- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -7/+73How is it that these guys can roll out versions so quick but Microsoft, a company of 80,000 people, takes like 6 years?
- finite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+60I had a dream last night. I dreamt I was a dove flying over the sea. And then I dove into the ocean... And I swam with the dolphins. I was two animals joined as one... ...which meant - good things are coming. Good things.

Because 99.999% of the code in the distribution is not their own, they're just re-packaging the work of other people (probably more than 80,000 of them). Also, Ubuntu releases comparitively small incremental changes where-as Microsoft has to produce a platform which will *compell* people to upgrade. ;) - underdog138, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34I'll personally give an entire dollar to any one organization that can cater to every single person in the world population without pissing a single one of them off.
"You can't please everyone." - zugu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Don't like Ubuntu? That's fine with me. Don't like the weird codenames? That's fine with me. Don't like the Ubuntu-Debian "conflicts"? Fine with me too.
Because I use and like Ubuntu and I don't really give a ***** about what other people don't like. I'm not a hard fan of Linux. But Ubuntu was just the distribution I needed. I still see it as the best Windows replacement to date. Not that polished, filled with bugs, but yeah, it's slowly getting there.
Don't you people just love apt-get? - zcat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33WTF? You mean like having a simple "add/remove programs" button on the main menu that let you install or remove any of about 10,000 programs just by clicking a checkbox.
Yes, that would be awesome. They should definately add that! - finite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32F/OSS FTW
- tomee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Not that there's anything wrong with that...
- NICU, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25The next Kubuntu release should be the "Kourageous Kitten"

From you, Dante.
Oh... that's right! What's up, Mr. finite!"
Ah, and on a serious note, I only want ONE THING FROM LINUX: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=31128
Until ANY Linux desktop enviroment can support such a theme, penguin will be very sad. I mean, come on, it's open-source and has thousands of able participants, and yet we cannot come together to create such an amazing visual style for Linux. - ReallyDave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22It seems the "Fawn" part of it isn't being well-received by Brazilian Ubuntu users.

That has GOT to be the cheeziest, lamest description EVAR.
"OMG! It's like fluffy little clouds!" - bluenova, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Ditto, that would have really pissed off the portuguese.
- underdog138, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I, for one, choose to ignore the cheesy tagline and appreciate them for producing a very impressive product for the "I just want the ***** to work, and I love it" demographic they align themselves to market to.
- DuoPros, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20It means fag in brazilian. So, in effect; Ubuntu - 'Feisty Fag".
- Jaymo89, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Errrr... Synaptic? Apt-get? dpkg? There are plenty of installers you can use.
- wedderburn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17well a new gnome too 2.16
init as you mentioned
some nice features in synaptic
popularity ratings on apps in add/remove
so yes its a incremental update its nice but its not a large change like dapper was with the xorg 7, letting us use xgl/compiz and the intire new icon look. - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Well, look at it this way: you lost the Brazilian demographic, but now you've got "special interests" supporting your OS!
- jlebrech, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17>> I wish that all linux programs came with installers...

