- iggee85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20cool, aiglx will be default and they'll include an easy codec installation.
- diggaro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16The U.S. Military should get their mission codenames from these guys.
"Operation Feisty Fawn" - Canute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@urbanight23: Actually dapper is 6.06, it got delayed two months ;)
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13yess!!
easy-codec-installation -- Approved
This is GREAT news because codec installation was the most often cited drawback of a default Ubuntu setup. Also, composite-by-default! - kmonihen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12http://www.ubuntu.com/support/faq#head-554a5bc453f68051a6b83c83fbfe61b322c6b3fd
"What is the numbering system of the releases about?
- The version number comes from the year and month of the release, it really is that simple." - pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Ubuntu has a six month release schedule. It coincides with Gnome releases, I believe.
- samanathon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Very interesting! I love that the people can contribute - long live open source!!
- gnome21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm just praying for "Goofy Gopher" as the next release.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The list is not complete or final yet. Lots of stuff will be added in the near future, specs approved, rejected, deferred etc etc.
- MBHoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8http://www.duggmirror.com - Unlikely, but just in case. :)
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm glad Ubuntu uses 6.04 or 6.06 etc. instead of just 6.4 and 6.6 (Gnome comes to mind ....). I'm using Gnome 2.16 and it's newer than Gnome 2.2 that I use on the campus computing clusters (and I thought wow our campus clusters are so up to date).
- n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4as much as i love Ubuntu, i have to laff at naming the latest "feisty fawn".
- urbanight23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4not really, the numbers of the release mean the date of release (year.month). For dapper, it was 6.04 (april 2006), and Edgy was 6.10 (october 2006).
- psilanthropist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@reldruh:
its not only with kubuntu. its only with amarok. thats why its so bloody brilliant. amarok already has had the easy-codec installation that is going to be implemented [k][x][ed]ubuntu-wide from now on. - dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6not weird at all.. that how they name their releases.. the first number stands for the year, the second (after the dot) for the month
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They only move release dates for LTS releases that come every 18 months in order to ensure stability. Essentially the dev cycle seems to be breaking down into.
1. LTS release (Dapper)
2. Resync with important projects (GNOME) for next release.
3. Release (Edgy)
4. Cram in as much new technology as possible.
5. Release (Feisty)
6. Stabilise for next LTS release
7. LTS release (?)
This isn't any official program btw, just the way it seems to be going. This is still OSS so I imagine the middle details can change quite a bit with only the LTS parts being roughly stable. - arkitect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It really is incredible the strides that ubuntu has made in only the eight months I have been using it. When I started using it, alot of things I almost take for granted were not included. It is really coming into it's own as an OS. I have already had one friend switch over and most of my house. The only computer that doesn't run some niche Windows only software that has nothing comparable so that one is kind of stuck. But overall, Ubuntu is almost to the point where it can be reasonably competitive with Windows. I like most of the software on Ubuntu more than I like the alternative on Windows. OO beats ms office, and gaim beats everything else.
- reldruh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been using Kubuntu for a few months now and this is already well on its way in edgy. Maybe it's just for Kubuntu but if I try to play an mp3 in amarok it asks me if I want to install the codec then takes care of it. Same thing with flash in Konqueror.
- smartssa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's too bad launchpad does redirects to https and the original link is an http... duggmirror is kindly showing the redirect message, and launchpad is taking a beating :(
- nwoolls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@moture: "stop waiting for things to be done for you!"
Isn't that sort of the point of computers? - inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good can't wait :)

http://tophomemortgageloan.com - psilanthropist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn It !!! Launchpad seems to have gone down.
- YourDoom123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's examine the windows method of installing programs....
1. Search for program that does needed task on google, etc. using firefox, ie, opera, or the equivalent.
2. Download the program
3. Attempt to install...
4. Oops, forgot to get those dependencies that the site mentioned but I forgot.
5. Download dependencies.
6. Install dependencies
7. Install program (clicking through an installation wizard with around [my estimate] 7 pages, in the process choosing directories, etc.)
8. Use program.
Time estimate: 5-30 minutes depending on the program...
Oh, and that doesn't take into account security...
Ubuntu:
1. search for task in synaptic
2. pick a program, by right clicking and selecting install
3. 1-2 repeat for any other programs that you may want
4. install program
5. use.
Time estimate: Longest I've ever spent is around 10 minutes (eclipse)...
and that DOES take into account security...
which is easier again? - Craga89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its great to see that the community is getting involved with the new release. I'm an ubuntu fan boy myself and just skimming through the approved features its already making me druel, especially Composite-by-default! Long live Feisty Fawn! :D
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6lol i like Retarded Rooster lol oh man how can u digg that down lol
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1one click installs? no. a unified software package scheme? no. no more having to sudo apt (whatever the ***** that means) just to install a piece of software? no.
oh well. itmt, this non-1337 nerd will stick to windows. - MBHoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wouldn't want all that crap. The need for a terminal makes things more secure, especially sudo usage. It doesn't take a genius to figure out apt/synaptic/GDebi, seriously stop waiting for things to be done for you!
And, with GDebi it's a two click install.
1. Click the .deb file
2. Click install. - sataniKrodent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You forgot to mention the amount of thought and budget-planning-time one has to invest to decide if s/he wants to purchase a particular software (when the software is non-free, which is in most of the cases), starting with "winzip"
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Damn, nothing really interesting.
Useful and important, but not interesting. Still dugg. - gnome21, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3For version "F" I was hoping for "Flatulent Frog", it's not every day you can work "Flatulent" in when naming software. Ahh well.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -17/+8How about "Anal Aardvark"?
Or "Retarded Rooster"? - shuffle2, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1another ubuntu post buried.
- KarmikTrance, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3Ubuntu 7.04 is coming out in 4-07? Pretty weird.
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2FOOL!!!!

What is Digg?
