- stoanhart, on 12/08/2007, -6/+9Neat, but no Aero. Also, it seems really laggy when he's switching between windows; clearly his RAM is filled to the brim and its swapping like crazy.
My girlfriend's laptop has 512MB RAM, and an Intel graphics card that shares some of it; on a fresh reboot into 7.10 with Compiz, she still has well over half of her RAM free.
Still cool to see Vista running relatively well on the Eee- XGC75, on 12/08/2007, -4/+4I see no lag...
- MikeOSX, on 12/08/2007, -5/+2Vista?
- stoanhart, on 12/08/2007, -0/+8See 1:40 in the video. The presenter is running only Vista with "System" and "Computer" open - no non-OS apps. Switching from one to the other is very slow; rendering the new window happens one bit at a time which would indicate it is swapping from the flash memory, because the RAM is full.
I'm very impressed the Vista runs this well on the Eee. It shows that Vista really scales a lot better than most people would have you believe.
However, the video also show that Vista is pushing the Eee to the limit, without Aero enabled. Meanwhile, the Eee can handle the latest Ubuntu with Compiz enabled, and it still has some RAM to spare. I'm not bashing Vista here, just pointing out what I saw. I don't know why that gets me dugg down...- Fergy, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I wonder when stoanhart will figure out that the video is Ubuntu with Compiz instead of Vista. Running Vista without lag with Aero takes at least 800MB of ram and a DX9 128MB video card.
- xfitzyx, on 12/09/2007, -0/+0There was a video of Vista in this thread stoanhart replied to.
- xutopia, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1There is definitely lag on this video of Vista running on it. 3 seconds to bring up my computer even though it was already in memory.
- stoanhart, on 12/08/2007, -6/+9Neat, but no Aero. Also, it seems really laggy when he's switching between windows; clearly his RAM is filled to the brim and its swapping like crazy.

- zzzpoohzzz, on 12/08/2007, -0/+10isn't it just because the screen is so small? with such a small screen you don't need that many pixels to look good...
i wish i could get my hands on one of these suckers so bad!- stoanhart, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6Yeah, you're right. Resolution (in terms of clarity) is a DPI thing. So yeah, this has less D (dots), but also less I (inches), so the overall DPI on such a small screen is relatively high even though the number of pixels is low. Of course, you lose screen real estate.

- mtekk, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2Yeah, there is this program called Terminal Service Client, which does VNC and RDP, it's just as fast as MS's RDP in Windows XP and runs on most Unix-like environments.
- Myztry, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1It's pre-installed. Just type

I use it to admin a headless Windows Small Business Server all the time.
- euvirtual, on 12/08/2007, -0/+8Yes. Ubuntu does support it. You can even run only the program you want, instead of the whole desktop: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SeamlessVirtuali ...

- potyl, on 12/08/2007, -0/+9You can "remote desktop" to windows from linux. If you all you want is to connect remotely to windows computers you might as well run linux on it, chances are that you EEE PC will boot faster with linux and use less ram.

- wisam, on 12/08/2007, -13/+2Fairly impressive. Although I really doubt it's the 256 MB RAM version. Ubuntu 7.10 (or any recent OS for that matter) would suck on 256 MBs of memory.
- dezman2003, on 12/08/2007, -0/+4What 256MB version?
- justinjstark, on 12/08/2007, -0/+11He states in the comments it is the 512 MB edition.
- odnomzagi, on 12/08/2007, -1/+0that's right, the machine in this video contains 512MB of memory
- andycr512, on 12/08/2007, -0/+7A family member's PC only has 256MB, and came with XP SP2. I installed Ubuntu 7.04, and it was perfectly fine - only used about half of it at idle.
- bruenig, on 12/08/2007, -6/+2Only bloated distros like ubuntu/suse/fedora which are essentially identical would have initial problems on 256. Arch, gentoo, slackware and others are perfectly fine.
- theWrkncacnter, on 12/08/2007, -2/+4you waste far more time configuring those then you would lose to "bloat" on ubuntu
- bruenig, on 12/08/2007, -4/+2Um first off, the two aren't comparable. I am not saying you lose time because of bloat, but that bloat causes you to not be able to run it on low end machines. Secondly, I guarantee you that you waste more time on ubuntu than on arch. Configure once for an hour and you are completely set for the life of the computer, whereas you have to ***** with updating every six months and the awesome breakage that causes. There are faster boot times, and faster response times with applications. So not only is it cleaner, it is faster and is more portable. Stop being silly.
- theWrkncacnter, on 12/08/2007, -2/+4you waste far more time configuring those then you would lose to "bloat" on ubuntu
- Ademan, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1I successfully installed ubuntu and ran the livecd on a computer with just 384mb of ram, and the best part was, once ubuntu was installed, it FLEW, it was really fast, and I was really impressed. That said I've installed xubuntu on a box with 96mb ram, (couldn't use the liveCD), that never ran GREAT, but it did run well enough to be usable (300mhz processor in this one, iirc the other one had a processor close to 700mhz or maybe even 1ghz)
- pendrachken, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1debian Lenny runs great on my laptop even after i scavenged most of the ram ( 384 megs ram and 2GHZ sempron mobile cpu )
- warden1337, on 12/08/2007, -1/+5ya english would be nice but the video at the end shows just how awesome compiz on this humble little machine. Can't wait to get mine. This puppy will be a perfect little bu rig.

