- canthraxp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28If you are in ubuntu, run:
update-manager -d & - bratterscain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21Also Kubuntu is being updated to 7.10 beta for the KDE users: http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/kubuntu/7.10/
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I'm eager for Gutsy Gibbon, but I think I'm going to wait the extra month just to make sure that everything is fixed and finalized.
- gerbalblaste, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Go apt-get go!

Getting about 400kB/s right now. :D - socomoddjob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Ive been running Gutsy for over a month now......rock solid.
- Coldkill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17I've been waiting for you to post. It's becoming like "Where's Waldo?". I hope you know nobody likes you.
- Nodren, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17because the more people who torrent instead of straight download, the stronger the torrent gets, and the faster everyone downloads
- Nodren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16ubuntu is on a 6 month release cycle, they never recommend installing the alpha or beta versions(what this is) their versioning is based on when its released. for instance this version is going to be released 10/07, the last version(7.04) was released 04/07.
you can upgrade your ubuntu instillation easily using this command(hold alt, hit f2 and paste):
update-manager -d &
for the updates to work properly, its not recommended to add custom repositories to your instillation.
also, most of their versions have a 18 month support cycle, so even though a new version is out, with a easy upgrade path, they will still offer support and security fixes to the older versions... some versions bear the mark of LTS(long term support) such as 6.06, and 7.10 will have it as well... that gives the release a 3 year support period, as opposed to 18 months.
so to answer your question, no we dont enjoy formatting, and typically when i install ubuntu i go for the latest release, if another release is coming out soon, i'll upgrade once its out, not having to reformat or reconfigure my os. - RonnieW, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17one package that you simply have to install is "Compiz configuration settings manager" it's so you can setup all the cool little animations. I really dont see why they're not installing that by default.
- ThrobbingBrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15There have been very few updates the last few days (I don't think there were any yesterday at all). This is all in preparation for the beta release. As long as you're fully up-to-date, you have the beta.
- armo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14whereas with the regular download, the more people downloading the slower it gets. So, if you can, torrent that way the strain is taken off the download servers for those that can't.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Nice we are almost there
- spacebar14, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Upgrading is pure choice. IF you want to upgrade, you can either reformat - or goto Update Manager, and click Upgrade Now - and watch everything happen automagically. There is no need to reinstall.
- kernco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14It's a human distribution.
- MWeather, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Apparently 3 syllables is too complicated.
- pltnz64, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12it's free and comes as a Live CD. just try it out
- Durinthal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12What's wrong with "Ubuntu 7.10"?
- bmc152006, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12sweet, can now write to ntfs
- bratterscain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11In other words, it's a world project as is most Linux projects.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11As for ext2, ext3, reiser, you've been a bit buggered though, no?
- whatsgoodike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12There's a little line that says: "Reply to Webjunkie's comment" ... Find it.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Mark Shuttleworth is actually South African. He did fly with the Russian cosmonauts, but only as a guest. He paid a *****-ton of money to be a "space tourist."
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Just the alphas.
- sishgupta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Been able to for a long while now. NTFS-3g was in the repos for feisty and all you had to do was install it and add "-3g" to "ntfs" in your fstab.
- sparrowkc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11"And for no apparent reason."
"Just because it's beta doesnt mean you can slack off and let things slide."
Gmail has corrupted your understanding of what a beta is. - trenchfever, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10alphas. It was tribe untill now.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12ooohh Ubuntu!
Seriously though, I run Ubuntu and love it dearly. I'm really excited about the new release. - Megatog615, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10So is Kubuntu 7.10 going to have KDE4(beta)?
- bzaks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9And most importantly, not everyone wants to have that stuff on their computer.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I'll seed until comcast decides to ***** me over!
- Justizzle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10What needs to be fixed/simplified? I right-click on the icon in the taskbar, connect to my wireless network, and we're good to go...
What problems are you having? - craigyjack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The next release, 8.04, will be LTS. This release, 7.10, is not LTS. Just to correct your statement. Everything else is good.
- Youssif, on 10/10/2007, -10/+18Ubuntu ... Oh ! yeah !!
- maninalift, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I think he means "gutsy gibbon". I like it though, it's very open-source, not like "vista" or "aero" which is trying too hard to be modern and cool and just ends up sounding naff.
- richardiscool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Mark Shuttleworth is South African. He wasn't a "Russian cosmonaut", he was one of the first space tourists, and the first South African in space (I think).
Canonical is based in the UK, with their main offices in London, but officially it's based in the Isle of Man (tax haven). - sparrowkc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I can now select the correct resolution for my monitor. There is a god.
- Bizarrkley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Ok, here's a serious question. I'm a Linux noob and hear a lot of good things about Ubuntu. I have an older laptop (3+ years) that is currently running WinXP. Would it be feasible to dump XP off this laptop and put Ubuntu on it just to play with and get familiar with? I guess what I'm asking is "what are the hardware requirements" and will this old dog do new tricks?
- kiroh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Any wallpaper who's main colour is not some shade of brown would do nicely!
- mcmlxxii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"you can't set yourself a static IP using a WPA network"
You might not be able to but I can, using wicd instead of network-manager. Let's not spread too much misinformation. - mcmlxxii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6there is an option to unlock on login
- armo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6or install ntfs-config and tick a couple of boxes
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11W00T!!
- mcmlxxii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6many wireless cards are supported out of the box using wpa - I've been using gutsy for over a month on a desktop and notebook - and both work fine with wpa. Easy enough to check using a live cd :)
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6you can install them via synaptic, msstcorefonts package I believe
- jarvolt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6My last experience with Ubuntu was a couple years ago. I liked it, but there were way too many hardware issues for me to handle (tried it on a Dell, so...) I'll test this one out, see how it goes.
- MrHighTech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You're kidding right ? You are comparing three clicks with having a user dealing with fwcutter without any form of GUI supporting the whole process in an automated way ? and you wonder what the problem is?
Ubuntu aims to make it "just work". That is what what Windows users have been telling the Linux community for years. With Windows it just works.
This is a great step forward for usability. Fwcutter, wpa-supplicant etc. are for the linux elite. "handling of non-free device drivers" is for the masses. I welcome that wholeheartedly. - bobonthecob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5msttcorefonts
- MrDarkSim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I had this same problem and I found this at the help site: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshoo ...
Configuring default soundcards / stopping soundcards from switching
Note: This section assumes that you have installed each soundcard properly.
*
In a shell, type cat /proc/asound/modules
*
This will give the the name and index of each soundcard you have currently. Make a note of the names, and decide which one you want to be the default card.
*
Now type sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
*
At the very end of the file, add the following (assuming you have 3 cards with module names A, B and C and you want to have them in the order CAB)
options snd-C index=0
options snd-A index=1
options snd-B index=2 -