Synaptic,
Automatix,
apt,
tar,
emerge,
rpm.
./configure;make;make install;make clean; - dekki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14You think Wise or InstallShield are not pre-packaged installers?
They can not magically install programs if your throw random dll, exe and data files at them, they need packages just as much as Synaptic and so on.
The largest difference is that do to the nature of the propitiatory world, every program has to have its own copy of the installer. Because they are sold and distributed individually every program includes its own setup application.
In the open source world, applications can be distributed from the same source, the distribution you chose. Because of this there is no need to have an installer per program but instead an installer per operative system.
So Synaptic or InstallShield it is the same thing and almost the same amount of work for the developers. Just that one of them has to be included for every program you create and the other, one installation per OS. - n0xie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I think someone has homophobic issues...
- sbutcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10what kind of mouse doesn't get detected by ubuntu?
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14You know your fedora is pink, don't you?
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It does now include a .deb installer, and providing the program is packaged in that format (most are), it's trivial to install a program on ubuntu.
- bbnkstr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11http://www.getautomatix.com (automatix) or http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org (easyubuntu) actually, i think its easier to install realplayer for ubuntu through command line or these progs than for windows imho
- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I say they ditch the "Feisty Fawn" and go with "Flatulent Fruitbat". That will dovetail nicely into "Gassy Groundhog".
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7""Flatulent Fruitbat", "Gassy Groundhog"."
You're not a Songbird dev by any chance are you? - Khaine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't care what they call it, as long as it still works as well, and builds upon the awesome foundation that it currently is.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9dude its ok..... you can come out of the closet.... saying the word ubuntu is gay is like saying the country malawi is gay.... me thinks you have spent too many times watching movies with sensitive men. give it up... you will be happier for it!
watchout for the next release Ubuntu "Gaymans GoingtoGetyou " - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10GIANT GOATSE!!!
- goblindegook, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Well, not really. The correct translation of "fawn" would be "enho", it's "deer" that would translate as "veado", which doubles as the infamous Brazilian slang term for homosexual.
- NTolerance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@soogy
That theme is sweet. The best part is that it's compact so it maximizes screen real estate. I wish GUI designers would be more mindful of those of us with better-than-geriatric vision and would at least give us options to make controls/widgets/toolbars smaller. - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Why are these developer's discussions still on E-Mail lists? "
1. email is a distributed system - having everything on a single forum = single point of failure
2. you can read email offline.
3. not every developer has a broadband connection at all times.
4. no need for user account management/passwords - less overhead
5. you can write emails offline, sending them later when you have a net connection. - dcherryholmes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8sudo apt-get install realplay
Yes, if keystrokes blow your mind you could do that in any number of GUI's, but it's the easiest way to explain it in a forum post. - nixr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Although multimedia support isn't all that hard to add to Ubuntu it will be nice have it natively. If they can expand upon what's already available then all the better. This distro really gets the desktop market more than any other distro I think.
On a related note I am perplexed by some of the more rabid Linux haters that post here. I can understand if you don't like Linux and I'll even go so far as to agree with some of the more reasonable criticisms concerning compatibility etc, but why the need to tear it down. You do realize that the goal of Linux, in this case Ubuntu, is to provide a totally usable platform that is free of charge and free from restrictive commercial EULAs right? Why on earth would anyone root against that concept? Instead of tearing it down, how about supporting it so we have more options on the OS front. Imagine a world where you don't have to be a pirate to have a free and fully functional OS. - chaos386, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Darn, I was hoping they'd go for my idea of calling 7.04 "Frisky Finfoot."
- dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5maybe... a broken one.
Seriously though, if you have a lick of sense, an undetected mouse can rectified fairly quickly - dramatools, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Phocion55: Portage > Apt.
More accurately, Portage != Apt. Gentoo, save for the minimal system needed for bootstrap, builds itself from source. That gives the user a lot of customibility at the expense of install speed and ease.
Most other distros use precompiled packages which are simpler to install, but are built for a wide variety of processor variants that may not necessarily be ideal for a particular machine. Perhaps we can plot this on a wider axis:
Linux from Scratch ---- Gentoo ---- Slackware ---- Fedora, Ubuntu, et al. - chaos386, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames
And yes, they're going in alphabetical order now. - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+66.04 - Gay Duck
7.04 - Feisty Fag - dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Agreed, arguing with the customer isn't smart. Unfortunately the above "customer" is uninformed and ignorant. Like the posters said, it's in fact easier to install it in Ubuntu then windows. The guy is just use to doing it the "windows way".
- farley2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2""Ubuntu's Feisty release will put the spotlight on multimedia enablement

Look at the other comments here and in other threads about Linux. It is what Ubuntu needs if it is going to become mainstream.
Users like eye candy. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WTH? I wasn't agreeing with the top-level comment, I was agreeing with a subcomment that is no longer there... Odd...
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@szembek: From the console, type:

Your Windows share gets mounted to /mnt/whatever_folder - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Nah, it's not as if an average brazilian would hear "Feisty Fawn" and laugh or frown.
First it gotta be translate to portuguese, and then the person might think the name a bit funny, but nothing shocking.
I think this is too much of a stretch, and anyway, who cares... - jeanmaxime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Ubuntu's Feisty release will put the spotlight on multimedia enablement

n00bst3r: maybe you should look here: www.ubuntuguide.org on how to add repositories and how to use synaptic.. - megaloid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Wait till "Alliterative Aardvark" comes out.
- davy2002a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My Recommendation to Ubuntu: I think it's time we look beyond just special effects and write up applications that help new users to linux out on how things work and how to accomplish things, possibly a Tour program very similar to the ones that came packaged with Windows. Oh! and an easy-to-understand first-time setup wizard for the first time the system boots that people can understand :)
- jivatmanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2An earlier user made the comment that linux distros that are popular may change. I say, so what. With open source code, everyone benefits from advancements that are made. the newer distro will incorporate things that were good about the previous distro.