- mroarsome, on 12/09/2007, -3/+2In looks maybe! When I can assign an application to a specific space (easily) like in OS X Leopard it would beat it in practicality too. But like all things in *nix, it's only a matter of time before some one does it.
- cawpin, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1You can already do that with Compiz and have been able to for some time.
- uberlaff, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1You've been able to do that since way before Compiz. Compiz just makes it look pretty...
- mroarsome, on 12/09/2007, -3/+2In looks maybe! When I can assign an application to a specific space (easily) like in OS X Leopard it would beat it in practicality too. But like all things in *nix, it's only a matter of time before some one does it.
- thewump, on 12/08/2007, -2/+10Surely Xubuntu (XFCE) would be a much better choice for this hardware?
- LittleDas, on 12/08/2007, -0/+15This isn't necessarily the best choice for the hardware
but it is ***** awesome - EdwardsNH, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I was thinking linux mint xfce.
- Sawta, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1As with most linux distro's, I think that the choice really comes down to the intended use. Xubuntu would be nice if you planned on needing a lot of the space that the ASUS comes with (Which isn't much) for a lot of important things. However, if you are planning on getting one for the same reason that I *want* one, it would just be used to surf the internet, check mail, and perhaps play a built in game or two (And of course, explain to curious on lookers, how such a tiny machine can run a full OS), then I don't see what would be wrong with a little "flair" ;)
- budser, on 02/04/2008, -0/+1Actually, I just installed xubuntu on my 4G (701) and I spent all day trying to get advanced desktop settings to work (to no avail). I can't seem to get my usb bluetooth up and running either and there's even less help available for that.
- LittleDas, on 12/08/2007, -0/+15This isn't necessarily the best choice for the hardware
- macditty, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1i love fusion, but for some reason divx and other video playback was AWFUL and very pixilated, anyone experience this problem? maybe you could offer some advice or a fix. i had to disable compiz and would love to run it again.
- pendrachken, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2have you tried the video playback plugin in CCCP? had the same problem with vid playback untill i noticed that plugin.
- Artemis3, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1This is a known problem with the Intel video xorg driver. Basically a bug you can't avoid or save yourself from. The i810 driver is not getting much attention anymore but the new intel driver has even more issues which makes it a pain (kills your app if you try video playback, etc). I usually just always leave compiz off to watch videos or use wine. Don't feel bad, try E17 (eg: geubuntu) and you might not even care.
- rootneg2, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1you can try re-compiling mplayer with the appropriate flags for you processor.
I have a laptop with a i915 and this made a tremendous difference; before divx (and mp4) were unwatchably laggy now i can even do some multitasking without dropping frames.
- ExxonValdeez, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1I wonder if the wireless works because from what I heard the Atheros driver that Asus shipped had some alterations to it. Seeing Compiz run is fairly amazing though. I love what you can do with such comparatively underpowered machines with Linux. Personally, I would run Arch so as to avoid the extra weight of a full distro like Ubuntu.
- odnomzagi, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Wireless doesn't work out-of-the-box. You must use ndiswrapper and the Windows driver's files (.sys, .inf).
- crapatastic, on 12/08/2007, -0/+30I have an eeepc. A couple of cool things:
The good:
- Running Ubuntu "Server install" with XFCE, GIMP and OOffice, etc. installed "on top". Native installation takes up around 1.0 GB. (Lots of "apt-get clean")
- I use it as my desktop at work. Have a Sceptre 20" hooked up to the vga port, running at 1280x960.
- Compiz on the native laptop LCD is as fast as my desktop. Smooth as silk too. On the external monitor I have some slow down, but not enough to ruin the experience.
- (my favorite): I have changed the BIOS image using a tool designed by the bios manufacturer. (Right now I have a musume mecha girl as my bios screen, although other have used tux, etc.)
- I have said to hell with the warranty and upped the memory to 1GB, but I could go up to 2 GB
The bad:
- Had to upgrade the bios to the latest to get the full FSB clock speed and processing power. (This would be fine except according to other users, this update has some issues on it's own)
- You get used to the small resolution, but some apps behave funky.. nothing horrible, just have to be creative sometimes..
All in all a great laptop. I build asterisk systems, and having a 2 pound diagnostic machine i can hold in one hand and watch console messages while testing with the other is great. Not to mention i have wireshark, nmap etc. and a micro hub for all my network sniffing needs.
Just my .02- ExxonValdeez, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1Does wireless work? That would be a deal breaker for me if it didn't.
- crapatastic, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6Yes! Originally it required ndiswrapper.. (bleh) but the madwifi guys recently released a patch for their linux drivers. (tested yesterday, works great) I imagine by the next Ubuntu release or in the 7.10 updates they will push this out as a standard module.
Check these forums out for some user experiences
http://forum.eeeuser.com/
BTW it comes with xandros (Debian) and the repos from debian can be added. So if you don't feel like messing with a new install, but still want a linux laptop, than the stock desktop is good as well. I preferred xfce for the environment, as well as the disk space. (Well more the first one, as Xandros default install on it only takes up 700 MB)- ExxonValdeez, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2That's pretty awesome. I will definitely look into getting one whenever I have the money. :)

