- Stirk, on 10/11/2007, -14/+102What I'm wondering is how they can compile a list of the best products of 2007 when the year is not even half over.
- hfranco, on 10/11/2007, -19/+75This does not take me by surprise. Ubuntu is a great Linux OS.
- Yogurth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+50That is the way PC World award works ... from june to june every year, so technically it is full 12 months, just not full 2007 year.
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -8/+50Should be, "100 best products of the second half of 2006 and first half of 2007 award"
- TwilightXaos, on 10/11/2007, -3/+44I don't, you insensitive clod
- satzio, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33Every time I log onto Digg, it's like being slapped in the face with a ham sandwich full of Ubuntu.
Ugh, the constant stream of Ubuntu word-of-mouth advertising has finally worked on me. Fine! I'll try it. - chicken101, on 10/11/2007, -7/+35Congrats guys. You deserve it!
- xconverge, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28I for 1 made the switch to Ubuntu as my primary os and love everything about it. Yea, its a great os.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31Finally some recognition to one of the greatest Linux distros around. Congrats to the teams.
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26While ubuntu is 'n00b' friendly it still has all the same functionality and power use that any long time linux user wants.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24Who doesn't have a PC World Award?
- aarongough, on 10/11/2007, -14/+31Why would vista be on the list? it hasn't introduced anything new or exciting... it's just NEW bloatware.
I think the list is valid - xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+191. the 8800 drivers have been available for a while now in the ubuntu repositories, try using 'nvidia-settings' to set your monitors resolution.
2. if there are no native linux drivers ry using ndiswrapper which lets you use windows drivers in linux for your wireless card
3. if you need to modify files that require root user access, try using 'sudo' before you cp, mv, rm, if you want to do it via nautilus, you can install a root nautilus script so you can right click, go to scripts and root nautilus here, go here (http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Nautilus_Scripts) on how to add them and how to use them. The other option is run 'gksudo nautilus --no-desktop' from terminal to get a nautilus with super user privileges.
4. To add a second ntfs mount go here for instructions (http://www.ubuntugeek.com/widows-ntfs-partitions-readwrite-support-made-easy-in-ubuntu-feisty.html)
5. Grub eats the ***** windows boot loader, but if you really want to replace grub, you need to boot off your XP disc go into the recovery console and run FIXMBR and then follow the instructions here to add linux to your boot.ini (http://www.tprthai.net/bootmgr.htm)
PS I am not responsible if you make your windows and linux unusable, however if you ***** up you can always re-install grub from a linux live disc....and if you ***** up your boot.ini, you can from a live disc install ntfs-3g, mount your windows drive, and then edit your boot.ini file - JoshuaH, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17@donwilson2
Ubuntu 7.04 Wins "A" 100 Best Products of 2007 Award - SteveCUBE, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22Vista not being on the list is a travesty?
The more you know. - crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -10/+24Finally some recognition? Have you been living under a rock for the past couple of years?
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14oh its ready for prime time, the problem is windows users expect ubuntu to act and work like windows, sorry it does not work that way.
- ashwin100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I don't understand how they can rate such a broad range of products in one Top 100 list. I mean how can you even compare a website (#58 Digg.com) with a digital camera (#64 Fujifilm FinePix F40fd)?
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13@Schpariel
please do not recommend envy to a 'n00b' without telling them when you use the nvidia installer, after a kernel upgrade, you need to re-run envy, or re-install the driver using the nvidia installer script. Other wise after a kernel update/upgrade they are gonna scream and post on ubuntu forums, that linux sucks, and they do not have a gui, they just have 'dos', then they will try to fix the problem the windows way which involves reformatting and re-installing ubuntu. - Fartag, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15I think you're mistaken there, this isn't a top 5 limited-software-pushed-by-an-anticompetitive-monopoly award!
- bullox, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16"Now you all"
Way to tar everyone with the same brush. - Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10JasonCox actually makes a good point. I did my share of Ubuntu bashing when it began its rise to fame. Now I use it on a bunch of my home systems. Side picked!
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Again I ask why is Apples Mac OSX Tiger on that list? It came out in 2005, I love Mac OSX 10.4, but it came out two years ago........
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -15/+25ubuntu is awesome
- bytefoo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11"I am also on of the devs, for Ubuntu Satanic Edition,"
You made some oh-so-scary wallpapers, that hardly qualifies you as a dev, let alone a separate edition. - dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Eh? Ubuntu is much of a "product" as any other service on the list (Like the Google Apps thing, or FiOS) or bit of software (Paralells or OS X) - any "other GNU/Linux distributions and FOSS" could have made the list if it was as well promoted [as Ubuntu] and widely used by the sorts of people who would read the list/PC World's site (I.e not server owners or Linux fanatics - just "normal" computer users..)
