- tapo, on 07/05/2008, -0/+49If you're running Ubuntu 8.04 and have been patching regularly, you already have this. No need to download the ISO!
Only thing I've noticed so far is the magical detection of my Laptop's bluetooth support (I didn't care before) and a Bluetooth utility running in my system tray. - mcnasby, on 07/05/2008, -4/+288.04 has made me a believer. Up until this update, I was considering reinstalling Windows on my laptop. For me, 8.04 is solid as a rock. Now, I almost rather use Ubuntu over OSX. My girlfriend, that was forced to use Gutsy for over a year (thanks to her loving boyfriend!) is now considering forgoing a Macbook for Linux. What a beautiful thing.
- serenityflexed, on 07/04/2008, -0/+15It's mostly bugfixes and security updates. It's in the description and in the release number.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/05/2008, -0/+14Damn pirates. You can pretend this is all legal but we all know, somewhere buried in the livecd, is a stolen Metallica track. You are getting clever though, 600mb just for one song ;)
- Chase, on 07/05/2008, -10/+23Ubuntu is the best Linux distro for sure. Can't wait to get this myself!
- limaunion, on 07/05/2008, -1/+13They should consider hiring a full professional graphic designers team...!
- nanostream, on 07/03/2008, -7/+19Aww you beat me to it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/52895259@N00/26344674 ...
Good job nonetheless...
If for some odd reason anyone chooses not use bitttorrent (save for isp drama), please download iso's from the main site instead - it will take the load of the main servers:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download - samurimaster, on 07/05/2008, -0/+11You would have to ask Adobe about that.
- leejarratt, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10This is because you have enabled the proposed updates in the Software Sources.
- GeorgeStone2, on 07/05/2008, -3/+13Not a single pretentious linux ***** telling this guy that KDE is how linux should be viewed.
Then not a single even more pretentious linux ***** telling that user, that he should not even be using a desktop enviroment and that all linux using should involve typing in commands.
Maybe Linux really is changing. - ginsu, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10If you need any help with Ubuntu I recommend http://ubuntuforums.org
- Woknblues, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9I'll take you comment a bit further and say that ubuntu-forums are as good as it gets in terms of support for any operating system, bar none. You will likely get 6 responses in about 5 minutes, and they do not tolerate "google it" or "noob" responses from anyone. ubuntu forums are the standard that all forums should hold themselves to. Also, they are very thorough and well organized.
- Acglaphotis, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9Yeah, ubuntu-forums is as good as it gets in terms of support for linux, just ask for cool themes or something.
- mindracer, on 07/05/2008, -3/+11anyone know a guide or something to make ubuntu prettier for a newbie? the operating system rocks, i just wish it was nicer like os x or windows, newbie like me doesnt know how to go in detail to make it much nicer with themes, etc
- GIFF3, on 07/05/2008, -0/+8oh so that's why that happened......
- pHreaksYcle, on 07/05/2008, -0/+8Professional Graphic Designer Team funded by: limaunion!
- benoitcsirois, on 07/04/2008, -0/+8Angers me how ISPs are killing great technologies like P2P!
Anyways, I just got an account with one of Montreal's very few non-throttling ISPs, electronicbox... I can't wait to use bitorrents again!! - 3leggedHorse, on 07/05/2008, -0/+8click system then prefs then appearance, then you can play around a bit. If you want more go to gnome look.org.
- Requench, on 07/05/2008, -1/+9I believe this version allows you to install Hardy on the PS3, I could be wrong though.
- zwaldowski, on 07/05/2008, -0/+8There were many early HAL and network config issues in the earliest Hardy release that was somehow fixed subsequently. 8.04.1 fixes some bugs with the live CD and Ubiquity (the installer system).
- zwaldowski, on 07/05/2008, -1/+9If you're sure your computer is 64-bit capable, it should be fine. Kubuntu bites, though. KDE support belongs in another distro, and Ubuntu is mostly focused on GNOME.
- pHreaksYcle, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7In fact, he is right. The way I always think about it is we're still working together for the Open Source thing. But if one sector should triumph with more users/popularity, there shouldn't be hard feelings, just help all the way, like we agreed in the beginning.
