- superyounan1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16i think 'it' moved
- spikeb, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18horray! they could have had this with the very first release if they'd have used system-config-display from redhat/fedora instead of getting NIH syndrome
- zomgfast, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12zomg the whole computer!
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13I'd just like to see the ability to configure screen savers without having to install a different xscreensaver. I know this is mainly an issue with gnome, but for crying out loud windows 3.1 had this feature.
- Bakagamer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Believe it or not, some printers aren't plug-and-play.
- borninda818, on 10/10/2007, -1/+107.10 will have compiz fusion built in.
- cnowacek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I'm sorry, but if you 'mess up linux' your computer will never be 'fried'.At worst, you'll have to reinstall your OS (assuming your not running Ubuntu in a VM).
- tony134340, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Frying your computer? I think your brain is still in alpha.
- youareretarded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Finally, now we are getting somewhere.
Noobs rejoice! - anjinash, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9You're aware that you can change the themes, right?
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I think that this is the release that Feisty was supposed to be.
But this should be a great release with the new graphical xorg config tools, compiz fuison built in, etc. Should be really good. - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Have you looked at commercial software? There is a _lot_ more duplication there than in the F/OSS world.
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The automatic printing service is a nice touch. Saves another (albeit small) step in post-install configuration.
- ohstoopid1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Umm, change the fugliness if you dont like it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7*****, I accidentally dugg you up.
- justinjacobs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You do know that you can change the themes, icons, and fonts in Ubuntu, or for that matter, any Linux desktop. Right? I'm sure with some Google searching, you can find the Bluecurve theme used in Fedora. A good place to start looking is gnome-look.org.
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Actually, the late alphas in an upcoming Ubuntu release tend to be very stable, but of course you should always expect some breakage with alpha releases.
- youareretarded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It should have happened years ago but it didn't and it's something that should still be added to any modern OS, now it is and that's a good thing.
Better late than never right? - cmost, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Um, Ubuntu 7.04 was brown and fugly....as was every previous version of Ubuntu going back to its inaugural release. Whatever you did to change that in 7.04 you can simply do in 7.10. Alternately, you can install the "Blubuntu" package to get something prettier quickly.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6That's fault of your hardware's manufacturer (Broadcom most likely). They really need to step up and get their drivers out there so people can use their stuff.
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I reviewed your comment and I chose to digg it down.
:-) - armo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Very glad to see this tool, no more editing xorg.conf :). Tried setting up my projector with it last night, didn't want to work though. Still, early days.
- plizard, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6i wish i could get ubuntu to look like fedora..... better color scheme and smaller font by default
- tony134340, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8I concur, orange and brown? wtf? That's like the two ugliest colors there are.
- joebaloney, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well yeah... in windows 3.1 a screen saver was simply an executable. It was awesome to set msword.exe as someones screensaver.
- bieber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Apparently someone hasn't noticed HOME MOVIE MAKER/DVD BURNER APPLICATION NUMBER 31 on the shelves lately...
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5No, a (hopefully) _improved_ screen configuration panel with other goodies for easy X config. And nobody claims it is revolutionary, these are just the noteworthy feature additions to this latest fifth alpha pre-release of the next version of Ubuntu. Take your failed sarcasm somewhere else.
- k3nt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'm pumped about the X configuration tool. nvidia-settings is decent, but I don't always trust the xorg.conf files it will generate.
Every new release sees the addition of tools that keep intimidated users away from the command line. This has done and is doing wonders for the adoption of Ubuntu and Linux. Keep up the good work, Ubuntu! - ronniemiller, on 05/03/2009, -0/+4This is excellent! I could have used this last night when I installed Ubuntu. It took me a few hours to figure out how to allow the system to use a resolution higher than 1024x768 -___-
- sctwp09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Change the colors?
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yes, but not by default I think.
- reldruh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Check out this link: http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS6755691725.html. It's an old article but this version of Ubuntu is the first to have the kernel that the new wireless stack is included in. I believe drivers have to be rewritten to take advantage of the new stack and I'm not sure how far along that process is but there's at least a chance that wireless will start getting much better as more and more wireless cards start taking advantage of this.
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You should have /home as a separate partition. You make a tar.bz2 of your entire OS partition. Store that in /home. Screw up your Linux. Boot with live CD. Delete all files in OS partition and restore from tar.bz2. Done. Max time, 20 minutes, depending on size of data and I/O speed of your computer. If /home is a different disk, not just partition, it is much faster.
- NoTiG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3isn't there a totem-gstreamer option for mpeg plugin for firefox ?
- Piedramente, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Awesome. I look forward to the beta release.
- cyberwiz01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You make a good counter point, so I dugg your comment.
- forteller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sorry, but Digg did not notice me about the other submission when I submitted this. I was only told about stories about the other Tribe-releases.
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If the manufacturer doesn't make any drivers then it is their fault. No two ways of looking at it.
- blueorder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3[Ubuntu Noob]
So, is this release like Edgy where you upgraded only if you wanted the bleeding edge stuff or is this release more like Feisty. - dragonopolis, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Not using any operating system because it looks ugly is a stupid reason not to try it. Window Vista and XP both can be changed as well as Linux distros. Heck, even OSX has options to change the way it looks.
Thankfully, Linux solutions are usually free and numerous. - Piedramente, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3dugg for Seinfeld :D
- blubloblu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm really impressed by Ubuntu telling me that my Dell battery was part of a batch recalled by Dell and I may be at risk! Also the plugin manager lets you install Gnash, the Open-source flash player. compiz fusion rocks
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hell yes. nvidia-conf never lets me do my dual monitors right and I have broken X a few times trying to edit xorg manually.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It's not like Windows can do that.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4This one is like the Add/Remove programs thing: you can browse available extensions and install them. The curren extension manager in FF only lets you manage what you already have installed.
- anjinash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If you don't have the ability to discern which partition to install to, you're likely not the type who should (or would) be tampering with Linux.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, I thought Feisty was what Edgy should have been.
- Jorophose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Like Feisty, not really like Dapper. Getting closer to the next LTS release, so expect Gutsy to have a bit more polish than Feisty.
- buggu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's not sarcasm, it's the truth. I'm using Feisty, and Ubuntu/Linux really does have a long way to go in this regard. This wouldn't be a problem so much if the distro makers colloborating on making a uniform set of tools that manage generic computer tasks (like setting the resolution) because these GUIS and programs already exist in other distros - it's amazing that it's only now that Ubuntu is including it. Yet again the FOSS movement suffers from duplication of code and fragmentation of effort.
- Jorophose, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Come on KDE4 in Gutsy! =D