- BriscoCounty, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I have been using ubuntu as my primary OS for over a year now, and I don't see myself ever going back to windows. Windows users like to say that they use windows because everything just works. Well I have used every version of windows since 3.1 and I can safely say there only half right. Everything in windows just works half ass. Which is enough to function, but not enough to stop irritating me. It has been my experience with linux, which has only spanned a few years and distros, that most things actually do just work, some things just won't, and a few can be made to work half ass if you are prepared to tinker. As a person who spends a great deal of time on my computer every day I enjoy being able to take care of all my daily business without my OS irritating the crap out of me, and as computer enthusiast I enjoy having an OS that is much more open to my inclinations to tinker.
- xconverge, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12those all sound like personal problems to me...
- macewan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9@stirk, maybe Fiscal year
- strabes, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Yahoo mail beta beat firefox 2, gmail, youtube, and guitar hero. Who made this list? Do people actually use yahoo mail?
- jm9206755, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8A win for Ubuntu is a win for GNU/Linux in general. Power users with a lot of experience using the OS often don't like Ubuntu because it tries to make it easy on a new user and can obfuscate more advanced functionality. In that regard Ubuntu IS for newbies. That doesn't mean they don't like Ubuntu it just doesn't fit their workflow like straight debian, slackware, gentoo, etc.
- xiojqwnko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7use ntfs-3g for ntfs write support. Its in the repos.
- brisk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8digg > itunes :D
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7When an orange reaches the point that it is as good bananas I would definitely consider using it ...
Live CD FTW - streak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6...
- chrisc262, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6it works with my intel card (3945abg) in a toshiba laptop
- xconverge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Amen to that. Not only is it very noob friendly, "main stream", but I can spend lots of time changing things and stuff if I am bored.
- xiojqwnko, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I prefer kubuntu, but ubuntu is great, yes!
- JoshuaH, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7@piesforyou
And that would be because this article is on Ubuntu's news page... - ozsynergy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Yeah its a great OS... providing you dont own a ATI powered laptop!
- jm9206755, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5How do you figure?
- Schpariel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9"I could find drivers for my Nvidia 8600 video card. I'm stuck in 1024x768."
Try Envy: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html - javaroast, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6@mikecampbell
Instead of posting the shut up an quit using Ubuntu, digg, whatever posts like you've already done twice in this post alone. Why don't you just shut up and quit telling others how they should use digg. If you have something constructive to post please do so. Otherwise take your own advice and just shut up. - tehkain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6So did Canonical get you on trademark violation yet? Don't they reserve Ubuntu * Edition(any other use is fine) for their own use? I think it is right at the start of the trademark documents. I think they are doing it because by using edition you seem to be an official Canonical Ubuntu distro - rather then a derived version.
- Tweakedenigma, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Why are people digging down ThrobbingBrain? He is being honest in his views and doing as many of us Linux guys suggest and thats use the best tool for the job.
Also I am an Ubuntu user on all 4 of my systems including my Laptop I prefer it and find it to be a better option but to each his own, Isn't that the idea? - abhiroop, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7What rock do you live under? Its the most popular web-based e-mail service (250m users, compared to hotmail's 228m, and gmails paltry 50m!)
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Heh, from the site:
"If you're an ex-Windows user, it might make you feel better to reboot not only once, but several times, during the process described above. If you came from Windows 9x, then you might want to reboot once or twice daily after you're done. You're right that you don't need to, but it would make them feel more at home."
l-o-l - EM62sl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5For which Card? The Intel PW2200 b/g in my laptop worked by default in 6.06.
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5lol that I agree with that but would you mind telling me what else we would call our selves? We do have a live disc that we are currently testing to make sure the 'kinks' are out, as well as gnome, and beryl themes. Relax the project is a joke and its for fun......
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8I hope thats sarcasm considering, I run ubuntu as my primary operating system on two of my machines, my secondary OS on my HTPC (if nvidia let me use DD LIVE in linux, it would be my primary OS). I am also on of the devs, for Ubuntu Satanic Edition, so yeah, I love ubuntu, but really this is old and its a duplicate.
Its an operating system not a religion. There is no reason to digg duplicate and old stories. -
