- Spr0k3t, on 10/24/2007, -3/+80It's decent... but I REALLY like the lion, giraffe, elephant, & blue elephant created by Damianvila. Blue elephant is my current background (NOT wallpaper). I'd love to see more of these organic types as they lend well to the perception of Ubuntu. The default just reminds me of a quote from Ratchet and Clank series: "Kill All Squishies!" (love that game)
- geminitojanus, on 10/24/2007, -2/+52The "Animal" series is quite possibly one of the most beautiful desktop wallpapers I've seen in quite a long time (probably "ever"). I'd love to see them expanded upon (maybe a set of 12? just a well-rounded shipping set) and one of them picked as the default. I think OS X killed the "gentle curves" wallpaper idea, this textured series with its beautifully embossed logo almost feels "real", like you could touch your monitor and feel the texture.
I'm not sure how it would look against the new Clearlooks-Gummy (or a Humanized-Gummy), but I think they're gorgeous on their own and they've already earned the coveted wallpaper position on my desktop.
edit: I think a lot of African plains imagery would be really nice, like a "Grass", and maybe a "Zebra" (with dark/light instead of black/white stripes) to go well with what's already there). - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -5/+53Looks like a step back compared to 7.04 (in my humble opinion).
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+44Okay, for the ignorants like me who didn't know anything about the "animal series" before, here are the wallpapers in question: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Animals
And I'll have to agree with you, Spr0k3t, they're definitely more innovative than all those Aqua-ish/Vista-ish wallpapers. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+47Best one IMO:

Digg up/Down depending on what u think - melaren, on 10/24/2007, -1/+38My vote goes for the "animal series" as well. ...I think one of the lion wallpapers would be a great fit. The current selection isn't bad, but it does seem a bit dark/grainy for a default background. I think it is very important, especially for a distro in Ubuntu's position, to choose a really good default wallpaper. ...that one little piece of artwork will be the first thing that a new user sees, and it has a major impact on their first impression. For those of you who are wondering what we're talking about, you can look at the entire discussion on the Ubuntu Forums. Note: you need a (free) login if you want to see any of the pictures. Perhaps if the Ubuntu Forums thread gets enough attention, the boys at the top will allow an artwork change, even though it is past the deadline. ...it has happened before.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=555477 - drlha, on 10/10/2007, -2/+37Looks like a brown version of the Mac OS X Jaguar (yes, 10.2) wallpaper to me. I guess Vista copied that.
- Papers, on 10/24/2007, -1/+36agreed.. love the animal series.. elephant is really nice.. and gives a very natural feel.
- gotamd, on 10/10/2007, -8/+43It looks like someone took a ***** on the default Apple wallpaper.
- nanostream, on 10/24/2007, -9/+40"The goal is to get back to something as unique and beautiful as included in previous versions"
The wallpaper looks like a brown version of the Windows Vista wallpaper, and that is definitely not unique. - SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27Wow. I just took a look at the animal series. Incredible wallpapers and definitely fitting for Ubuntu. Very odd if they are not chosen instead of this bland retro wallpaper.
- idd7, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24I like it, but it's too dark.
- Shootfast, on 10/24/2007, -1/+19The Animal prints are excellent, and far better than the rage of bright lights + long exposure look that everyone is going for.
- cornflakepirate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17TERRIBLE. The animal ones are a million times better.
That wallpaper is so amazingly uncreative and drab. Looks like an even ***** version of the Dapper default wallpaper. - ludwik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17WOW, the "Animal textures" from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/GutsyIdea ... are simply amazing. Especially the Lion and Elephant ones.
- killerofkiller, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18i like this one better:
http://www.fedoraforum.org/gallery/file_4gallery/1 ... - OS2Guy, on 10/10/2007, -13/+26Looks like you stole it from Apple and changed the color to cover up the theft. Try getting a little more original.
- gerbalblaste, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I agree with the above. The proposed wallpaper is a rehashing of the gentle curves. Its far to generic and seems like a ripoff of osx or simply shows an absence of creativity.
The Animal series is amazing. Take one of the lions with the ubuntu logo in the middle. These wallpapers are simple and amazingly different from anything else out there. The kubuntu folks can have the elephant one (i happen to like human), which is also amazing. - Po0py, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Boring swooshy patterns. How original.
