Maybe they'll just grab SUSE, put the Microsoft logo on it, and call it a day. Some technology is just too good to be ignored, or be FUDed endlessly (which is expensive). Just following the E-mails...

- pllb, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33I've been using Linux since 1999 and it has always worked for me.
- evilregis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Wake me when your average Windows user can admin a Windows box intuitively. If they could, you wouldn't need Geek Squad or any other variation thereof. It's why people like Geek Squad, Nerds on Site et al can charge customers $150+ to perform a "system cleanup".
My parents run Ubuntu. They don't require Geek Squad or Nerds on Site to come clean up their system. - pllb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24I'm pretty sure it already is the most popular Linux distro. /me throws on flame retardant jacket
- evilregis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I beg to differ. If you go and install Ubuntu on their machine and make sure everything is working... it's PERFECT for mom & dad or grandma & grandpa. They want to be able to send emails or IMs to their kids/grandkids, browse the web, listen to music and other basic tasks. Linux excels here, IMO. I had an old PII 450 that I gave to my parents. I put Ubuntu on it for them (Eft), brought it home, set up their printer and that's it. They run the updates when they get them, no problems. It runs VERY well on the dated hardware.
On the other hand, a lady at work has been bugging me for two weeks straight about problems with Vista. She is not a fan.
As always, YMMV. But I love putting Ubuntu on someone's computer when they have very basic requirements. - evilrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17@SolarWind24
The 7.04 is their versioning system, which refers to the year (7, for 2007) and the month (04, which refers to April) Much like how 6.10 came out in October of 2006, 7.04 is the April 2007 release. there will also be a 7.10 this year (Guess when?) - bllambert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I was planning to torrent the iso, and do a clean install, it might be faster.
- motters, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Standing by to download. This could be one of the most popular linux distros yet.
- dystopianray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16The Ubuntu 7.04 release will have the latest nv driver for nvidia cards which supports 8800 cards.
- Leffe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Wake *ME* up when a Linux user can administrate a Windows box intuitively.
- pllb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I'm already feeling sorry for the servers...

I totally agree. Ubuntu is completely ready for the emailing, word processing, web browsing crowd. Screw Windows. Ubuntu is cheaper, faster, higher, better,... - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@malcam
Why would they use Linux when they can use BSD and not have to return code. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@brendanc
What absolute bollocks. There are only two real considerations for a Linux driver. Is it kernel based or X11 based. X11 tends to have stable API's to develop for, all drivers in the kernel should be OSS anyway so API stability isn't important.
Also for the person who asked why we don't do something. We are. There are efforts underway to reverse engineer Nvidia drivers and there are plenty of efforts on the ATI front. We are more interested in Nvidia though since few of us run ATI cards. - pllb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Don't blame Linux, blame the hardware vendors.
- shinda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9But if ATI doesn't want to help then you can't blame linux programmers for not making hacking and reverse engineering the video cards so they run flawlessly a top priority. But this will get better as the market share increases.
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I've been using Feisty on my personal laptop and my work computer for about a week now. Pretty stable though there's lots of updates all the time, but that's expected. Ubuntu is one of the first distro that comes damn near 100% working out of the box. Of course, it's still not ready for your mom and your grandpa (i think), but it's a really good step forward.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@pllb
It is the most popular desktop linux.
it still has a long way to go to out seat debian and redhat on the server side. - pllb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Some aspects such as gdm, wallpaper, and bootsplash have been updated afaik. I believe Metacity and gtk2 themes have remained unchanged though I may be wrong. Either way, all this can be easily changed. The most important features are under the hood sort of speak.
- heffae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ubuntu is good be basic computer people ie. grandma. And obviously Enthusiasts.
The problem is for people who kind of know what they are doing in windows.
If you know what the most of the things in the control panel in windows do but don't want to lean a new OS then linux is not for you. If you weren't even aware that the control panel in windows existed then Ubuntu might fit you just fine.
On a side not I just upgrade my windows install to Vista (still not going to replace Ubuntu for getting real work done) and if you are familiar with Windows XP then Vista is going to be just as frustrating as moving to Ubuntu. Microsoft once again moved everything around so figuring out once again how to do basic admin tasks is just as hard as figuring them out in Ubuntu.
I'm not bashing Vista I actually do like it better than XP (I know thats heresy.) I'm just saying relearning this new version of Windows isn't much different than learning Ubuntu for the first time. - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@GMason
Because returning code to a community can be beneficial when there are non-competing members of that community. Even giving code to a competitor like Red Hat is beneficial when the task at hand is to grow the Linux market. Anyway, Red Hat and Canonical have such different business models and pricing structures that they are not yet direct competitors.
Look at the fact that Red Hat thinks CentOS is a Good Thing.
Screwing every last penny out of customers for a closed product is not the only way to make money. In fact it is pretty certain not to work when Microsoft dominates that business model. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7hey, people at canonical! how about pre-releasing 7.04 to international mirrors one day before the public release in order to better distribute the traffic?
- pllb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ubuntu Homepage says otherwise my friend, and it was just updated today....
- ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6According to distrowatch.com, which is very reliable, the project expects the final release to take place later this week as scheduled, although a slight delay is still a possibility. Does anyone have a link to an announcement which supersedes the one I just posted? Don't digg me down just because you don't like news which doesn't make us happy. I want my Ubuntu too!
- JustinJS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Now the question is stick to Debian 4.0 or go back to Ubuntu and try 7.04 its so damn hard.
- pllb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That issue has already been addressed and resolved. And why would they post an announcement _today_ that Feisty is still on time for a Thursday release? That would make no sense.
- jenel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Yay Feisty!
- tpink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"it still has a long way to go to out seat debian and redhat on the server side."
Not sure what you're talking about. With the server install option, you basically have a Debian system with more current packages (may not be entirely true anymore since etch is newer than 6.06). Ubuntu 6.06 server is supported for five years (through 2011). - DynaWerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wake me up before you go go.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist. The door was wide open... - tdskate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Will it have an updated user interface?
If so, i'm down. - ElCazador, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Troll. One way ticket to Blocksville.
- jamelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have noticed it runs much smoother than 6.10
- heffae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I believe the version after this one is going to include beryl/compiz in the install. So that one should a much improved interface. No that I don't like the current one.
- almighty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why write an article about the release now? I mean seriously why is this here? I love Ubuntu as much as the next guy but, all of these worthless stories are starting to bug me.
I personally will be grabbing the torrent in the hopes that everyone else will be doing the same. - pllb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well I don't see much _important_ life threatening news happening in the Linux world today, so why not =)
- pllb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3New debian releases are always appealing to me since I have been a long time debian user up until about a year ago when I switched over to Ubuntu. It's all up to the end user really. Etch has new software now but in a few months it will likely be outdated. Even now though etch only has gnome 2.14. Perhaps there is a backport for 2.18 though? Either way, for me debian is the only option for servers whereas ubuntu works for my desktop.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The interface will still be GNOME though there is a new control panelesque config option. Compiz is just a WM so doesn't really dictate interface policy as such.
- pllb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Fullcircle Magazine issue #0 has just been released and goes into depth about what's new in Feisty fawn read it here: http://files.fullcirclemagazine.org/uploads/issue0.pdf
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think 7.04 will come hot off the production line. There won't be much of a period between the last patch and release. You could probably install one of the later pre-releases and it will update to the full version normally.
- cdmarcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@bllambert: I'm actually going to do the same thing. I need a clean install anyway... I've broken so many things it's ridiculous.
