the alternate installer.
Even the 9.04 alpha LiveCD is in pretty good shape - Sealbhach, on 01/24/2009, -0/+4This is hepful:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/
Also, try some new skins:
http://www.techiesouls.com/2008/11/27/collection-o ... - picpak, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4After you run all the updates, you do have it.
- captainstumpy, on 01/24/2009, -0/+4The key term is 'LTS' (Long Term Support). That means 8.40 will be the solid distro they support for the next 3 years or so, regardless of what the 'current' version is. The LTS version is ideal for server and similar environments where stability is a key factor, not cutting-edge new features.
- tigertee, on 01/24/2009, -0/+4is it possible to run linux on an old mac? i picked up a g3 and would be curious to know :)
- leexy, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4Yes!
- revslaughter, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4run an update, you'll probably find it =+)
- greywolfexcel, on 01/24/2009, -2/+6Steam.
- seanmc303, on 01/25/2009, -1/+4My advice is dual boot. I found as I got more comfortable with Linux I booted to Windows less. The only reason that I boot to Windows now is if I want to play a game. Everything else, I want to do can be done with Linux.
- Renton, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3Expand your partition, open the Add/Remove Programs tool, then go crazy installing programs that interest you. There are thousands of them and they're all free.
- powatom, on 01/24/2009, -0/+3Don't like it, don't Digg it. Easy.
- Renton, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3Windows 7 did get rid of GRUB, but all you have to do is put in an Ubuntu live CD and follow these instructions:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351 - GreatSunJester, on 01/24/2009, -0/+3I'll call it buggy and also say 8.10 needs a .1 release. I wipe and reinstall a lot, have done so for many years. 8.04 installed perfectly and ran fine. 8.10 refuses to see my network devices. These are the devices that have worked perfectly for every other Ubuntu I have tried. Searching for this issue I find that I am not alone. So, a release that contains a networking show-stopper SHOULD be updated with a correction.
- Garciat, on 01/24/2009, -1/+4and it's free.
- picpak, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3I wish I had known about this before I downgraded to 8.04 a couple days ago.
- rogue780, on 01/24/2009, -2/+4Battlefield 2142, Audible (new version doesn't work with WINE due to SSL problem), Spore (People say it works...can't get it to even install), Supreme Commander...well GAMES.
- theaceoffire, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2It is the version of Ubuntu designed for Cows, also known as "Umoontoo".
You should also try Gentoo and OopenSuse if you are beef inclined. - directrix13, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2Its not working so far on my machine.
- theaceoffire, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2O.o Of *COURSE* 8.10 is the latest. The whole point of LTS is to have a version that only gets security fixes, for businesses that don't want to upgrade twice a year.
The rest of your rant seems to be "Ubuntu hates developers", which I don't agree with.
Also, if they design the OS to be so easy anyone can use it (AKA, the home market), how does that hurt it for business use? - Kingoftherings, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2I don't think Ubuntu supports ppc anymore, but I'm sure Fedora still does.
- stenhard, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2This is a good starting point:
http://www.penguinppc.org/
It will give you a list of distributions and the platforms on which they run. There is also a link to the NetBSD Open Firmware FAQ. Also, Google for info on resetting PRAM, Open Firmware "magic key sequences" and such. If this is your first venture into old Mac hardware it will be good info to know.
The only things I can think of right off that I had to work through were:
1). Not recognizing multi-processor machine (easy to fix, but shouldn't be a problem on your G3).
2). Booting and running from a SCSI drive attached to a PCI SCSI controller (this seems to have been a popular add-on on Bondi Blue G3s, so this may well affect you!).
3). Getting 1440x900 to run well took a bit of experimentation with xorg.conf
Other than that, use the forums, use Google, and good luck! - inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2Ignore the command line comments from these fools. You can do just about anything without opening that terminal.
In the gaming section, I'd recommend
Armagetron Advanced
Super Tuxkart
Gccg (if you like CCG's)
The Mana World or Planeshift (depends if you like 2d or 3d RPG)
Legends (Tribes Clone)
All the usual Quakes :)
No matter where you download Flash from, it's gonna suck balls.
If you need a shockwave plugin use Crossover Office to install it. You'll need to use an older version as the current version broke the plugin. - RaulMuadDib, on 01/24/2009, -1/+3Just hoping that they get that Intel GM965 graphics controller bug webpage working before 9.04:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserverx ... - solraith, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2Yellow Dog Linux used to support PPC; not sure if it still does. Give it a shot: http://us.fixstars.com/products/ydl/
- thedragon4453, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2There's a lot of stuff. My steps usually go something like this:
1. Enable restricted repositories. http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources.php
2. Install preload. Open a terminal by going to Applications > Accessories > Terminal and type in "sudo apt-get install preload". This is a bit like prefetching in windows, and if you've got a decent system the performance boost is nice.
3. Install restricted codecs for mp3s and video files. Go to Applications > Add/remove programs. Click "Show" and select all. Search for gstreamer. Check all the plugin boxes and apply. (you can remove stuff you don't want by clearing check boxes and hitting apply. Adding and removing pretty much everything is that easy.)
4. Learn the terminal. You don't have to, but most of the stuff above could be done in a single terminal command instead of click, click, click.
5. Feel free to customize. Check out http://www.gnome-look.org.
6. Never, never type "sudo rm -rf /" unless you want to destroy your system.
7. Check out http://www.linuxalt.com/ to find FOSS (free open source software) alternatives to popular Windows/Mac software.
8. If you run into trouble, Google and http://www.ubuntuforums.org are your friend. Pretty much all common problems have solutions that aren't too tough to find. I've find that the forums are usually easy to get answers for as well.
If you run into trouble, you can contact me through my blog at http://www.charlesesmith.net. Oh! And poke around. Click everything. Most of the graphical stuff works exactly as you'd expect it.
small edit: If you do troubleshooting through the forums, you'll often be givnen terminal commands because thats the easiest way to solve stuff. Don't be afraid. I also highly encourage learning about what you are typing :) - DontThinkSo, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2Frozen Bubble, Flobopuyo, and lbreakout are all great timewasters, available under add/remove programs. Also, at the top-right of add/remove programs, change the drop-down box to "All available applications" to add a huge list of software.
Another good game is Battle for Wesnoth, but it's a little more in-depth than the previous three.
Also, if you wish to run Windows Apps, I would recommend getting a more up-to-date version of wine. You can add an updated repository by following the instructions at winehq.org.
In case you aren't aware, software in Ubuntu is held in centralized repositories, meaning they'll update with your system whenever they're updated "upstream". You can add repositories as you find them, if you want the leading-edge bleeding software.
Also, for the love of God, don't install flash from adobe's website. Use synaptic, or this link:
apt:flashplugin-nonfree - BIOHazard87, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2Wanted to mention theres Cedega too, but that costs money and STILL doesn't work that great for a lot of games.
- pHreaksYcle, on 01/26/2009, -1/+3Okay guys, we're cool for burying someone for their opinion.
But you are an *****, buddy. wrong place, wrong time. - pHreaksYcle, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Ubuntu is the buggiest piece of ***** I have ever used, but read on, there's more!
I STILL LIKE IT MORE THAN WINDOWS!
What does that tell you? - factotum218, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2Yep. Anyone that is offering a ppc port is right up your alley.