- d3k4y, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I like the animal series too. I actually liked the elephant.
- EspressoNinja, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I suddenly want coffee.
- ReallyOswald, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Yeah, that isn't exactly the best choice for wallpaper. Its a good design, but if you are selecting this as your "Default Wallpaper," then it might be time to hit the old drawing board again.
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10See the excellent wallpapers proposed here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/GutsyIdea ...
They don't need better designers, they just need to make some better choices at the top :-) - floguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Agreed, link here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Animals
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Maybe, though, they're too stunning and ground-breaking for Gutsy and would better fit Hardy which I think will have a major artwork update?
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/GutsyIdea ...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7My thoughts exactly. It looks so dapper drake: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ubuntu606-Defau ...
But its not a bad wallpaper at all. - SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Ubuntu's committed to tear down the "any colour you like as long as its blue" way of doing artwork. You should take a look at the animal wallpapers which show how beautiful brown shades can be used in a wallpaper: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/GutsyIdea ...
- rumbleroast, on 10/16/2007, -4/+10The default theme should be called "dirt". Its ugly no matter which way you spin it. The best thing to do is go to http://www.gnome-look.org/ and get something decent. The Blubuntu theme is nice.
- Sahtor, on 10/20/2007, -0/+6elephant looks great
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8looks like mac wallpaper turned brown, cant they get away from the same old brown? or at least give it a nice design
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I thought the same thing.
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+5I'd have to agree with this guy:
"I agree with the people suggesting one of the Animal themes... I love the elephant and giraffe, but if everybody wants the lion then go with it, without the logo. It would be really cool if you could do a Gibbon fur texture for Gutsy Gibbon. That could set up a pretty cool series, where Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron" would have a brown texture of heron feathers. But for now, the current animal themes are great too." --Added by PeterCruickshank Sunday 23 September - Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5WOW! I didn't know brown could look so good, a lot of those are actually pretty appealing. My first step after installing ubuntu has ALWAYS been to change the theme to clearlooks and get a new wallpaper, maybe i won't have to next time (or this time if they pull their heads out of their asses)
Mind you i'm still no fan of brown, and i'd probably choose a more appealing green, like foresight, but some of those brown ones are quite nice, and make brown more than palletable (which is more than i can say for the past backgrounds, and even the human gtk theme) - mkantor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5+1 for the animals (elephant is my personal favorite).
- tmahmood, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Looks good
Animal series looks awesome. Include the whole collection in the CD - springo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I don't like it at all, it's way too dark. Actually I'm keen on all the brown thing, I'd rather get some blue/green, but I guess it's the choice Ubuntu has made, and we have to respect it.
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Better at least.
- sandkiller, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Too simple and too dark.
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I always change it right after install, but first impressions are important for new users.
- 1310nm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Too dark, it needs to be bright and inviting, think of the target audience who will boot up to this from Windows and think, "This sure is drab." How about a collection of high-resolution natural snapshots, or photoshopped nature shots? The ones that come with Vista are excellent (too bad the OS isn't).
- Senn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Why does the link to the full resolution image go to a file called "warty-final-ubuntu.png"?
In any case I'm not that keen on it, two people I've introduced to Ubuntu were put off by the default wallpaper of Feisty, and being even more brown won't do it any favours... - adarkmethod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3looks like *****. Love Ubuntu, but man, if they could et the elegant looks that Mint has it would be so much nicer to use. They need something that looks a little less like *****, and a lot more inviting.
- ShootTheCore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The blue elephant is even better...
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Welcome to Humanity 1.0
It's been like that since the dawn of time. - nailer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Blue elephant is my current background (NOT wallpaper). "
What's the difference? - Onestone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I like the new one much more than the ugly pink in Edgy and Feisty.
The "animal" series is good too. - Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Too little nudity, dammit!!
SuSE "get it" ;-)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/df ...
And Ubuntu used to too, once upon a time:
http://robitaille.wordpress.com/2007/04/14/the-nak ... (I haven't time to see where there are the high res versions of these online, but maybe you can just install the repositories as shown in the blog, if you're actually interested in these) - mozillamonks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/GutsyIdea ... is the best :)
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Pretty crappy reason not to switch considering it's trivial to switch to a different theme, and tracking down another decent wallpaper is fairly trivial as well. But agreed, brown sucks.