- pip182, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7It does have the firefox 3 final release, not the crappy beta 5.
- johnkelly84, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7I believe these are just updated disc images, as I have been running 8.04.1 for a while too, and I only use the standard repositories.
- zwaldowski, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7It's fixed okay enough... get Flash Player 10b2 otherwise.
- fuckingusername, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7just down loaded 64 bit version and out of the box it kick azz, has to be the fastest OS install I have ever encounter to date :)
dual boot OS XP and yes my favorite Linux Ubuntu ,, great works guys and gals!!!!
wow just amazing , out of the box this leaves windows in the dust .......... - HonoredMule, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7so does my apt-get upgrade
- pHreaksYcle, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6Actually, I'm an Ubuntu user and I didn't know this was out...which is why I check digg.
- goodinohio, on 07/05/2008, -2/+9This is great! Good bye Microsoft.
- michnaugh1, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6I removed the bottom panel and installed cairo-dock.
http://developer.berlios.de/projects/cairo-dock/
I find it to be much more similar to the OS X dock. - Lyk4n, on 07/05/2008, -1/+7It really is :)
- pHreaksYcle, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6No, there's plenty of you out there...how can you not like freedom? You can not CHOOSE it, no reason to dislike.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -1/+7Face the facts dude. Ubuntu is the only linux distro that has freaking chance of competing with Windows or OSX.
- eldridgea, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5A ton of good themes for Gnome (your Ubuntu window manager) are at http://gnome-look.org/.
- iofthestorm, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5I tried installing Kubuntu 8.04 64 bit on my laptop but the live CD wouldn't boot, would this be more likely to work or should I just try the 32 bit edition? Specifically, it started loading X but KDE never started loading and my cursor just stayed the X and the background was the grey/dotted thing. Probably not the best place for a support question, but whatever.
- mirzmaster, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5Is there a release notes page anywhere?
- JasonHaley, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5While I use gnome-look myself, the guy's a newbie and I think he just wants a quick fix.
So the quickest way to change ubuntu's look is this way:
Black Theme: Type "sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-theme" in your terminal.
Blue Theme: Type "sudo apt-get install blubuntu-look" in your terminal. - Jholder112233, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5What..?
- Stemp, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5ahem uh… http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/8.04.1/re ... … ahem ahem
- Portachking, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5Everyone recommends Gnome-look.org, and while that is very good, you should also see Customize.org. It has some very lovely looking themes.
- arfandualo, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5working on it right now, and it is like hot butter on hot butter, just plain awesomeness, its the perfect OS....
- HonoredMule, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5KDE fixes almost everything that is horrible and wrong with Gnome...then introduces a whole slew of new, completely unrelated problems. Some magical meld of the two could be totally awesome (or utterly worthless).
- silfiriel, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5Ok, so how do we know if upgraded to 8.04.1 from updates?
anyone? (I asked once in a comment, but just to be sure)
And if we're not running 8.04.1 how do we upgrade? - pendrachken, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Was there a kernel update? If so APT may not have grabbed the new restricted modules. You should be able to open whatever package manager you use and search for the restricted module package for the latest installed kernel.
- Lyk4n, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4I prefer AWN myself..
- jman82s, on 07/05/2008, -1/+5Schweet. Hardy really wasn't quite ready for release back in April. Does anyone know if flashplayer still causes Firefox to crash? (I'm still running Gutsy)
- sniperpants, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4I installed Ubuntu 8.04 for the first time two weeks ago, I have never looked back at windows xp. Ubuntu is everything I need in an OS, I'm glad I made the switch.
- pip182, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Yes there is some goofiness with flash and firefox in 64 bit for me. Crashes are random and rare. 32 bit ubuntu seems to be much more flash friendly.
64 bit Opera doesn't seem to have that problem for me. - Rowan187, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4on the terminal type -> lsb_release -a
- silfiriel, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Ok, so how do we know if upgraded to 8.04.1 from updates?
anyone? -