- flamingmb, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Di you get any battery life loss when you up'ed the fsb and processing power? I heard its actually underclocked at 650mhz but can go to 900mhz.

"Being ugly as hell" is a feature by the way. They wanted it to look like a child's toy, so it wouldn't be stolen from the kids and used by grown-ups.
But it sure would have been a great idea of them to make a second model with identical hardware, but less childish case. It would have helped them sell the thing in developed countries.

- alexra, on 12/08/2007, -3/+1that must take up half your memory right, doesnt it take at least 4 gigs to install ubuntu , so if you have 8 you have 4 gigs or less
- LingNoi, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I can't tell you, but it has to be less then 4 gigs, I know that.

It sounds like a good machine and ubuntu much better. - tybris, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Damn I want one, but the high prices in Europe are keeping me back.
- zongamin, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1its £200....
- lagoveride, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1I got my Black Asus Eee. voided the warranty and upped the ram to 1gb stick for 20bean caps. I have since enabled full desktop mode so i can switch between the two. There are some sliming add on's for firefox and other things you can do to slim down the size of the Gui to make the most of the 7inch screens real estate. I was thinking of installing xp just for itunes, but i am quite happy with linux. Although there is a learning curve for command line when your doing some things if your a windows only person. I might switch to another linux distribution later, but i have been hearing of driver issues with wifi and such. The Eee pc is a quick little laptop. I popped in a 4gb sdhc card today and it works super fast as a media drive for movies/games/music/photo's...The webcam is cool as well. This laptop is so much fun. The keyboard takes osme getting used too and i just ordered a usb mouse cause i just hate the touch pad for extended use. My advice to anyone considering this is buy it while you can its almost sold out everywhere.
- potifar, on 12/08/2007, -5/+3I'd definetely run Opera instead of Firefox on that thing.
- securitybreach, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Is there anyway we could get an english translation? I should have my EEEpc within days and would love to try this. I tried translating it using online tools but the translation are not coming out right.
Thanks - jacksdig, on 12/09/2007, -1/+0would like english to get better response, but quite interested in ubuntu!
- abox, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6I have a pretty ancient Dell laptop that runs 7.10 with Compiz surprisingly well. The Cube effect has a bit of FPS loss, but overall Compiz takes up a lot less of the system resources than it looks like it should. I love Ubuntu :)
- Nimroy, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5You can really see how useful is compiz on such small laptop.
Hope those people that think compiz is nothing more then eye candy get the point. - oomfoofoo, on 12/09/2007, -6/+1Yet another ubuntu compiz video. buried.
- djGentoo, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I ran Compiz 0.5 on a Dell laptop with an 800MHz Celeron and 320MB RAM (800MB swap). It barely made any difference. Compizis amazing...

- Koski, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Way cool.
- nkthen, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1It's really cool. Wow...
